I’m not very knowledgeable so take everything I say with a grain of salt. That being said I think it originated on a server Grian was on called EVO. I think the Watchers are supposed to represent the audience (?) but I think it evolved into them being god-like beings who feed on misery. I believe it was Martyn (if I remember correctly) who started to use them in his life series lore. Basically the Watchers are forcing the players into the life series so that they can feed. That’s pretty much all I know at the moment lol

They first showed up on EVO smp, and are god like beings that organized and watch over the life series to feed on the players suffering, also by the end of EVO grain gets taken by them and becomes a watcher So basically Minecraft chaos gods lol :3
@@Gedichtssgrian being a watcher is actually canon to martyn’s eyes and ears lore! Basically, Grian left EVO a bit earlier than everyone else so in the lore he made it that he got kidnapped by the watchers and forced to become one

For your second question I'm pretty sure Grian is in the life series to try and save his friends from the Watchers but he just isn't strong enough.
