Once again, excellent analysis, Jess, thanks so much! The biggest compliment I can give you is that you make me appreciate my own music so much more. I really had goosebumps several times seeing your genuine emotional reactions and hearing your interesting comments. Your own vibrato is amazing by the way. Please keep up the good work!
I agree sir. And reactors are what makes the looooong period where we cant enjoy music with others as we were used to bearable, they are showing their enjoyment of the music we love (and even showing us even more things to love about it). I also wanted to say I really appreciate the new track, its awesome. It, and the wonderful teases I get from your Facebook, are making me very much hyped for the rest!
It’s always a pleasure doing a performance analysis on your work. They’re truly masterpieces! Thank you always for the kindest of words. I look forward to doing more videos in the future and keep up the great work as well!
Note that 'Twisted Coil' is actually a track from a different Arjen Lucassen project called 'Guilt Machine', not strictly Ayreon. This was part of the "and Other Tales" of Into The Electric Castle Live.
This is only the second reaction/analysis video of yours I've watched - and I've watched lots of other reaction videos to Ayreon songs - and I think your videos are easily my favorites. I really like your observations and insights and the obvious passion you have for music. Great video!
Damian Wilson must have the most consistent microphone handling ever. I know know nothing about singing, but I know physics. He is so specific and precise in adjusting the distance and angle of the microphone from his mouth. He has this butter smooth voice, but the microphone handling must play a large part in why his volume levels are also smooth and controlled too, and why there are no unwanted noises and pops disrupting the butterness. I bet that he does not even think about the microphone anymore, the physical position is just a part of the note that he wants to sing. I have seen many singers make adjustments especially on loud high notes, but no one this precise and specific.
Yeah when he moves the mic to the sides its to avoid the pops and when he pushes the mic back he does that to not overload the mic and the sound to come bad
Yes please! I keep checking regularly if anybody is reacting to that particular song. It's one of my favourite Ayreon songs and the live version is just stellar!
Damians voice just gives me full body goosebumps in this song. His full power high notes at the end are insane. I believe its just a half step lower than Floors floorgasm note in GLS. I mean, look at him, who would ever think that could come out of him? You know you did well when the crowd chants your name after you sing, and he was filling in for the original singer, its not even his song!
1. I was there. It was one of my top 3 concert experiences (hint: #1 was another Ayreon concert). 2. Arjen is a fantastic composer. He's meticulous as hell, and it is reflected in the final product. 3. Damien is a beautiful singer, and a really nice guy. 4. I really appreciate your reaction. It was detailed, and covered not just the vocals, but also the composition. Very nice. I'll watch more of your stuff.
It doesn't matter if I like more or less the artist you analyze, your videos are always a real pearl full of details that can't be found anywhere else. I can't thank you enough for all the effort you put into making your videos more detailed every day and the amount of information you give us in them. A big hug, you know that in Spain you have a faithful follower.
I know this is a little late Jessica, but I wanted to add to your drum sound comment. Ed the drummer is using lightening rod sticks instead of solid drum sticks. They are a collection of multiple thin wooden dowells/sticks bound together but with a small degree of flexible movement. They soften the attack or blow on the drum skin and having played next to them, also lead to a lengthened decay or sustained drum sound, at least to my ears. The tom drum sound here sounds a little conga-like which I think good quality toms tend to do. Anyhow enough rambling, I adore your enthusiasm and your contributions. Hancrafty7
Damien Wilson is an amazing vocalist and I was blown away when I saw him perform live in Ayreon Universe and Electric Castle Live. The album this track is from is fantastic too as a whole. You should give it a listen and a read up. Great and very deep lyrics by Lori Linstruth.
The main singer is Damian Wilson, he is a beast! He also sings "And The Druids Turn To Stone", another great performance that you can analyze too! From "Ayreon Universe" live show!
YES! My suggestion from the last Ayreon video made it :) Thank you for your hard work and analysis and glad you enjoyed it ... Damian is just fantastic live and being in that concert, experiencing that song, was one of the best days ever. :) Ok, next suggestion from Ayreon? "Into the Black Hole" Live, with Tommy Karevik on main vocals and Marcella Bovio, Irene Jansen and Lisette van den Berg on backing vocals ... or should I say the BEST backing vocals? hehehe, you'll see/hear
Hey Jess, I hope you're doing well. The combination of the rhythic bass line and the "vocal/musical resolutions in odd directions" (often minor-to-major, not resolving into the key I would expect) reminds of a musical phenomena called a Shepards filter, which gives a constant/perpetual rising or falling affect in the music by very clever manipulation of a LFO on a phaser or flanger. Now, now of this is being employed in this song, but the constant tension/resolution yields a similar feel, to me. Cello playing the funk 'bass filter' line. Stevie Wonder would be proud of this band. The envelope filter isn't heard often enough, and attacking the amplitude-sensitive filter with a cello-bow is, literally, a stroke of genius. Drums playing softly - this is Ed Warby at his best... no one matches their playing to the needs of the song better than Mr Warby does. The world needs more percussionists like Ed Warby. I don't know if height has anything to do with amazing voices, but Damon Wilson is about 6foot5 and he looks like he lifts double-malt-scotch aging casks for a living... those arms don't come from lifting a microphone. Jess, I love our videos and analysis. You educate me, and I appreciate that. I hadn't picked out the tri-tone, but I should have recognized it by the discomfort it was causing. Props to Arjen for making such good use of it in the song. Have you formed that metal band yet?...
From this same Electric Castle concert, you HAVE to hear the exquisite voice of Marcela Bovio (center female in the chorus) doing the short, high energy Stream of Passion song, "Out in the Real World". Stream of Passion was a band that Arjen created with Marcela that featured, as is frequently the case, several Ayreon regulars.
Yes, Dianne van Giersbergen in the backing vocals. Please react on her song Nightfall of her ex band Xandria. Also her projects in Ex Libris ( Ann Boleyn) are great. Underrated Singer. So good. Greetings from the Netherlands.
I love Arjen's creations. They are so complex and theatrical in nature. Loved you analysis Jess. Yes, he is part of the backing singers as well. It is so cool to see and hear progressive metal presented in this type of format. Like a Broadway metal play.
If I am not mistaken the singers are: Damian Wilson (Headspace, Maiden uniteD, ex-Threshold) - Knight Marcela Bovio (ex-Stream of Passion, Mayan) - Backing vocals Dianne van Giersbergen (Ex Libris, ex-Xandria) - Backing vocals Jan Willem Ketelaers - Backing vocals
Finally someone has watched and appreciated (I knew you would) this song with Damian Wilson singing. He’s an absolute legend, great guy if you ever get chance to meet him and his career is varied and interesting. From Threshold, Ayreon and Star One (both Arjen Lucassen works), his solo career with acoustic guitar, strings and quite folky to the fact that he played Jean Val Jean in London for a year. What a dude!
This is by far the best analysis and reaction I’ve seen for Ayreon’s music. I really appreciate not just the detail you get into, but how you pull clips to portray the comments you make along the way. :)

Returned back for another view. Tonight was a "Treat Night", treating myself to the opinions of a number of reactors v this song. I'm so glad I saved yours for last. My good lady : you are so, So, SO perceptive, and can explain those pieces you find in such a clear and concise manner. It is a pleasure to listen to you discuss music.

THE story telling, guys! Wow! They take you right into their world, right to where they want us to be… I LOVE that!!! There’re so great! So good!!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 Thank you, Jess! Amazing reaction as always! 💪🏼👍🏼
This is one of my favorite songs created by Arjen. Maybe strange but i get emotional every time listening to Damian. He is from another planet. Arjen is my all time composer and writer. Too bad you never hear his music on the radio or see his opera's on television. You only hear music that sells, so money money money rules the tv and radio stations, not music. Dear Jess, please check out "Everybody dies" live, by Ayreon. You will be amazed. Proud to be a Dutchie.
What a perfect performance to illustrate how small a difference there actually is between "standard" opera and so called "symphonic" Metal. (And yes I like both...) ;)
Great reaction video. Not my favorite of Arjen‘s projects to be honest. But you made me appreciate it a bit more. Damian is such an amazing singer: very precise, lot of soul. Very underrated. Another song I really enjoy is As the Druids turned to Stone from the Ayreon Universe show. Thx for the video 🙏

You've already been given the Druids song & Damian's own bands, so I'll add he's done Valjean in Les Mis and you can find notably several Bring Him Home of his here on youtube, that showcase his control and technique very well, it's a treat!

Good mic technique is very under-rated. One of the greatest power singers ever is Australia's John Farnham. His mic technique is superb.
Such a great live concert.
