This is brilliant! Love the Harry Potter exercise, I’m definitely going to use that. I feel like I get a free class with your channel, we should be paying you tuition!

Best compliment ever, thank you!! 😃 I LOVE teaching writing workshops and that's exactly what I wanted to do with this channel. I hope the exercise works for you! The mirror is probably my favorite object/plot device in the whole HP series.

Recently discovered this channel and loving the videos. Have a 40,000 word outline for my second book in a series and got stuck on a key scene in chapter 3 - realising I am more of a panser who loves plotting than I thought - it is the character motivation clarity that got me stuck, and these videos sure help! The character Wants/Needs were there but not foremost in my mind in order to 'land the outline plane on the runway' as it were. Thanks heaps for these videos!

I like how you mentioned the Characters needs. It was not something I had specifically thought about or identified in my character. It actually reminds me of Doctor Who in the episode where the T.A.R.D.I.S. becomes a real person. The Doctor is really irritated with her and complains that she never takes him where he wants to go. She tells him then that's because she has always taken him to where he NEEDS to go. I'm not sure if this is the same thing exactly but the thought is there.
    I found the quote:
    www.planetclaire.tv/quotes/doctorwho/series-six/the-doctors-wife/
The Doctor: You know, since we’re talking with mouths-not really an opportunity that comes along very often-I just want to say, you know you have never been very reliable.
    Idris: And you have?
The Doctor: You didn’t always take me where I wanted to go.
Idris: No, but I always took you where you needed to go.
    The Doctor: You did.

YESSS a fellow Whovian! :D That is SUCH an awesome example. Wow, I forgot how much I love that episode. And those quotes you linked really show how deep the connection is between the Doctor and the TARDIS. I love it. Thank you, Melody!

I love this, character arcs are my favorite part of books, so it's naturally been my favorite part of writing to learn about :)
The Harry Potter example was really interesting to me. I've never thought about the connection of his wants/needs to the physical objects. I don't feel like Harry's arc is actually very strong, but I appreciate it more after listening to your analysis.

Thank you so much!! I definitely see what you mean - he has a long way to grow over seven books. But I really do love how these magical objects represent his needs and wants. 😃

I love lists too! Carmen Maria Machado talks somewhat frequently about the ways that they influence her writing, and after hearing that and seeing it in her stories, I am low-key obsessed with spotting them in other writer's work. Another great video!

That's so cool! The universal appeal of lists is so interesting. I mean, you can see it all over the internet, including here on youtube - top ten worst/best list videos are always super popular. And I have to admit, I'm a sucker for non-fiction books that use the list format, too. (Also, thank you!!)
