- Some updates on my work on Ghouls'n Ghosts ARCADE Stage 2.
I have completed the mid section of the stage, with plently of detailed background elements, sprite and background animation restored.
There are some relevant modifications to the first part of the stage, too.
I have written all the routines for VRAM management, so everything is now working without manual intervention (like it was in the previous video).
Looking forward to your comments and suggestions.

Not only you are coming up with smart workarounds to get the megadrive to display things it never did, but the way you slightly redrew sprites and background elements is beautiful.

The original version for the small cart size was still impressive. This new version is just stunning.shows how close the megadrive could do arcade conversions if cartridge size. Cost wasn't in the factor

Do you also consider changing some game aspects or making maybe few games improvments? For instance the Axe comes to mind as it is very slow and doesn't do much damages, would you consider uping its throwing rate or its damage?
Or maybe include something completly different whatever you decide ?
You need 230 tiles in VRAM for a single enemy? Does this means that you can't stream uncompressed sprites from ROM into VRAM through DMA and save VRAM space this way like devs of Earthworm Jim did?

May be an optional window can be displayed at the top screen for the scores / time? (always visible if 50Hz 240 lines)

One bit that slightly stands out to me is the static top of the waves in your hack which are not present in the arcade.
I think if that top bit was omitted not much would be lost.
Other than that this is looking crazy impressive.

I can spend very little time on the project, unfortunately. Won’t make it in time for Christmas for sure. But I’ll make it my priority to release a demo after I complete stage 2.

Wow, they're not making anything easy for you, are they? I thought the problems with Ghouls 'n Ghosts on the Genesis just stemmed from a small cartridge. I didn't know there were other considerations. Turning Firebrand into Seven Force was a clever workaround.
ROM space is only one part of the problem. VRAM space is just as pressing…

What a puzzle! Optimising the tiles that make up the Red Arremer King is like solving a puzzle, whom adding to the others. Impressive ingenuity.
I really like the return of the turtles' rocking, it's the kind of detail that makes the game world more alive, more believable.
The greater precision of the details on the mills, the addition of colours, at the beginning of the level, a part I thought you wouldn't come back to, is a happy surprise. I appreciate your perseverance. Even if it takes three years, I'm sure the end result will be worth it.
Finally, I repeat, this video format is really great, nice and didactic at the same time. Keep going! :D
Once this project is complete I'm going to create an arcade cabinet dedicated just for this game!

Es increíble ver esos trucos, muy ingenioso, un mimo brutal. Lord Hiryu me pregunto si alguna de estas claves o algo similar en este tipo de soluciones empleadas podrían resolver esa parte del plano background del stage de Zangief, en tu excelente hack de Street Fighter Champion Edition, solo por curiosidad

El avance de el hack era muy rápido y la página oficial no se encuentra.
Algo de todo ésto es muy extraño, no contesta a ningún mensaje y no existe avance alguno. Seguir esperando es lo único que se puede hacer, quién sabe 🤷

Totally amazing! This stage really takes so much effort and they cut the corners heavily decades ago. It is really impressive to see this stage, which was so cheap in its original MD form, converts to something almost arcade perfect. The attention to details and the effort to find a workaround is unbelievable. Hopefully the upcoming stages would be a bit easier....

Niiice, I actually prefer the colours in the hack versus the more washed out CPS original.
Stunning work! So glad you're still working on it and didn't abandon this project on the first "dead end". I dare to say that some parts of the stage look even better than the arcade. They seem to me less blurry and more vibrant! If finished, this project has the potential to be one of the most impressive hacks ever, regardless of console!

Any idea as a guess on final ROM size? - Original game is only 640KB ( 5Mbit )
With that amount of extra detail i would guess maybe 3x the size of original game.

Gens r57 shell mod. It has a lot of debugging tools.

i realized the lake didn't disappear when seeing the comparison, it's just located just at the exit of the windmill and it's static ice lake instead of moving lake
Are you going to add in more of Arthur's walking animations? Also something I noticed. When an enemy dies the explosion always goes fro left to right no matter which direction your attack hits. Perhaps you could code the explosion to rotate depending on the direction you hit the enemy to make the game look more polished.
Não é querer dar uma de fanboy de Mega Drive, nesse Remaster tem tons de sombra q esta mais bonito comparado ao arcade.
Incredible, the difference is night and day, it turns this port from a game I had no interest in whatsoever into a game I'd like to play. And wow, so much cleverness in the tricks used to achieve the results!

The clouds in the first stage took me quite some time, and I’m never satisfied with the result. But I’ll get back to that.

Watching this remaking in real time is pretty cool. Goes to show how much the Genesis could do if not for cost cutting on cartridge size and possibly time constraints as they rushed some products out. This was always a good version that played identical and looked solid overall, but imagine if this is what they gave people back when it originally came out. They would've been blown away if they got a version like this.
