As a life long tapper I thought Gregory Hines was very gracious and generous to a nebiw like Steve Martin. It also took tremendous balls for Steve to dance side by side with him!
Steve's dancing was great, but I know Hines went easy on him. I was kind of hoping for a moment when he just opens up and slays Martin, but he was a gracious man. No disrespect at all to Martin because he is obviously pretty good, but he "kept up" with Hines because Hines held back for him.
Kate Reaves ....yeah couldn't agree more ...a really beautiful (&talented) guy who kept his illness to himself in till almost the end..... A CLASS ACT ... 🌷
What an incredible find! I've seen so much of Steve Martin, but I've never seen this footage before. Gregory Hines is of course an absolute master, and of course he's technically the better dancer, but right back to The Jerk, there's something about Steve's dancing that has always, always brought me joy. You can tell he moves his feet in a fairly standard way for a tap dancer, but from the waist up there's just an uncontrollably joyous energy to how he moves that puts a smile on my face every time. It's something more than "laughter comedy." It's a shared happiness that runs very deep.
I love how there are several points while dancing that from the waist up Steve Martin's posture and motions are unmistakably his - to the point where you could cover his face and recognize him anyway.
Notice how Greg Hines' singing is just as rhythmic as his dancing. You can hear it as soon as he starts singing; listen to the 'bounce' he gives to the words, and notice that Steve does not do this. Truly motivated by rhythm!
I love this! By his own admission it took Steve Martin 6 months to learn how to tap dance for Pennies From Heaven and another 4 to film one of the great tap sequences. Pennies was a very unappreciatd 1981 movie - average audiences were not up to the task of understanding the clever, dark references and the Busby Berkley style dance numbers.
In fairness, it was not well received because it paled by comparison to the BBC original starring Bob Hoskins. It was too glitzy and missed the point of the Potter original.
😂Every time I see Gregory Hines dance on film I curse the cancer that took him from us so early. I watched him dance with his father and brother when the kids were children. His brother died recently, so there mist be some mighty dancing in heaven.
Thank you for sharing. I am a huge Gregory Hines fan. I was surprised and amazed at Steve Martin's dance and tap skills. He is far more than just a funny man as well. I knew he was talented, but never knew he could dance like that. I really enjoyed watching. Thanks again for sharing.
I also didn't know how well Steve could dance. I'm sure it would take me YEARS to even begin to approach such proficiency. He also is very talented on the banjo. The show business habit of type casting performers can certainly deprive entertainers of showcasing their multiple talents.
Gregory Hines!!! RIP! Such an amazing Man he was and actor! I remember when I was a kid and my Pops introduced me to Gregory Hines and the most memorable one I remember him was my favorite western comedy movie The Cherokee Kid. Bro was Memorizing to watch on screen, that face and the Roles he played He was such a Legend! Steve Martin still going strong along with Martin Short and Chevy Chase, all the Greats of Comedy! I wish we still had Gregory Hines and even Richard Prior! We lost them too soon I feel and they would appreciate the Modern Comedy styles from the comedians of today!
Just fantastic, Steve Martin is a modern day Danny Kaye...he's not just a great tapper but also has a real good voice. I wonder how he keeps in such good shape!
Frikken right on.... He's just one of those rare guys that can do anything he puts himself to.... and does it GREAT! I watched a 2008 movie "Traitor", gritty action thriller, and when I saw that it was written by Steve Martin, I basically said exactly what you said..."Is there anything he can't do?". I've realize that Comedians, when they are "good'... chances are, they can excel in serious roles too... seriously..:-) Kevin Pollak, Robin Williams, Jim Carrey, Seth Rogan, Jack Black, Wayons bros, Bill Murry, Jamie Foxx, Whoopie Goldberg... to name just a few
This was so much fun n 👏🏻. I have always loved Gregory Hines, he was so talented, a wonderful dancer, a gifted singer and a talented actor. A true triple threat❤️ Not to mention he was adorable. Thank you for sharing 👍🏻👍🏻Stay safe healthy and happy ✝️🇺🇸
This is wonderful! If anyone else has copies of Steve Martin's specials from the 70's and '80's please, please please put them up! I remember this special so well and cracked up when I heard that line again, "Hey, that's what I was gonna do!"
I knew Gregory Hines was a Great Dancer, was not aware he had passed! RIP Great Man! I am AMAZED at Steve Martins dancing ability whether it took him 6 months or 25 years simply doesn’t matter! Bravo! Bravo Gentlemen!
Just can't believe half of this duo has already been gone for sometime now. So, glad Steve is still sharing his talents. What an Act! Gregory Hines and Steve Martin! Always a favorite for me. Thanks for taping it! ♡
Dancers should be shown if full view not just the feet or the from the waist up. Good dancing and showmanship on both Greg and Steve. Thanks for the video. RIP Gregory Hines we still miss you.
Thank you for sharing this!! Steve Martin surely must have been dancing a little longer by that point, but he does seem a natural at anything requiring impeccable rhythm - music, dance, and comedy!
GregoryHines R.I.P. He was a fantastic dancer & I loved Steve Martin in " PENNIES FROM HEAVEN" He did some great dancing himself. This was the best dance Routine,? Since I saw James Cagney & Bob Hope dancing together in the Movie " THE SEVEN LITTLE FOYS"
This brings back some great memories. Not just Steve Martin and that white suit, but it was great to hear Don Pardo's voice again and see Howard Shore from the pre-Lord of the Rings days.
Steve Martin is such a surprise. And to think his fellow high school classmates at GGHS used to make fun of him for his comedy. When he became a hit in the 70s, some of these old classmates used to deride him and said (complete with eye rolls) that he used to do the same stuff back in high school. Well, look at what Steve Martin has accomplished… and may I ask what have *they* accomplished? Yep. Thought so.
We all knew that Gregory HInes could dance and sing. He grew up doing it all his life. One of my favorite performances with Gregory Hines was in the movie "Mad Dog Time" where he played Jules Flamingo, a really cool character--who dies too early. But to discover Steve Martin's dancing in "Pennies From Heaven" was both delightful and astounding. Apparently, he trained and trained, and learned tap and dance just in order to make that movie. That is real dedication to your craft, and put Steve Martin in a completely different light and place of respect for me. Love these guys.
Ya know, that is so true! I love him in all his different talents. But I had no idea he could tap like that. I've seen him dance and he did it well, but this... Fantastic.
Love this so much, fun routine. ❤️ Gregory Hines is perfect and Steve Martin was a good match, showed a lot more of what he can do. Wonderful entertainers.
I watched three amigos for the first time last week and while watching the my little buttercup scene I thought this reminds me of fit as a fiddle in singin in the rain and then this showed up in my feed.
mad props to Steve Martin for keeping up with Gregory Hines
Okaeeee!!!!
I Thank it's the other way around.
Steve looks natural effortless love it
Steve is not a newbe
@@erinfraise7661 If you say so.
What a treasure this is. I hope somebody somewhere is backing up.All these videos in a safe place because they are priceless.
I want Hines to be alive and have a recurring role as an Arconia resident on Season Four of Only Murders In The Building.
I so miss him.
God, I miss Gregory Hines sweet face.
Kate Reaves ....yeah couldn't agree more ...a really beautiful (&talented) guy who kept his illness to himself in till almost the end.....
A CLASS ACT ... 🌷
me too kate
I do as well. Such a loss.
I loved him! Running Scared is one of my all time fav movies. I watch it once a year.
Me too. So much.
Gregory Hines, legendary dancer.
Steve Martin, legendary all-rounder.
This is so damn good! 🤩👏
Good nod to Singing in the rain!
What an incredible find! I've seen so much of Steve Martin, but I've never seen this footage before. If Steve is ever casted on Dancing With the Stars that season would be over with
I love how there are several points while dancing that from the waist up Steve Martin's posture and motions are unmistakably his - to the point where you could cover his face and recognize him anyway.
No one moves like Steve Martin
Wild and crazy guy! What show was this
For sure!!!
Notice how Greg Hines' singing is just as rhythmic as his dancing. You can hear it as soon as he starts singing; listen to the 'bounce' he gives to the words, and notice that Steve does not do this. Truly motivated by rhythm!
That's cuz Greg is black. However, Steve was born a poor black child.
Love Gregory Hines. He is missed
Boy this is fantastic! I wish they could restore it but still marvelous to see 🤩
I miss those musical movies...
💖🇺🇲👍🏻😊
Gregory Hines , one of the GREAT entertainers!
who knew steve could tap? lucky to dance with gregory.
Gregory Hines is so classy in this clip. As the superior dancer - 33years to Martin 8 months - he took the high road and let Steve Martin shine.
In fairness, it was not well received because it paled by comparison to the BBC original starring Bob Hoskins. It was too glitzy and missed the point of the Potter original.
all you ever need to know, is that one time... this happened
😂Every time I see Gregory Hines dance on film I curse the cancer that took him from us so early. I watched him dance with his father and brother when the kids were children. His brother died recently, so there mist be some mighty dancing in heaven.
Every time that you hear thunder with lightning, it’s them. Dance in peace…..
Today audience could not respectfully enjoy entertainment like this
This is simply amazing! Gregory Hines is unparalleled, but Steve keeps up with him very well.
Wow, didn't know Steve was that good.
I know, it surprised me...
I know! Right!!! He could really yodel, too!
Steve Martin is much more than he seems.
For real!!!
LOVE how they do sing, have a KILLER dance break, then belt it out after all that dancin! True performers!!!!
Steve underrated dancer singer actor
where has all the sweet hardworking talent gone? Now THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT!

Yes and just to think Gregory Hines is a better singer and dancer than either of them.
I think that Steve Martin is possibly the most talented man entertainer that has ever lived. Is there anything he can't do?
Frikken right on.... He's just one of those rare guys that can do anything he puts himself to.... and does it GREAT! Sammy Davis Jr. was the same
This was so much fun n 👏🏻.

There are no performers with this must talent anymore.
Sum this performance up in 3 words! Classic, Priceless,Timeless. RIP Gregory Hines
THERE WAS NO ONE BETTER THAN GREGORY….THE CLASS OF CARY GRANT AND THE DANCING OF ASTAIRE AND KELLY COMBINED….JUST LOVED HIM💕💕💕
Damn, they are amazing!
Gregory Hines - a huge talent gone for ever. Always knew Steve Martin must be a dancer because he moves so well on film
Dripping in multi-talent. Legends on screen. Appreciate them while we have them.
Steve has been dancing for more than 8 months. That was obviously a fib. These guys are natural dancers. They are both so talented.
Steve can dance! This isn't just an attempt at!
Gregory Hines tap dancing is (oh, fan myself and think) my almost favorite thing. I will sit here and watch and dream.
Both of these guys are amazing. Gregory Hines may have been the last of the great tap dancers and Martin moves so strangely that it's excellent!
Gregory Hines was such an amazing talent -- gone way too soon.
WOW!!!
i did not know that Steve Martin had moves like that! haha i am in complete and utter shock!! go martin!! :D
Steve Martin really ROCKED that time step.
He's got happy feet!

I knew Gregory Hines was a Great Dancer, was not aware he had passed! RIP Great Man! I am AMAZED at Steve Martins dancing ability whether it took him 6 months or 25 years simply doesn’t matter! Bravo! Bravo Gentlemen!
Steve Martin did a nice job. This was back when people on TV and in movies had talent!
That was just plain fun to watch. They were both amazing, dancing AND singing.
Just can't believe half of this duo has already been gone for sometime now. So, glad Steve is still sharing his talents. What an Act! Gregory Hines and Steve Martin! Always a favorite for me. Thanks for taping it! ♡
Awesome, I love watching Gregory Hines tap. Steve Martin was great.
God, I’m so glad this popped up on my feed today! Pure joy!!
Martin was taking his training seriously. Whoa

Never knew steve martin could dance. Lovely
OMG!!! They were in perfect sync too!!
Gregory Hines is great and Steve Martin did great. Thank you for this. Made me remember dancing on TV in my youth. I was never close to this.
Steve Martin is such a surprise. And to think his fellow high school classmates at GGHS used to make fun of him for his comedy. Steve Martin is awesome! Didn't know he is such a good dancer. I remember this song, it was in "singin' in the rain"
Steve is awsome I bet he can still do it :D
I have this on VHS somewhere. Thanks for posting it!
Love this so much, fun routine. ❤️ Gregory Hines is perfect and Steve Martin was a good match, showed a lot more of what he can do. Wonderful entertainers.

Wow...brings back memories. Thanks so much for posting this.
Omg this was so awesome to see! Tap is so fun looking! More people should do it...
I watched three amigos for the first time last week and while watching the my little buttercup scene I thought this reminds me of fit as a fiddle in singin in the rain and then this showed up in my feed.
