ET makes a lot of money from its custodial fees, and it holds up the investment process so it can charge you extra "expedite" fees. It doesn't offer a checkbook option. If you really want control over your investments, please think twice about going through ET.

So the custodial fees are to high? Not worth the risk? Please elaborate, bank IRAs aren't paying crap.

Are the contributions in a self directed IRA post tax or pre-tax?

Hi! If the contributions are to a self-directed Traditional IRA, they're pre-tax. If the contributions are to a self-directed Roth IRA, they're post-tax.

If I want to invest in trading cards, other collectables, or cryptocurrency, why exactly do I need you? These tax laws are so stupid. Why do I need a random 3rd party to get the A-OK for me to buy a box of trading cards or a bitcoin.

It's a way to earn profits without paying taxes on those profits.
