'She Put The Baby In MORTAL Danger' | Julia Hartley-Brewer v Kate Roughley
Вставка
- Опубліковано 26 вер 2024
- Former prison officer Vanessa Frake joins Julia Hartley-Brewer to discuss the psychological disorders that drive women to harm children in their care.
Kate Roughley, 37, strapped nine-month-old Genevieve Meehan face down on to a bean bag for more than 90 minutes.
Genevieve was also tightly swaddled and covered with a blanket as she was put to sleep by Roughley when she was in her care at Tiny Toes nursery in Cheadle Hulme, Stockport.
Roughley discovered Genevieve’s lifeless body on the afternoon of May 9 2022 before colleagues and then paramedics attempted to revive the child but her condition was irreversible and she was pronounced dead later that day in hospital.

Never leave your children with anyone who doesn’t love them
I agree, nobody will love your children like you do, family are the only ones and very close friends who I ever let watch my child. It's hard now with everything being so expensive and lots of parents have no choice to use nursery's. RIP Geneieve ❤
@@Rocklover478
I agree some parents have to work ..but my adult children have been luck they’ve had me to babysit my grandkids.. I
The whole idea of tying a baby face down and let her die is well beyond "not loving like a parent".
She is sadistic, an abuser, a control freak, there is no way this was her first time creating an abusive situation she enjoyed immensely.
She is not exactly representative of nursery workers.
@@susivarga7303 Hear, hear!!!
14 YEARS. That's not fair or right. She should've got 30 years at least.
Oh definitely couldn't agree more life should mean life I think more than 30 years should be no chance of release that baby has lost her whole life and didn't get a chance to live pretty much any how sad 😢 💔
14 years IS NOT JUSTICE!!! ....I hope she gets what she deserves in prison.....she is an absolute MONSTER 😡
This is disgusting, that's why I would never let anyone watch my kids when they were young the only person I trusted was my mother, I know I was very lucky to have her
Same here, only trusted my mum or very close friends and family for babysitting.
Same👍
Update: sentencing just announced this afternoon - she got 14-years. Judge had to follow the sentencing guidelines to allow for mitigating; the nursery was heavily understaffed and this worker was way-in over her head in terms of being able to cope (obviously). Not sticking up for her in any way, shape or form, but her defence/KC have argued that there are people more senior than her that let the ball-drop and need to share full responsibility too. I fully agree. There are increasing calls for the (very wealthy) nursery owners and the on-site management team to be prosecuted separately. Investing in a child-care business, for profit, is not like other types of business, where you just hire a few people and leave them to manage it without supervision and accountability. These are vulnerable human lives. So yes, there absolutely should be further prosecutions in my opinion. Such a tragic and completely avoidable case. My heart aches for this little girl and for her family..❤
Exactly why my children were cared for by me at home.
Sadly not everyone has that choice.
Why did they employ her. She doesn’t even look like a kind caring person and anyone can see that a mile off.
The principal function of these nurseries is about making money, not providing TLC.
That was murder!
The difference in law between Murder and Manslaughter is that in murder there is a prior intention to kill. Manslaughter is an unlawful act (such as an assault) that resulted in death even though the perpetrator had no prior intention to kill
My God! what those parents must have gone through to witness their baby's dying minutes with CCTV feedback - I am lost for words and what Kate Roughley did was murder - she deliberately did what she did. Poor little Genevieve - a beautiful innocent little one - heart broken to hear this
I went to that nursery back in 2009
@@seananand9934 You should be thanking God you're still alive to tell the tale
@@freedomofspeech766 Kate was a nice lady she is friends with the kids
Poor little mite rest in peace little one may God comfort her parents
I always recall a sentence in a book I read many years ago - 'If people don't care they cannot be paid enough to do so'. That applies to Roughley, the management and owners of this nursery.
I would never leave a vulnerable loved one, either young or elderly, in a setting where they are essentially farmed for economic gain by owners and handled by low paid, often disaffected and sometimes incompetent or frankly malign staff.
A beautiful little girl 🕊
Very well said.this is heartbreaking.
I recall many years ago on a maternity ward when I was having my second child. I heard a midwife refere to the babies as "being thick" meaning they were stupid.the way she said it,put my hackles up i was hyper vigilant around her after that,i would not ask her for assistance or let her handle my baby.
I can’t get my head round this and how can it be manslaughter not murder,it’s horrendous shocking ,the poor parents it’s heartbreaking omg,😪

As someone who has worked in childcare for the last year as agency staff (meaning I have worked in countless settings), I have observed that treating children with a lack of care and dignity is common place in nurseries regardless if staff are trained or not. This case was an extreme example of neglect and abuse, but leaving children to cry, speaking terribly to children etc is the norm. I am waiting for the day when panorama or some other tv show reveals just what goes on in these spaces, and then as a society we can have a much more healthier and realistic discussion about how we are raising our children. The macdonaldisation of childcare centres is the biggest social experiment of our time, and it is going to bring a ticking time bomb of extreme mental health issues in children with innumerable consequences to society as a whole
Goodness... that is terrifying to read.
Even the ones who survive will have problems later in life as their tiny minds absorb this awful abuse ... their loving parents will never be able to take away the deep embedded pain as it remains there on a sub conscious level
How was she allowed to work with kids
As a deputy nursery manager, I can honestly say I have no idea.
@@lemonjelly625 We are seeing women abusers in care. Look at the Letby case its henious.
The managers of these nurseries and hospitals need to be veted also. I have worked with managers that are brilliant. And some who are not fit for purpose.
@@lasttango7522 I agree. However, with dbs checks, it’s getting better. Also, Lucy letby worked a hospital. It’s completely different to a nursery where we also don’t have day and night shifts. Safeguarding is an extremely high topic and I’m telling you that most workers would have put two and two together and gone to lado. Where I work, head office have a big involvement and my manager is very good. The staff work their socks off and any minor ‘less than the absolute best’ professional practice is spotted and stamped out. Training is a big thing and as managers, we do regular checks to make sure risk assessments and registers are up to date several times a day as well as random peer on peers and very regular supervisions. Essentially, we watch very closely. We do watch cctv back if we have any concerns. The other person who suggested watching a days worth of cctv every night clearly doesn’t understand the industry and is just being totally silly. No nursery needs to do this and suggesting it is totally over the top. It’s like saying all nursery staff are abusers. It’s extremely rare and perspective is needed. I believe this was an independent setting where training must have been poor.
How can a nine month old need punishment? Insane
A vulnerable 9 month old baby should not be with strangers in a nursery, she should be with her MOTHER.
Well said
In an ideal world, yes. However, not all Mothers can afford yo stsy home eith their children.
Tell the government this!
@@peterlee584Babies who are seperated from their natural mothers at too early an age grow up with permanant personality disorders involving self-centeredness with inability to bond and form meaningful relationships.
If, for whatever reason, a woman is either unable or unwilling to give a new baby her full attention during at least the vital, formative first year of its life she should defer motherhood until such times as she can.
@@laurencooper3169 Parenthood is the responsibility of PARENTS, not nanny state.
No training, no standards, no overwatch. These are just some of the reasons why someone one would think it was appropriate to restrain a child in such a way.
Imagine the noise that the child made as it struggled for breath, and she was able to ignore it. Only someone incapable of empathy could stand the sounds that poor wee mite must have made as life left her.
This woman needs to be investigated vigorously and quickly.
She was a deputy manager, this means that she would have had training and qualified. This is a problem with her being evil, not ignorant. Believe me.
What do you mean when you say she needs to be investigated? She was already been found guilty and sentenced.
Evil woman
EVIL yes but not deserved of the title woman as that would be a huge insult to ALL decent loving women outhere.
She'll be getting a nice welcome from the ladies in Styal or whichever prison she ends up I'm sure😊
It's the usual suspects, Letby, Shipman and now this.
It's the norm for men to harm babies she said.
Bullshit. That baby wouldn't have been in one bit of danger in my care.
Women seem to put themselves on some kind of self righteous pedestal when it comes to caring.
in the meantime you get the likes of Beverly Allitt, Margaret Wade, Lucy Letby, Louise Woodward, Rosemary West, Myra Hindley & Joanna Dennehy that are just pure evil.
Her name is so appropriate isnt it ?
Heartbreaking, poor parwnts and grandparents.
How do these people slip through the net, and get jobs ?
Its just so sad. That beautiful little girl.
Handled the baby Roughly
Parents are having to pay large chunks of their salaries to have their kids in these types of nurseries. It's a small fortune for people with little training or standards of care to look after your children.
I have worked with children over 20 years, and I am fully qualified. Also, I am a mother. In no ways would I hurt someone else's flesh and blood or my very own children. So do not label all of us child's practitioners as not qualified to look after other people's children.
In this world, there are all evil people who work in all different job roles.
@@julienewman1761 I know quite a few people that work in this field and have installed equipment into nurseries and been around the people the frequent them. All perfectly nice women but there are a lot I wouldn't give a complex task too to say the least. The field doesn't require the bravest and brightest of us. Yet we are paying a fortune for it. I generally hate our society for putting mothers in a position where they have to pay someone else to raise their own children.
Regardless if you take offence because you think your the exception that's a you problem. I'm not here to validate you.
@@julienewman1761 A normal well balanced human being without qualifications could do a better job. I babysat my neighbour's baby when I was only 14 years old. (On Saturday evenings) She'd be out for about 4 hours and I'd be checking up on the baby and picking him up and rocking and comforting him whenever he cried.Even at that age with no experience I knew how delicate and precious a baby was.
@tyhar7493 you do know children can get ill when being at nursery. You do know all staff are first aid trained, just in case some child becomes very ill. I have had children who have had fits at nursery. So it is a brave job to deal with dangerous situations like fitting or choking. Not many people who work in offices are fully trained first aider or brave.
MORE sense: Pay _mothers NOT strangers_ to mind our babes/kids! _Makes NO sense!_ Mums at home! But Govt wanting $
There are such things as Maternity Allowances and Child Benefit that are payable to all mothers in the UK regardless of means.
These are payable in respect of all human babies/children, but not kids which are baby goats.
working in child protection/MH we had a mother who had 3 children removed from for their safety yet kept her childminding licence and continued to run a service in the home deemed unfit for habitation. Ofsed refused to remove her licence.

This is spine chilling! The poor little darling. Pour evil at work...
With all due respect, I don’t know any other nursery worker who would EVER do this. Genuinely, I cannot name one person I know. Why the hell would ANYONE put a child face down. It goes against every part of our training. It’s giving nursery workers a bad name. She is clearly mental. I am a deputy and would never ever ever do such a thing. Psychopathic and not representative of this caring profession. I appreciate this report but don’t berate a whole profession. Of course managers don’t review cctv daily. We are an industry under immense pressure of under funding from government , no staff and increased ratios. 99% of staff work under incredible stress but would never hurt a child. My nursery has intense internal trying very regularly. It’s an extremely rare incident. Bless the poor child and her family. ❤What an evil woman who did this, lock her up and throw away the key.
Heart breaking.. 💔 The evil woman murdered this child on purpose. No doubt. Should be in prison for life like USA.. life for a life. What an excuse for judge to say prisons are over crowded and has no other convictions!!! So what? She killed a child. One time is enough… A baby of 9 months old. Unbelievable sentence.. 14 years reduced to 9 years. Yes CCCTV .. where are the people watching it!!!!!! Fuming 😡 .
This is henious! Shockingly disgusting and I hope she goes to jail forever!
Sending love to her parents, R.I.P Gigi ❤
She will be eligible for release after serving only 9 years, and 4 months in prison.
What a horrible woman i just do not know how she could do that to a beautiful little girl my heart goes out toher parents i hope she rots in prison.
The difference in law between Murder and Manslaughter is that in murder there is a prior intention to kill. Manslaughter is an unlawful act (such as an assault) that resulted in death even though the perpetrator had no prior intention to kill.
The prosecution needs to appeal against the leniency of the sentence as 14 years is blantely ridiculous she should be serving between 25 to 40 years at least
That is not manslaughter

A monster I hope justice is served in prison by the other prisoners 14 years is an insult poor baby rip thoughts go out to the family 😢
Oh it will be...
Knowing how heartless Julia is I’m shocked she wasn’t in favour of the disgusting nursery worker!
MONSTER
So, Julia Hartley Brewer and the ex-governor feel that they can second-guess the judgment of the court based upon having read a tiny article about the case. I can't find anything of any substance to read about the case. I can't even read anything that explains what it means by being "strapped to a beanbag". I imagine that it was difficult enough for the court to decide and they heard all the evidence. The arrogance of these two on this show to decide that they know better is phenomenal.
Two ignorant women.
Tell you what sweetie if that was my child reading a fowl comment like yours. You would definately know what been strapped to a bean bag is like. Believe me.
Vile comment.
The western culture will never learn!
Be a parent but for career abandon them under someone else’s care!
It's not career it's just work to pay bills for most
@@helendancelot Baby's interests come before bills. If a woman wants to be a mother, she should put her maternal duties toward her baby's need for motherly bonding, wellbeing and safety first, and with that priority be willing to live within her means. There is also such a thing as Child Benefits payable to all mothers regardless of means.
If, for whatever reason, a woman is unable or unwilling to care for her own baby during the vital formative first year of its life she should delay motherhood by taking contraceptives or keeping her legs together.
Usual suspects
Sentencing announced. She got 14-years. Owners and senior management team are under scrutiny now too, as they should be!
I can’t believe that 11 babies under a year old were being looked after by two staff. The owners of the nursery are responsible too
Made me cry. Thoughts are with mom and dad
I was a nursery nurse in a baby unit I looked after every child as if it was my own where were the other staff to allow that if one of my colleagues had done that I would have something to say and would have got the child the whole nursery needs looking at
You are spot on. We have to question the practices at this nursery. Is this the first time a child has been at risk? The rot is often from the top. All staff should be under the spotlight. And closed down .
She looks like a threatening bully to me and with her being in a higher position I suspect the other feeble minded workers were afraid to confront her. Shame on them.
