- On the eve of the 2017 Galway Festival, Mick Fitzgerald heads to Youghal, County Cork, to speak in depth with one of the most charismatic members of the weighing room either side of the Irish Sea - the much-loved Davy Russell.
Happy and content with his young family and riding at the top of his game, Davy Russell shows us behind the scenes at home - including the nearby beach at Youghal where his riding journey began - and goes through the highs and lows of a highly decorated career in the saddle.
From making his name in local point-to-points to taking the plunge and heading to the yard of Ferdy Murphy in the north of England as a youngster, Russell recounts his formative days before his big break in 2007 and the link-up with the Irish National Hunt racing's rising power, Michael O'Leary's Gigginstown House Stud.
From the numerous Grade 1 winners in the role to the highly-publicised split - as well as taking us inside the rider's mind for the winning Cheltenham Gold Cup ride aboard Lord Windermere in 2014 - Davy recounts all that's gone and hints at what is to come in a fascinating interview. Most imminently, the special charms and the unique test of the Galway Festival...

Davy by getting the sack was very public. Even some radio stations who only refer to horses when Cheltenham came, brought it up on their programmes. One in particular was Last Word on today Fm. Credit to Russell, it took it with grace. Low and behold Gigginstown had to come calling when their new boy got injured, and won Group 1 on Clarcam.
He is a class jockey and a class man.

@Ger Maher I can appreciate that biology classes are few and far between in horse bullying school, but we are all animals. And yes, before you ask any more simpleton questions, I do breathe and I do use my eyes to see. What I don't do is bully horses by punching them in the face. Do you?

I commented on this before the incident and i'm not going to get in a debate with you about how good of a pilot of a horse he is. But, you cannot excuse what he did, the ban was to short, and the camera doesn't lie.
And no wizardry, just a stupid thing, not making an excuse, but we've all done things that we're not proud of, and I hope he feels like a pile of shit, but I doubt it unfortunately.
Will I support him, yes, because if he is on something that I feel has a good chance, I will back the HORSE. But as a big fan of Davy Russell, I feel extremely let down. But prior to this incident, Davy's been riding very well, and ofcourse I'll support him, but this incident pisses me off just as much as it has pissed you off.
Watch Sean Leveys punch at Kempton, they deserve to be put in the spotlight and reprimanded, its on UA-cam.
I hear you Dan and I have seen Sean Levey's punch too. I thank you for your honesty, however having crossed the line in public it is hard to believe that they both don't do worse behind closed doors. I personally think they should both be banned from being near animals for life.

Vegan Radio You are a fucking goon 😂😂 A horse is a very strong and tough animal. A slap of a whip would probaly bother the horse more so than a tap to the head. He had to make the horse behave himself otherwise the horse could have flipped him over the fence and could have seriously hurt him.
So Lee on the one hand you are saying _'a tap to the head'_ wouldn't bother the horse whilst on the other hand you are saying the same _'tap'_ made _'the horse behave himself'_ . Which is it Lee? Either it was violent enough to cause the horse to not _'have flipped him over the fence'_ or it was not.
A great interview , seems like a very genuine down to earth person .
The jury is still out though on whether he rides horses on their merits all the time

Secondly you should give Ruby Walsh a few tips on how to be a class act because you are streets ahead of him long may it continue for you

Mac Coy 85 Grade 1 wins, Careless walsh 185 Grade 1 wins. Q. What does that Stat tell you if u have any brains? Mac coy wasn't on top top horses like over rated walsh was. Mac coy had to ride THOUSANDS of donkeys. While walsh was sitting on the cream of N.H. horses.

Great fellow, great heart (Cork born ). D.H. won the €250,000 Galway Plate (chase) yesterday wed. 2 aug. '17. I always liked him, Paul C., and Puppy Power. I don't like walsh lost on ANNIE POWER and a Champion Hur. Hurricane. walsh cost my best friend a win as a trainer. Big head big mouth walsh "thought" he knew how to ride the race no listen to little trainer "2nd" like last in a horse race. So we get medium rated jockeys now. That Do as yhey are told" sit up in the first 4 at D.p.
