Very informative! I would like to add that language does not have to be spoken!!! There are many different signed languages around the world, mainly used with the Deaf, with their own syntax and other linguistic properties!!

I thought I had wanted to study linguistics before watching this video; now I know that I do! A most informative and clearly explained dissertation, Sir...

Thanks a lot for this explanation, it's really brief and understandable even for non-native ESL teachers.

Dr, your classes are wonderful. I sent you an invitation on Facebook yesterday and I have decided to stick to them for thorough training in linguistics. However, I am fighting with the data required for creating and account, especially with the second part cncerning a university or an organisation. I am an ESL teacher with the Bilingual Training Programe posted at Ebolowa Linguistic Centre in the south of Cameroon. Thank you for helping me. In fact, I started with Lecture LIN 101 today, pending formal registration. Thank you very much. teacher

A thorough grounding in linguistics is certainly important for all aspiring polyglots. It is such a pity that linguistics is not a compulsary subject at school.

Questions: Am I correct in my findings that the word "Family" has an origin that refers to household? Am I correct in my findings that the word "Son" comes from route words of sound as in sonic, resound, etc. Am I correct in my findings that daughter comes from a word "Tochter meaning offspring. Just thinking something through. Would be appreciative if you could help me out with some quick feedback. Thank you!

The areas of linguistics (since it is a giant macro field) have to be distinguished along different lines. For exampled a Field Linguist does all 3, as might a SLA researcher then you have a Sociolinguist in language change, as differentiated then by computational linguistics, discourse analysis/genre analysis--I think the modern idea of PURPOSE behind the research or application marks the difference not Phonology/Syntax/Pragmatic distinction.

Thank you. I live in London and occasionally Malaga. Does anyone know if I could study linguistics at 54! I live in hope. I think I would have to self study as no building of learning would accept me. I need books. Any teachers of linguistics can advise?
