The snake at the beginning is actually a plain-bellied water snake (Nerodia erythrogaster)-harmless. It is one of the main snakes mistaken for the venomous cottonmouth moccasin (Agkistrodon piscivorous). I love the swamps and videos like this!

A little follow up, water moccasins are fat and have slit pupils unlike other water snakes
That snake is why I go in the swamps in January to mid-February. I turned up the volume for this. I love the sounds of the saw cutting through the roots; the sound of sloshing; the sound of that root popping when you know the tree is finally coming out. That's an incredible find, by the way. It has a great deal of character in such a short tree.

I just got a bald cypress this year. Found it at Lowe’s on the bargain shelf because the top died off. So I grabbed it and planted it in my front yard. That same Lowe’s store has a row of bald cypress growing out in the parking lot and have a fair number of seed pods. Im waiting for them to fall so I can collect them for propagation. I have grown an affinity for the native flora of the American Southeast. While in South Carolina, was collecting fallen cones from loblolly pines and live oak acorns. I’m very new with seed propagation on trees, but am willing to try it as a second approach next to air layering. I’m pretty patient, so if the seeds sprout, I’ll be planting them in the raised garden and let them do their thing. It could be interesting. I’m from Baltimore county, so I don’t see deep southern material like this regularly; and seeing it growing in my yard would be pretty wild.

Would putting a clear plastic bag over the tree and container help it stabilize since this would create a greenhouse effect?
That's not necessary, it went straight in soil at the end of the day.

I did collect in late winter, march. it's best to wait. you're likely to kill the tree in the middle of summer.

It's sad when you live in Louisiana but dont have any land to go collect Bald Cypress Yamadori from. Everytime I see one of these videos I get damn jealous lol
Hey there, I feel that. I don't live there anymore. It's the same for me in California. I don't own any land here, it's been divided up there. I plan to own land though and I hope you get yours too too someday. Until then you just have to push yourself to find a legitimate and safe way to hunt trees. You have time before the next season starts, what else is stopping you?
@@bonsaihunters Honestly just unsure of the legal requirements for Lousiana wildlife and fishery. The section I saw regarding it is very.... unclear lol. In the mean time I am starting off alot of seedlings to prep for a few years later. Started over 100 desert roses about a week ago and already got around 30 sprouted. Might go hunting for oak and pine later today where I live in Baton Rouge.
@@Agia Sounds sweet, Rose's are dope! Hey just keep diggin, if there's a will, there's a way! Pines are what's up, one of my biggest regret is not growing them when I was a teenager.
@@bonsaihunters Really debating planting some Black Pine seeds now and letting my son take them over in another 14-15 years. I figure 10 or so starting now would put him in a good spot when he is 16-17. Any suggestions for some good indoor trees that would get some girth over a 10 year period?
@@Agia thats a great idea! Ficus is the only one I know that's good inside, basically tropical trees, palms, and jades are what I know.

Put a pump and a generator on the boat and blast the roots with water from the swamp.
That would be more work, those roots were easy as apple pie.

That's not a moccasin/cottonmouth, probably a banded water snake or some other harmless water snake.
