Final day of London 3 day special Arek gets a surprise visit from Gatwick Police about trespass on private land! But it turns out somebody has called the Police to report suspicious behaviour about the other chap being involved in money laundering?! Never mind.. enjoy the crabbing planes and fantastic Gatwick Airport
As an airline pilot we often see spotters around the airport. Personally I see them as an extra (free) asset for the Police, providing eyes and ears around the airport. They are often more up to speed than the Police with who are 'regulars' and can therefore spot suspicious behaviour.
I’m a train driver and aviation enthusiast. I have to agree with your rationale regarding the spotters I see around our rail network. All very respectful too I must add.

If airports stopped treating spotters like criminals, and provided suitable viewing areas there would be no need for everybody's time to be wasted.
It would also provide revenue for the airport.
It does make sense. Look at Manchester RVP a fantastic place for Aviation Enthusiasts but they also have TAS members that can directly influence Airport decisions. The most important thing is to raise awareness and hopefully that plants the same seeds as in Manchester
Amsterdam has several marked spotting areas with car parks and seasonably food carts and even toilets. People still often trespass on private property, including a nearby cemetery, park in no parking zones, and generally make a nuisance of themselves.
I work near the airport, we on occasion get spotters trying to use our company car park, which is clearly marked as for employees and guests only. It gives all spotters a bad name.

Love the way one of the guys proudly proclaimed he'd been working there for 18 years as Airport Police but he didn't know where the public footpaths are. Poor.
Why is it poor? Unless you look at an Ordnance Survey map (there's no reason a Police Officer ever would do this) you aren't going to know where the footpaths are.Both ends of the footpath aren't easy to see when you drive past them.

Glad it was sensibly resolved, but remember your rights. You are legally in a public place. The police have no power to ask you to stop filming, nor do they have any power to request your name and address. Be polite but you are entitled to ask them under what powers they are using.
Also ask them for the number of the 'report' that apparently brought them to you. Every report is given a number.

I have a good friend lives near Gatwick and he was out with his old 'big' video cam some years ago when he had his collar felt by probably same guys they said someone had called in saying they had seen a person with a 'rocket' !!! launcher at the end of the runway ....... you handled this textbook credit to you.

Wow Thanks So Much For Sharing This! I have recently gone into that field with a friend and security moved us on. We were surprised to hear that you need a license to be there. The woman that moved us on was extremely rude about us and started wondering why the fence was broken down. 20 years of working there and she didn't know what a plane spotter was! Anyway Nice Video!
You don't need a 'licence' to be there as a 'being in a field licence' doesn't exist.There's a public footpath that bisects the path up from the road that anyone and everyone has an equal right to use.Stay on it and no one can ask you to leave.

common sense is required with our hobby in aviation at all times. But with the Greek authorities the issue was provened on the final account it was a recognised hobby the spotters were released.

Same thing would have happened if you'd intruded at any UK airbase, and rightly so.
In my youth and late teens to very early 20's, I used to live in Mid-Sussex. I was always polite to the police. never had a reason not to be and as such, they were always great with me.
I recall once being at the bottom of my drive chatting to a friend after being in the pub. It was about 12:30am. Police motorcyclist came past, turned around and came to see what we were doing. So we got talking, he got off his motorbike and lit up a cigarette too. 10 mins later and a police car arrived. They also got out, lit up and we chatted for the next 1/2 hour.
The following weekend a group of us went to see a band play in a local town. however, due to someone leaving early, I took everyone back. In my Mini. There were 6 of us inside.
When we got back to the town we lived in, we got pulled over by the police (1am). it was the same police as a few nights ago. They lightly ticked me off and said don't overload your car again 8-))...

I got stopped and questioned by police 4 times one day spottig at LGW airport.
Lol i know they have security to be concerned with but thats taking it too far.
I know they were panning a spotters ID card scheme at one time, that never seemed to materialise

People calling in for this are just stupid…. Suspects intending harm don’t stand in the middle of open fields for hours where everyone can see them. Just wasting Police resources.

They're right about the extra pair of eyes. In Australia they generally have a positive view on planespotters as well because they do add an extra layer of security.
As bad as its reputation currently is as an operational airport, Manchester airport has really embraced spotting and spotters. In the 70s when I was a little lad my Dad and I would be moved-on by the police from standing on Ringway Road watching the planes, and occasionally we were told to leave the airport terminal as we weren't passengers intending to fly!
While it has a (IMO well deserved) bad reputation, it seems to be improving loads.
I've been through MAN 4 times this year, each time I've been through security/passport control within 10 minutes and the most my flights have been delayed by is 10 minutes
I next fly out in mid-summer though, so lets see if it's as bad as last year or if they truly are improving!

Some thirty years ago, a friend and I were stood outside the perimeter of Heathrow, at the end of the runway, waiting for Concorde to take off and fly over us. As expected, the security police came around, and when they knew what we were doing, they just moved on.
I have been stopped dozens of times by the police because in Italy it is forbidden to film trains and stations, finally they asked me for my documents while I was filming a ship leaving the port. Yes in Poland these archaic laws are still place too. Not really enforced but nobody wants to mess with Police there. In UK… asking for ID is really out of the ordinary and only special powers allow public identification… the terrorist act. This was a bit dodgey from the Police buuut. We cleared up the public footpath issue once and for all.

PC Farley and PC Ball called on radio to say of Arek we have a very professional chap here. They were amazed by the view of the runway and then asked Arek to mention them on his live stream! 😀

I was there a couple of days later in the exact same spot.I've been around Gatwick for more than fifty years and didn't know how much of a better view you get from walking up that little hill.Don't forget there's a public footpath that crosses that footpath from the road about half way across that field.
That isn’t a public foot path sadly from the road. It’s a private road.
I'd love to see your camera rig, always awesome to watch the big birds fly in. I'm always amazed how flexible the wings and the tyres can take the load.

This is the difference between British and American police. If this was in America it would have been “GET ON THE FLOOR”, struggling with getting the spotter handcuffed so he is arrested for resisting arrest, equipment gets damaged in the tussle and the spotter gets jailed for several days before the charges are dropped and then the cops end up getting sued which means the taxes go to bad policing. The cops are seen as totally adversarial and that is why civilians give the bird to most American cops. This is bad policing
In the UK it’s have a nice chat, realising these people are also watching the area so they are an extra pair of eyes in case something happens… and then the cops are on their way with a wave and a smile after they investigate and see it’s just someone who is really interested in spotting planes.
Polite greeting, check the situation, confirm that nothing is going on and then they leave the spotter to continue his hobby. That is top notch policing in my mind. Some American cops do this too but too many are adversarial for adversarial’s sake and just want to get an arrest for any reason. Some British cops are like this too but very few.
I’ve seen one video where the the cop says the driver is being moody but the guy is just answering questions and supplying the things that were asked for. He sounded really confused. The cop was behaving like he was talking to a completely different person and then he dragged the guy out of the car and assaulted him. There are spotters here in the USA that get queried by law enforcement as well. I don't really understand what the problem is

You handled that very well Arek. I know another channel that spots there the police do check on people.If you're not where you are suppose to be you will be asked to leave. This channel also has permission to spot at the particular location he streams at from the farmer whose land he is on. The police will still come out and talk to him on occasion.

@@MaccAviation even IF you were standing off the footpath, trespass is a civil matter and no concern of the police, unless you’re on airport land, then they could be acting as agent of the landowner and / or there could be bye laws.
Always suspicious when they want the live feed to be "postponed" - why? What are they doing that they feel is hindered by a potential audience? It always sounds like stop recording we don't want to be caught doing something wrong... Precisely the opposite of what they say "if your not doing anything wrong why object to being recorded".

in my country, thanks to laws, you are perfectly allowed to be there, private property or not, all you want as long as you stay outside the airports restricted areas and stay a respectfull distance away from private residences and dont get in the way of the land owners.

At RAF Alconbury the Plane Spotters were my friends. I could count on then to tell me about strangers, asking questions. And then provide us with their photos. I am certain MI5 and the CIA were thankful. It was the height if the Cold War, and some were likely up to no good.

by exercising your rights and not showing ID, it will upset the police man and he will make your life difficult
Oh great idea, you are in close proximity to a major international airport, not giving ID is just goig to piss off the local police and the next thing you will see are anti terrorist police with machine guns, much easier to just say what you are doing and show some ID and let them go off and find someone less cooperative to entertain them. Most British police officers are polite and do not want to pick fights with people just for laughs (possible exception for the Met police) it costs you nothing to be polite and respectful

A bit random really. They got a call from somebody to come check Arek but the other guy was nicked for money laundering? At least its cleared up once and for all. Public Footpaths - Farmers worst enemy in UK - Public right of way by law with a minimum width of 1.5m by a fields edge. Keep tidy, respect others and stay professional and avoid arrest!
Did they arrest the other aviation enthusiast that was stood next to Arek because it seems that the the police left the field and nobody was arrested? the Impression that l got was the radio comms about the guy arrested for money laundering was about another incident elsewhere at the airport and it was not the guy stood next to Arek. they were after probably radio comms about somebody arrested in the airport at security

Great work by police, professionally curious, polite and once you explained you were on a public footpath, and skied a few questions to find out your intentions, they wished you well and said goodbye. If they get a report they have to act on it and investigate, it’s nice to know that they’re interested about activity around the airport and don’t just ignore reports from the public!

Can't fault the police for doing their job since airport security has become a sensitive issue. Arek handled the situation perfectly by remaining calm and polite. Fair play to PC's Farley and Ball as they were both professional and understanding. In the end the situation was resolved by respect and common sense!

The police were probably more concerned that you may have the intention of launching a drone. They’re still very concerned that LGW was shut down for a lengthy period following the drone incident a while back and will therefore check anything out deemed to be suspicious.

The police clearly wanted to 'check you out', even if it was farm land, there is little they can do as it's initially a civil issue so the farmer would have to get court action for removal. If as you said it was a public footpath through a farmers field, then you have total rights to remain on the footpath (but not the field). I suspect they just wanted to check you're a nice guy :)
No need for a court. The moment a land owner asks you to leave and you refuse, it's then aggravated trespass which is a criminal offence.

people must remember that there was a major security incident at Gatwick a few years ago. the airport was closed for three days hundreds of flights were cancelled and over 100,000 passengers had their travel plans disrupted in the run up to Christmas because somebody was flying a drone on the approach to Gatwick airport, so is it any surprise that the police are a little more vigilant checking out people standing on the approach for hours on end ?
This is why laws have been put into place. Flight restriction zones on all class drones by airport and flyer IDs must be present on drones. The reality is that in UK walking or standing around in publicly accessible places isn’t illegal and isn’t suspicious and neither is filming or taking pictures. The grounds for IDing Arek are very dodgy!
Security is top priority and it is good to see the police coming round once in a while. Hopefully this boosts interest inside the airport staff too and maybe they will build a viewing area?

Stop and question: police powers
A police officer can stop you and ask what your name is what you’re doing in the area or where you are going.
You don’t have to answer any questions or give any other information and refusal to provide information is not grounds for arrest..
but for many years airport security has been very tight and police regularly speak to aviation enthusiasts around airport perimeters just to see what they are doing and why they are there. you could legally refuse to provide any information but then it starts to look like you are trying to hide somthing
@@Mach_One_Photos it is the fine line the police have to tread isn’t it. And exercising one’s rights is not grounds for suspicion. But this is not an auditing channel so Arek did what many would do.
One incident bears no relationship to the other. Police exceeded their powers. They could have spoken to the landowner and /or merely observed that the guys had no drones, surface to air missiles, or really long sticks. Asked them what they were doing and established there was no credible threat. This wouldn't have happened in the course of a normal days flying operations. It's only because some highly undesirable people had been invited to the Coronation and were using a public airport.
PC Farley and PC Ball still did not follow the law which is the only thing they can enforce. They have no authority to ask for names and they had any sense or intelligence they'd have understood that you were plane spotters and not even spoke to you. So even though they said they like plane spotters since they are a 2nd pair of eyes for the police, they still harassed you and caused unnecessary stress and worry. And now your details are recorded on the police database. All because they had to handle a call from a belligerent farmer. The farmer is the one who the police should've spoken to.
The police have every right to ask for names, and you have no right to refuse to provide the information. You need to watch more Blackbelt Barrister, he’s explained this a number of times.

The participants in this video, including the police, are confused about the law. A public footpath may be used by the public only for pedestrian transit but the owner (or other person entitled to possession) of the land over which the public footpath runs can give permission for other uses so long as there is no obstruction of the public right of way.

After the drone incident which cost millions of pounds it's inevitable - if you hang around major airport runways you are going to be challenged. Of course there are more and more incidents of police abusing powers in ordinary settings but you can't take chances around an airport.
Oh yea. And the excellent publicity the anti drone company got for it. Now coincides like that are very suspicious

no mention of an arrest was heard by me. Police are guided to offer cautions unless an actual crime is committed. As you correctly stated you were on a public footpath mearly streaming air field footage

Airport police? As in British Transport Police? If so, would they even have powers, outside the airport perimeter? This probably happened because of the Coronation. I believe both Heathrow and Gatwick were used by some guests.
They are employed by the airport, there are extra bylaws at airports. Another example of privately employed police is at Westfield Shopping Centres. Their priority is therefore to protect the corporation who employ them; not the public. Which is why it’s a conflict of interest.
@@AbsoluteAudits they are employed by Sussex police. There are no private police in the UK. Airport police are still part of the county constabulary in which the airport is based, but have specialist role. The adhere to the same code and legislation as any other constable in England and Wales.
@@RM-hf2hs that’s wrong. All police forces are private companies, apart from City of London. Also you ignored the part where I give the example of Westfield having a private police force. They still officially are employed by the regional force, such at the met, but are specifically hired by Westfield, who pay for them.
Similar applies to airports that have their own stations etc, but not sure it’s exactly the same.

Companies cannot employ any constable. Companies can fund extra policing, but they are not privately employed. For example, a football club will fund extra policing on a match day due to the shear cost of policing a large premiership match, but no constable has any allegiance or duty to the club or its desires. All constables abide by the same home office rules, not a private company. The city of london and the other 47 forces of England and Wales are the same. Police Scotland and psni are devolved from the home office and have their own rules, but it's still based on common law a s policing by consent

Every force apart from COL police have a unique D-U-N-S number, which is as much proof as is needed that they are separate profit making companies. It might not be convenient for your point, but facts aren’t always convenient.
