  • hi,i got a 20 meter wire aerial, only cost 20 euro,so when i go to the coast to do some dx ing, maybe i can contact more stations,i was so curious i had to do a quick test,a little like a kid with a new toy....big plus point so easy to set up,not so much QRM,but an external antenna tuner is needed if you want to use all the bands,so it seems. This was a very quick set up and test,,,,,,,,NOT TO BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY.... next Sunday by the sea i will be able to test it more thoroughly.thanks 73 from Rotterdam.

Your local 11m repeater is undoubtedly using a vertically polarized antenna, which is what the Gainmaster is, also. The new wire, on the other hand, is horizontally polarized, wgich accounts for the difference in received signal strength. Sky wave signals tend to scrambled polarization when reflected via the ionesphere. Your two antennas will be on an equal basis with them, allowing a more fair comparison of the two.

Hi,thanks for your comments regarding the antenna, but since then I've learnt much more about the Hobby, and there is a lot to learn, thanks from Rotterdam 73s.

I bougth a Sigma 360 and the Balun melted using FT8 at 80 watts. Three months of use and it had to go in the bin. Never had a voice CQ on it.

From the instruction leaflet "The power rating is for intermittent amateur (400W CW or 500W SSB) use and not for AM broadcast or constant carrier data modes. For AM broadcast a much higher power BALUN is required." "

An antenna of this nature, requires installation up in “free space”. Ideally the long wire should ideally supported between two supports. Antenna’s such as these, will allow themselves to be bent around (without sharp angles) to allow installation in a smaller garden for example. From what I can see in the video, the wire is wrapped around a chimney pot, and possibly one or two other points as well. In wet weather the antenna is very likely to under perform , more so than it does now. Good luck with the course, 73’s Geoff (G4SQJ).

Hello, I do understand, but I just wanted to do a quick test, I have also taken the wire to the beach, (see video),but was not so impressed, when I get my Amateur license, I can try all the bands, but hopefully this weekend I am at the coast and I will try the wire antenna again, thanks from Rotterdam 73

@@Bernard-John Ok Ben, all understood. Just a few pointers. The way an antenna works (or doesn’t work), even as a test, will need a basic, but sound installation to stand a chance of good results, hence, even if temporarily installed. I understand there was limited information on this antenna, as I believe it was obtained second hand on a selling site. Hopefully, Ben the Radio Amateurs Course, will provide you with all the tools and knowledge required to run a successful station. Pity you weren’t local, as I’m sure I could have helped to get that antenna up and running with good results. Once again, the very best of luck with your Radio Amateurs course, and maybe one day soon I’ll be able to work you on the h.f. bands, who knows, using the long wire antenna. 73’s Ben de G4SQJ. (Geoff).

@@Bernard-John No worries Ben, a tri-bander for 10, 15 and 20m, that will give you some good gain on those bands. Try and get that antenna as high as is possible. 73’s. Geoff (G4SQJ).

the zig zag wire does not work well it must be horizontal or sloper and the wire straight and clear and the coaxial must be at least 15m because it acts as a conterpoise

It is an Amateur Band antenna and you are testing it out of band(s). No wonder it showed high SWR.

I am afraid that your antenna setup is far from being adequate. Too many loops and turns and twists. Mine works perfectly as an inverted "L" with limited use of an external ATU.
