So much easier to use and store withou liquid. I air dry the bar soap (zote/fels naptha) then cut into chunks and place in food processor with baking soda and whiz until it's a fine powder. The powder combination dissolves easily in the wash. I made 5 gallons 5 years ago and still have not run out. Love, love, love it.
I do a homemade liquid detergent that uses washing soda, baking soda, castile soap and essential oils (do not have to use) plus water. Makes 2 gals. No grating needed. I agree with you. So much cheaper plus better for us & environment.
Question Kathleen…. I’ve never made any kind of cleaning item homemade, my main reason for looking into. This is my son’s extreme, eczema, and no matter what we use, even though if it says, all free, or clear, seems to still give some sort of discomfort to my son. So I was willing to try this the other thing I’m asking is how well does this dilute? My scrubs for work are black and I’ve been noticing that no matter what brand I buy all It all hammer, game, tied, you name it I always get like a liquid white residue, and I even use an extra rinse cycle so I’m just afraid if this doesn’t dilute all the way and break down and it’s gonna leave a residue? I’d appreciate any response. Thank you.
@sandi kreisberg - I totally get what you are talking about. You only use 1/3 cup. I use cold and warm water, have never really noticed a leftover residue. Hope it works for you

Zote is usually at Walmart. Fels Naptha is sometimes at our other local grocery stores, was constantly in stock before 2020. Zote smells like citronella oil in the pink bar, Fels Naptha used to be used as a bug repellant by the Amish too from what I have read.
I made this recipe back in the beginning of February. I'm just getting ready to make more. I made half of your recipe. Its amazing how great it works. Thank you!!!
very good video!! I too have been doing the same thing with zote soap and borax for years. I prefer to add the borax into the bucket instead the stock pot. And also being very old fashion as I am, have an old baby high chair next to washer for the 5 gallon bucket to sit on. Fill the bucket just over half way adding water. Next day or so, mix up with my hand and add little more water. Works out great, keep a plastic cup in the bucket for scooping. A whole bucket for me cost about $3.00
Hi I just made this recipe yesterday and used the laundry soap today and wow my clothes have never been this soft :) I am definitely going to be making it again thank you so much for sharing your recipe 😊
I like the idea of storing the soap in mason jars. Typically I use empty food grade gallon containers but those contain eventually fail and start leaking. I’ve learned to regularly check for leaking containers but with the jar method my problem should be resolved. Thanks!
Just made this waiting to see how it turns out.. hoping for the best! My daughters had so much fun with grating and touching the zote, mixing, pouring etc... teaching them about using natural products ❤
Thank you so much for sharing your experience on HM natural laundry soap. Very cost effective, clean, with no harmful chemicals. I'm going to try this.
I thought you end up with a concentrate (GElled form) and you pour in half the gel halfway up in the gallon jug, and then thrn gfill the rest with water and cap it and shake it to mix....1/2 cup per load. SHake jug before using. So many versions of this. I found that it was gentler on my clothes, but that it does a great job removing stains (If you have a bad stain, you can brush some of the gel into the stain and let it stand for a few minutes.

I love this recipe, and am making again for the 4th time today. My very 1st batch didn't turn out right, it was still very watery and grainy, I used it anyway because it still worked but left a little residue from the soda I think. The 2nd batch I made, I accidentally boiled over the igredients but was able to stir it down. The boiling is the magic that turns it into a gel like laundry soap, it's perfect. Just thought I would add a tip.
I made a batch, I do like it, but it doesn't cut grease as well as I like it too, so I added 5oz. of sodium hydroxide mixed with 12oz. of water to the batch after it cooled down.

I use the same ingredients you do, except I make powdered detergent (no water) and, as someone else said, I grind 2 bars of Zote in my food processor with some borax to keep it from sticking together. Also add a cup or so of oxy-clean and/or Biz for good stain removal. I just mix it up and keep it in a pail. I timed it once and it takes less than 15 minutes to make 6 months worth.
Hello and Happy New year. Thank you so much for sharing this recipe. I was wonder how to make my own detergent free from chemicals, but you were the only person who shows the final result and how to break it. Thank you so much!!!!
Can you leave the detergent in the 5 gallon buckets or do you have to put it in jars . Also how much water did you put in the 5 gallon bucket to start off with before you added the solution in the bucket.
Thank you for this. Our washer is on the fritz till i can save the money to replace the parts so I am looking at even handwashing my son & I clothes in the tub and wanted to look up how to make some soap from scratch to save money. Would you say the white zote bar is better for sensitivity issues? If we use too many scents, even just that little too much, we itch, so I thought I would ask. Thank you.❤😊
How thick does it get after you put in Mason jars? Can I put it into a big tide bottle that has the spout or is it too thick? It has the cap side as well, just thinking of storage places for me!
@@Mandy_39 I don't put into mason jars so I can't answer that really. I make it in and store it in a 5-gallon bucket. I stir it up for a few seconds every time I need to take a dip with a measuring cup and pour into washing machine. It's not too thick.

I have a few questions. Does this get separated and thick/gel like again in the jars like it did in the bucket originally? Have to shake etc? Also, I have a top loader with a pull out drawer for liquid. Do I put it in there or pour directly into the fry clothes? OR, should I wait til the water is added before putting detergent in? The HE washers use little water. Thanks. Hope that all made sense.
Hi! Thank you so much for easy to follow recipe. The only thing is that my towels don’t really smell clean? Do you have any suggestions? I tried to add more liquid soap but still didn’t help.
What does the laundry booster do? Is it necessary? I am allergic to something in standard laundry detergents (the "free and clear" ones are hypoallergenic but expensive), so I'm looking for a minimalist alternative.
Hello, hope you are doing well. I have two questions. 1) would this detergent lather and make foam like regular detergents? 2) I saw a video from a lady who used to made this detergent too. She said that she is not doing that anymore because her towels became water resistance. The water was not penetrating the fabric of her clothes and towels as well. She said the clothes starting looking dirty . She said Bar soaps works when you make friction between them with your hands or on the washing board. She said that that friction doesn't not occur in the washing machine. As a result, over time the bar soap it will create a layer like a wax on top of your clothes trapping the dirt. Then you will have to striped your clothes to remove that. It is similar like when you use downy, it will create a layer. Also, her washing machine broke because the bar soap started to build up inside the hose of the washer and the repair warranty did not cover the machine because she did not use a normal regular detergent . Honestly, I don't know what to do. 🤷🏻♀️ Thanks anyways .
Enough hot water to dissolve ingredients Pour in laundry soup bar (shaved down) Stir till dissolved Add 1/4 Cup Borax 1/2 Cup baking soda 1/2 Cup baking soda laundry booster Stir till dissolved Mixture should thicken Let cool/gel (preferably overnight) Break up/mix till smooth Store in container of choice Use 1/2 cup for full/large loads 1 cup for extra dirty loads.
While your mixture is thickening, you start filling a 5 gallon bucket with water. How much water are you putting in there before you add your soap mixture?? Thanks!
Thank you for sharing. I have a question. Can use 1 Cup of Baking Soda, 1 Cup of Laundry booster, 1/2 Cup of Borax and 2 Zote Bars to make concetrated and that way I use only 1/4 of detergent per load or 1/2 per load? Thank you so much.
That might work. I would be interested in the consistency. Definitely let me know if you try it! Maybe you would be the one to make little zote detergent pods! 😀

Hmm, I guess I can only tell you about my experience with the soap. I’ve never had any problems with wax build up on clothes or with my washer. All my towels are still absorbent and I’m not seeing any issues with our clothing. The only problem I’ve had with the soap is that it won’t take out a fire or smoke smell. So if you’re at a bonfire or burning trash, the soap won’t help take out the smell. Other than that I’ve had no problems. I hope this helps. 😊
@@Angela_1106 you could always pour some white vinegar into the washer. I use it in my washer mostly to help clean. I know that it also does help soften towels.

How many quarts is the stockpot you’re using in the video? I have a 16 qt. It looks like your pot may be slightly bigger(?). If so, do you recommend that I should double the ingredients? Also, when you transferred the detergent mixture into the hot water inside the bucket-was that mainly the detergent that filled all the way almost to the top? Or did you top it off with water near the brim? My detergent mixture only reached the half way mark of my 5 gallon bucket. I topped it with water until it was near the brim.

@@farelljohnson8264 those measurements are a bit high. It doesn’t require so much soap. This recipe doesn’t lather like normal laundry detergent. You don’t want to have a waxy build up in your clothes, washer, and your lines.
Be careful as the borax has D rating with Ewg. I bought Molly suds with peppermint as it has an A rating and is super concentrated . I find most people use more than twice as much detergent as needed. Was using Dr Bronners castile soap but noticed it was leaving a layer of scum on my skin and laundry since my water is a bit hard. Im so happy will Molly’s suds.

Hello, I love this and I'm excited to try this recipe I just wanted to ask: did you use the zote for the fragrance? I was hoping to make something fragrance free if you have any suggestions.
My only question is the temperature of the water added to the bucket. Is it hot, warm, room temp, or cold? Does it make a difference on temp?! I tried a different recipe that called for hot water specifically but it just turned into foam ontop of water. I hope this one will work better!!!
I've made this, but with a slightely different recipe. (not as strong as what you have here). but it still gels. My question is: "after you mix it up, what stops it from Re- gelling ?

I have a few questions. Does this get separated and thick/gel like again in the jars like it did in the bucket originally? Have to shake etc? Also, I have a top loader with a pull out drawer for liquid. Do I put it in there or pour directly into the fry clothes? OR, should I wait til the water is added before putting detergent in? The HE washers use little water. Thanks. Hope that all made sense.
Yes, it does separate and I shake well before use. I put directly on clothes. 😊
Have you ever added scent booster and if so did it thin out your detergent
Great, will try it. Do you must store it in glass bottles?
Hi! Thank you so much for easy to follow recipe. The only thing is that my towels don’t really smell clean? Do you have any suggestions? I tried to add more liquid soap but still didn’t help.
Does your soap separate from the water later on after it sits?
What does the laundry booster do? Is it necessary? I am allergic to something in standard laundry detergents (the "free and clear" ones are hypoallergenic but expensive), so I'm looking for a minimalist alternative.
Thank you, simple and straight forward
Could this soap be used for hand, body or bath soap?
Hello, hope you are doing well.
I have two questions.
1) would this detergent lather and make foam like regular detergents?
2) I saw a video from a lady who used to made this detergent too.
She said that she is not doing that anymore because her
towels became water resistance. The
water was not penetrating the fabric of her clothes and towels as well. She said the clothes starting looking dirty .
She said Bar soaps works when you
make friction between them with your
hands or on the washing board.
She said that that friction doesn't not
occur in the washing machine. As a result, over time the bar soap it will create a layer like a wax on top of your clothes trapping the dirt. Then you will have to striped your
clothes to remove that. It is similar like when you use downy, it will create a layer.
Also, her washing machine broke because the bar
soap started to build up inside the hose of the washer and the repair warranty did not cover the machine because she did not
use a normal regular detergent .
Honestly, I don't know what to do.
🤷🏻♀️ Thanks anyways .
Enough hot water to dissolve ingredients
Pour in laundry soup bar (shaved down)
Stir till dissolved
Add 1/4 Cup Borax
1/2 Cup baking soda
1/2 Cup baking soda laundry booster
Stir till dissolved
Mixture should thicken
Let cool/gel (preferably overnight)
Break up/mix till smooth
Store in container of choice
Use 1/2 cup for full/large loads 1 cup for extra dirty loads.
Insted of using more soup try running the load another cycle.
Just made this tonight!! You made it so easy to follow! 😊 thank you!!! ❤
Zote also comes in a grated form.

Thank you 🙏🏻🙋🏻♀️
@@Angela_1106 you could always pour some white vinegar into the washer. I use it in my washer mostly to help clean. I know that it also does help soften towels.
3rd time making this! I love not having to use toxic detergents for my family! ❤
some people say they add some detergent or some vinegar to take it up a notch
Can i use this soap for an automatic front load washing machine?
Does the bar of soap choice matter ? Are you just selecting something that isnt harsh chemicals ? Would any natural soap work ?
Awesome!
Homemade laundry detergent using those exact same ingredients was the only laundry detergent my boy was not allergic to do when he was a baby.
FYI on that one everyone
Just an FYI the Arm and Hammer giant 230oz jug is $14. It lasts me and my family of 4 for 6mths. I appreciate this video though and I love your channel! You are a doll and your content is gold ❤️🙏
INGREDIENTS:WATER, C10-16 PARETH OR C12-15 ALCOHOLS ETHOXYLATED, SODIUM LAURETH SULFATE, SODIUM CARBONATE, PENTASODIUM DTPA, FRAGRANCES, SODIUM BICARBONATE (BAKING SODA), SODIUM C10-16 ALKYLBENZENESULFONATE, ACRYLIC ACID HOMOPOLYMER, DISODIUM DISTYRYLBIPHENYL DISULFONATE, SODIUM HYDROXIDE, COLORANTS. CONTAINS FRAGRANCE ALLERGENS.
I checked and the 170oz is $13.99 not the 230oz. Honestly their recommended amount is never enough to get your clothes clean and 170oz would not last me 6 months and I’m single and do laundry once a week.
@@elizabethd3038 Welcome to 2023. Prices are much higher in case you haven't noticed. They don't even sell 230oz anymore. My comment was made almost 2yrs ago. And the 230oz lasted us 6mths with very clean clothes always. Single life and family life have different needs obviously. Take care. 👍🏼

Thankyou very much for sharing and explaining so well. And giving all the details. You give everything from ingredients , instructions and how to use. Thankyou God’s Blessing be with you
When you measure out 3/4 cup per load, is that 3/4 cup for small, 1 1/2 cup per medium, and 2 1/4 cup per large.
Or is it 3/4 cup per machine load
@@farelljohnson8264 those measurements are a bit high. It doesn’t require so much soap. This recipe doesn’t lather like normal laundry detergent. You don’t want to have a waxy build up in your clothes, washer, and your lines.
@@ccats704 yeah since posting that,. we've found out through trial and effort, on what works best for our washes.
Hi. How do you get it out of the jar? Especially when it gets partially empty. Thank you.
I make my own soap bar but other than this step I do almost exactly the same
Is your water (washer) temperature set to a cold setting or hot?
Doesn’t it “re gel” itself inside the jars?
Just made this! Is it normal for it to separate once I jar it? I have more runny liquid on bottom and more of a thicker, almost gel on top? I generally just shake it up and then use it..
interesting thanks.
Why wouln't I just measure up all those ingredients for one laundry load and toss that in, then add the water then my laundry?
Is there any way possible to use alternative products because we don’t have those in Australia. You can get them on AMAZON or EBay but the cost is gob smacking especially delivery. I’m taking $286 plus $190 delivery for just Borax??????
I'd love to know too !!!!
I've been buying tide pods for awhile(at Sam's club). It costs me over $27(with tax) for 108 of them(.26 each before tax). This is WAY cheaper, as there's only 2 of us, but we do a lot of laundry. Thank you
It's not mentioned, but are we to heat the mixture on the stove as we add the Ingredients to dissolve and thicken up? I noticed steam so on low medium heat? Simmer or boil? I really want to try this but want to make sure I'm doing it right.
Do you need to keep in cold storage?
Love it thank you for sharing 😍
I'm making my 2nd batch today.
Hello, I love this and I'm excited to try this recipe I just wanted to ask: did you use the zote for the fragrance? I was hoping to make something fragrance free if you have any suggestions.
I use my own soap that I make. My lard soap works well. Buy any soap that you like and use it.
Is soap necessary? Seems all these items are very good cleaning agents
My only question is the temperature of the water added to the bucket. Is it hot, warm, room temp, or cold? Does it make a difference on temp?! I tried a different recipe that called for hot water specifically but it just turned into foam ontop of water. I hope this one will work better!!!
What does it smell like ?? I would add some essential oils for a nice light scent !!
I've made this, but with a slightely different recipe. (not as strong as what you have here). but it still gels.
My question is: "after you mix it up, what stops it from Re- gelling ?
