another awesome addition... love your con lectures and appreciate the fact you let those who couldn't attend view these informative talks. i cannot wait to see part 2!
Ooh.... Nostalgia.... I'm walking down memory lane... Thanks guys. I loved all these shows and they were a staple of my childhood. Thanks for making me feel like I'm 10 years old again..... Love your videos... Keep up the excellent work! P.S. : tell armless "Vader" I'm pulling for him and I hope he gets his or someone else's arms soon!
Kidd Video has become a favorite to watch on Saturday mornings when I want to have a good 1984-1985 fix, when pop music was really integrated into movies and TV shows. MTV was officially mainstream at that point, propelling the popularity of movies like "Footloose" and "Purple Rain" along with "Miami Vice", and a lot of kids were hip to that. With the music references in the cartoon, it was very modern. I guess you had to see it at the time to have gotten into it.
Love this panel so far! I hope you mention the often forgotten, or never knew about, Turbo Teen! I enjoyed Kidd Video alot, moreso in my later years because even then it was sooo over the top "80s"!
Hoping to see Mighty Orbots in part 2! That was my favorite of favorites of Saturday morning cartoons and I was devastated when it got cancelled after only 13 eps!Mike and Melinda, you guys do such great panels!!! If I'm ever at a con where you are conducting one it would be the greatest privilege to attend!!!
Gracious I totally miss the 80's and early 90's. Shirt Tales, Pirates of dark water, Thundarr, Galaxy High school. Man, I feel so old wanting the 80's back. LOL. Loved this panel and looking forward to part 2. thanks for the memories!
Great video! I remember most of those shows, but D&D, Jayce, and Galaxy High were my favorites out of that group. I was in a band that did a punkish version of the Galaxy High theme back in the 90's. John Kricfalusi of Ren & Stimpy fame also did character designs on Galaxy High.
I borrowed the Bravestarr DVD once. One of the bonus features stated that this show used CGI as well for vehicles. IIRC, they could only output wireframes at the time, and then the animators would trace over the wireframes (similarly to how they would rotoscope the actors).
And here I thought I've already heard about almost all of these cartoons but then you guys throw me yet another curve ball: Vytor. Now I have to go look it up! I'm SO glad you also talked about Bravestarr which In my opinion is Filmation's best work. One of the big reasons I love this show is because in our local folklore there is this mythical being called a tikbalang which has a man's torso and a horse's head, lower legs and tail. IT is exactly like Thirty-Thirty except he takes it up a notch by being cybernetic and packing a huge shotgun. Also, my girlfriend loves Visionaries because of the great dialogue, thanks for including that, too. Can't wait for part 2!
Dragon's Lair. I remember watching the USA Cartoon Express back in the day and on the little 'We'll be right back' segments I'd see the knight on the train with the characters from the other cartoons. However the show itself was never part of the Cartoon Express programming while I watched it. I always wanted to see it. sounds like I didn't miss much though!
Missed out on Dragoncon last year, but I think I would have enjoyed this panel (and lately, whenever I do go, I try to hit the smaller panels instead of the overcrowded, super long lines ones).
I've read that Bravestarr is what Filmation originally intended He-Man to be, but when Bravestarr was first developed, they decided it was too serious for children and went with He-Man instead... your comments about how hardcore the show was lends credence to that, I'd say.
In Visionaries the magical staffs they carried were independent of their chest totem. The animal on their chest is what they transformed in to and there wasn't really a limit on how often they could change, but the staffs gave them an additional magic power and was a one use thing, until it was dipped back in to the magic pool and recharged.
I'm surprised that Galaxy High was only 13 episodes. I always thought that show was really well done. The Galaxy High Theme Song was also very cool. It's almost as good as the theme song from Duck Tales! Almost...
Re: the final script for Dungeons and Dragons (from the wiki)-- "The script can be found from various sources online and was performed as an audio drama as a special feature for the BCI Eclipse DVD edition of the series." Inside joke for my fellow gamers--the above release was in a red box.
you were getting the power staffs and totems mixed up, the staffs like destuction or lightspeed are ones that need a recharge after they been used, they can used the animal totem any time, unless removed by the chamber from the daggar assalt vehicle ectar, feral, mordred and reekon main powers are from the vehicles they drive, since they toys comes with them from what I heard/read jayce and the wheeled warriors was suppose to end with a movie but never happen, Ithink samurai jack had a similar idea to end its own series
+goemonbeatsnaruto He is right the Totem staves served a different function they were USED to incite a magical spell or ability beyond that of the basic Totem Animal each Spectral Knight had in their chestplate. Also there were some vehicles which had unique abilities as well.
+RetroBlasting It's fine, maybe just as a lesson try to learn to chant one of the Staff spells for fun. :P I mean when you hear a Starscream esque sounding character inciting a demonic spider, you know you are in for trouble!, haha! Btw enjoy a lot of your vids, wether they be on shows or toy repairs.
I'd really recommend Visionaries. In addition to the gimmick of knights transfoming in to animals, the real beauty was the set up of this being a world that goes through ages of technology then magic. At the start of the show the age of technology had ended and so in subsequent episodes you see how people adapted to technology no longer working, like cars only beig useful if pulled by horses.
I'm pretty sure that the reason the LJN toyline didn't include the main characters from the show is because they had their license directly from TSR and had to base their line on characters that appeared in materials published for the game. The bigger failing IMO is the reluctance of the producers to feature the game at all and TSR's failure to create a board game version (similar to HeroQuest) that would have appealed to kids of the age targeted by the toys and the cartoon. I was exposed to both the toys and the cartoon as a kid but I could never figure out what the connection was between them and the game (which I encountered as a really cool book of monsters owned by my babysitter's son). BTW if you track down the original release of the series on DVD it includes the final episode recorded as an audio drama.
+RetroBlasting Michael, I have a question about the 1983 deregulation of children's television you may know the answer to. What were the limits that were in place before '83? I ask because the enforcement of the regulations was very inconsistent. While there were no Scooby toys, there was no shortage of Mego figures of Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman or Batman & Robin while the SuperFriends cartoon was airing every Saturday morning throughout the Seventies. Mego Spider-Man figures were sold while the '68 Spider-Man cartoon aired in syndication until the '81 Saturday morning cartoon showed up. There were toys from Sesame Street and Battlestar Galactica as well. Was there some sort of loophole being exploited or what?
+Wyld staar The FCC prevented companies from trying to use cartoons as advertising for merchandise. Therefore no Scooby Doo toys. Superman, Batman, Spider-man on the other hand were originally comic book characters, and their toys did not have any direct connection to the cartoons so there was no problem there. Battlestar Galactica was not a children's program and Sesame Street is a nonprofit production, so I believe they were not affected either.
+Desslar That makes sense, but I can't help but wonder why the toy companies didn't use this sort of loophole to get around the FCC restrictions more often. For example, Hasbro could have used Marvel's heroes and villains from their Nick Fury comics to make a cartoon and toy line almost identical to what they created later with GI Joe. Instead of GI Joe vs Cobra, it would have been SHIELD vs Hydra. One would think this sort of thing would have been going on all the time to get around the rules, but maybe that's just the benefit of hindsight.
Wyld staar Actually, Hasbro hired Marvel to create the GI Joe comic in order to get around the FCC restrictions. Hasbro wanted to air animated commercials for the 1982 relaunch of the GI Joe toy line, but were not allowed to use animation to advertise toys. So Hasbro created animated commercials that showed all the Joe characters and vehicles but promoted the Marvel comic boook, not the toys. By the next year the FCC restrictions ceased to be enforced, so Hasbro launched the GI Joe cartoon series and animated commericlas that promoted the toys directly.
Thanks. Looking forward to part two and Melinda's presentation. That's pretty quick after you filmed the presentation to know you must edit out one of the opening themes. Was it flagged in the UA-cam upload or did you know ahead of time?
I know Retroblasting is more interested in the 80s, but could you ever consider doing something about Pirates of Dark Water? that show was awesome, and I had two of the toys as a kid, I'd like to see if they were any good altogether.
Really Visionaries and their staves. It is never stated that the staves were related to the totems. The staves had bestowed additional powers. The characters that didn't have staves could power up vehicles.
I was angry that Bravestar mysteriously went off the air in the area I lived in after only a small handful of episodes. It probably had something to do with the drug episode, though I don't remember ever seeing it.
That was fun! Visionaries had a great intro but for some reason the theme song seems to belong to a rapper named Killah Priest in a song called "Dead" he uses the entire opening of Visionaries. Someone should ask Flint Dille (show creator) about this. Does he own it, should he be making money off it?
+kidchuckle Strangely, and in typical UA-cam hypocritical fashion, you can *watch* the full scene on UA-cam. Just search Bravestarr The Price and it comes up!
Useless trivia but one of the stars of Kidd Video was Robbie Rist aka Cousin Oliver of the Brady Bunch and voiced Michaelangelo in the original Tmnt movies.

Dungeons and Dragons!! I have the box set yaaay!!! definitely my favourite, Ive heard that fans took the script of the last episode and have tried to make something out of it, I'm not exactly sure what or where, also whispers of making a film of it maybe.....Im unsure.
I'm only six minutes in and hoping Retro Blasting at least mentions Mighty Orbots (1984) by Tokyo Movie Shinsha. It's a quintessential anime that lost out to the less than satisfactory GoBots in a legal dispute surrounding "Godmars". I will be on the lookout for a future review on Orbots. The show, in my feeling, is worthy of an analysis.

With you totally even though I am 12, I find the 80s more interesting than today
Yes
I love Galaxy High!!!
It still holds up today.
So many cartoons that I am not familiar to...thanks for the video!
Bravestarr does deserve more credit.
Definitely! You can get the complete DVD series on Amazon for about $15.00!
Yeah, the episode mentioned in this presentation entitled "The Price", was pretty damn powerful.
Never seen it
Great Panel . I remember it seemed like by 1985 and up weekday animation was becoming more popular that Saturday morning
Nice shout out to Galaxy High, I loved the show as a kid and yes that song friggin rocks. Also loved the them of Kidd Video, not so much the show.
Visionaries was before its time. I would've loved to have seen more than 13 episodes.

Flagged. Very frustrating. And flagged on the "Private" setting no less. Take heed. UA-cam does not honor privacy toggles.
Really wish I was here. It also seems that France didn't get that much cartoon of that era from what I can see.
Awesome insight .
ah Kidd Video that's the one I was trying to remember!
Awesome! PS I left you some in your discussions
I know Retroblasting is more interested in the 80s, but could you ever consider doing something about Pirates of Dark Water? that show was awesome, and I had two of the toys as a kid, I'd like to see if they were any good altogether.
Are you guys going to post excel file/pdf of the full list of 80s cartoons?
How do you find the script for Dungeons And Dragons Episode 28?
Really Visionaries and their staves. It is never stated that the staves were related to the totems. The staves had bestowed additional powers. The characters that didn't have staves could power up vehicles.
I'd like to see an episode on the Bravestarr cartoon and towline someday.

figures. Damn you youtube. Thanks guys for working so damn hard. These con stuff are great listening in the background while I draw!
Galaxy High...damn I'd pushed that show from my memory ha ha
where is part 2 by chance, I cannot find it by crom
whats the show like saved by the bell (with the band)? I can't make out what that person shouted out
+Andrew Breckenridge you're totally right! thanks, that was driving me nuts

+John McHenry He was also in Galactica 1980.
joel1975 Thanks Joel. I forgot about that one.
just remembered like blackstar heman and skelators toy swords were fit to combine like this cartoon.
Dungeons and Dragons!! I have the box set yaaay!!! definitely my favourite, Ive heard that fans took the script of the last episode and have tried to make something out of it, I'm not exactly sure what or where, also whispers of making a film of it maybe.....Im unsure.
Wasn't Tiamat also made into an action figure by LJN? Or did I just dream that?
Wait, Melinda Mock was into a cartoon featuring Ookla the Moc and she made no reference to the character? Golden opportunity there
Unless I'm mistaken, the other D&D crossover show figures would be Strongheart and Tiamat, however I almost think Tiamat was made because of the show.
I'm only six minutes in and hoping Retro Blasting at least mentions Mighty Orbots (1984) by Tokyo Movie Shinsha. It pleases me to see Galaxy High School in the title card. As they say, Good on you, Retro Blasting. Bionic Six ought to be, also.
Good lord Melinda ia gorgeous!
Very cool
If you have no objections, I have a suggestion for a future panel. 80's cartoons that have had remakes in the last 15 years and how they are better or worst then the original show. There are many show you can do this with such as he-man, gi-joe, transformers, thunder cats (oops didn't like that show), ect.
Good idea!!!
Did Tranzor Z have more than 1 season?
Nope. The company doing the dub only dubbed 65 episodes out of 100+ in Mazinger. They were not able to license the sequel Great Mazinger. Instead they licensed Dancougar and attempted to sell a dub to stations. But they went nowhere with that effort.

I was a huge fan of the Bionic Six and Silverhawks. I guess it's too bad they had some of the flimsiest toys ever created.
But, there was a Blackstar toy line.
I loved Galaxy Rangers
I loved Saturday morning toons
I remember one station always had loony toons reruns and not a lot of new programming how many times can you watch roadrunner and Buggs reruns
The Smurf’s were on forever
And then after the cartoons they would have live action cheesy sci-fi shows from the 70s. Ark 2 Jason of star command
Sunday would have Jonny Quest
The woody wood pecker show
What about the cows of moo Mesa? Haha-god it was strange
I want a Thundarr movie.
Bravestarr Rules!
kewl
Broken Vader RetroBlasting T shirt !!!!
Big smile Thanks!
Man, there was never anything good about Visionaries and Jaycee and the Wheeled Warriors. These were two properties hardly any kids watched or truly liked.
Awesome episode again guys, just fantastic
Hate me if you will, I gotta kick out of Galaxy High.
galaxy rangers
I had a 30/30 action figure, but I was really disappointed with Sarah Jane (his gun). The cartoon was a gigantic two-handed cannon you could fit your head in the huge flared barrel. The toy version was all one colour, no proper detail, just a straight one-piece mould in dull graphite/grey, and it was tiny in comparison, fitting into one of the figure's hands like a pistol. Totally lame.
So bald Mens ;P
satan does not look like that, read the bible it tells you what he looks like
That git at 2:42 mocking Melinda's hand gestures. lol
just a question not a critique why did split your panel videos?
Because UA-cam's processing times have recently become egregious. Over 20 minutes on a video and you're looking at potentially hours of processing time lately.
+RetroBlasting eww okay now i understand.
