Thanks for reviewing alternative lenses for Sony FE cameras. It's great to see brands like Yongyuo, Viltrox, Samyang and others catch up to Sony, Sigma and Tamron image quality but at a more affordable price point for budget conscious photographers/videographers. Sharpness is definitely important to me and I do use DXO scores as reference prior to buying a new lens. Not many, if any, UA-cam camera reviewers reference DXO enough so props to you for being one of the first or few who does.
When you're buying new lenses, just remember people; ''Sharpest'' does not mean ''best image quality.'' All these lens characteristics like sharpness, CA and so on, don't mean anything when it comes to overall image quality of a lens. Hasselblad for example has been making the best lenses in the entire market for over 150 years now and their lenses were never ''the sharpest!'' or had the ''best CA performance!'' and yet the image quality of photos taken with their cameras and lenses was always unmatched for not decades but almost two centuries... CENTURIES! Consumer grade manufacturers are chasing ''sharpness'' and ''eye af'' and other nonsense, while manufacturers like Hasselblad, Phase One, Angenieux, Cooke, Panavision, Leica, Zeiss and so on and so forth, have never had supreme sharpness lenses and yet their lenses always had legendary status image quality, well above the consumer grade manufacturers. Don't get fooled by marketing nonsense and buy quality products if you want your images to actually look good and not just be sharp.
I'm super new and bought their lenses, only due to not wanting to jump in the deep end before I learned what I was doing. Good to know they are great for the money.
The lens is on my wish-list and I been seeing mixed reviews about this lens. I am Nikon Z camera. The other reviews was from 3 years ago from Christopher Frost.
Hello Mark , I just bought this lens because of your video about how sharp the lens is . I have their 16mm f1.8 and it is really sharp . This lens cost $369 on AMAZON but I bought it here in one of the famous Asian E-commerce platform for only $240 . It is quite a huge discount on this updated version. I'm happy , thanks mark ☺️.. I'm currently on vacation here ..
Super cool that you shared the shy part. I share your non-traditional approach to street photography, sometimes shooting w 200mm! Thanks for your videos - they really are excellent and quite polished. One shiny bit of polish you could add is saying "Youngnou sent the lens to me" instead of "Youngnow sent the lens to myself". Myself is the reflexive, meaning you have to have started the sentence with the word "I". I gave this lens to myself because I am a good person. She gave this lens to herself. Thanks again for your contribution, Mark!
Thanks Mark! I have this lens but version 1 (the more plastic with red ring), sharpness was always very good on it, but the autofocus was a pain…, however you mention (and I totally forgot) that there was a firmware update so I rushed to computer and updated…Wow it’s like I got a new lens. Autofocus is now quite good, much better than before. Almost a Christmas present! 🎉

Quick question, as a third party lens how does it do in terms of being able to maximize and express all of Sony's smart features like autofocusing, continuous tracking and so on?

Hi Mark! Great video as always. I'm a beginner photographer, just bought my first camera (Lumix GX9) a year ago. I'm using it with Sigma 56mm f1.4 which on micro four thirds equal to 112mm focal length. I'm also using it for street photography and this combo delivers great results as to my taste.
there's one thing that these lens will not have and that's 3D pop, but then again very expensive sony lens don't have it and people still love the results so... amazing lens, thanks for sharing the knowledge!
Sonys GM line of lenses was literally invented because of Zeiss and most GM lenses were made by zeiss manufacturing standards, that sony legally stole from zeiss when they were under the partnership contract, which expired in 2019. thats why you wont see any more zeiss lenses for sony and probably for any camera ever again. all sonys fault. anyway, that said, most sony GM lenses have the ''3d pop'' or whatever you want to call that look, including all of the ZA lenses and even some cheaper lenses like the 2016 version of the 50mm 1.8 and the newest version of the 35mm 1.8.
@@nogerboher5266 no, they don’t, because the industry moved towards removing geometric and chromatic aberrations as a main focus. What this does is add changes to coatings and the number of elements used. The more glass, the worse the signal to noise ratio is going to be for the sensor. This does two things: lowers micro contrast and also flattens the image, the depth is not there anymore. PS: yes I do hate sony for what they did.
@@maggnet4829 it really depends on the lens resolve power and its capacity to absorb light. Yeah, you get more by doing that but there's a hard cap to each lens.
The 90mm Macro it is slow to find focus, when u go far and close, but if u set the distance mark in lens and use adequaly you will have no problem, and the optics is SOOOOOOOO nice. I work with it in the film company, and it's amazing.
@@Pontcher It is sharp and good "When" you get it in focus... But in my opinion, and I did beauty work for over 20 years, it was frustrating to use and I sold it.. I can see if you are on a tripod and do not move at all it might work well. But for anything else it was not for me..
I love my 90mm macro lens. Autofocus is not an issue for me in photography specially portraits with good light (specially when you use focus limiter). I actually want to get one 85 1.8 to make my gear lighter/compact, but it's hard for me to replace this macro lens as most of the time it the only one attached to my cam. Reason- with this we always have the option to go close or use it as a macro lens.
Great job on the video Mark! Thanks for making it. I was about to go do some house work, but then I saw that you had posted this so I had to put those chores on hold. Darn.
Can you please make a video on a comparison between Sony 11 mm and sigma 16mm with A6700. Basically while vlogging how will the active stab crops both of them and is it usable. Thank you in advance.
Wow interesting, thanks for the insight ! I might actually get this and replace my Tokina 85/1.8 which hangs the A74 now and again, I'm too lazy to send the lens for a firmware update. The Tokina is more or less identical to the Viltrox. The Yongnuo is actually cheaper than the Viltrox in China.

Have you had any problems with it jumping out of AF when shooting stills? I have to unmount and remount lens to get it to work again. Unsure if this is something that can be fixed with a software update or not.
I live in Germany and it looks like its hard to find exactly this model. I only find the one with the red strip and one without it, but still with YNlens print on it. Is it very new?
Yes, looks like the metal one is sold out everywhere. The one with the red ring is the same lens, but isn’t in a metal body. but it will perform the same optically.
I was super excited to receive my lens, but I can’t seem to update this thing. I downloaded the firmware from their site, but the program didn’t recognize the lens being plugged in so it doesn’t update
What is the central resolution and corner resolution in lines per millimeter? Can you actually measure this as it was done by popular photography magazine? If so how, since I used to be able to do this to compare individual lenses in any make or model?
Hey Mark, I currently have the ZV-E10 and am hoping to upgrade to the a6700. Do you think this lens would be a better option for my camera over the Sigma 56mm or Viltrox 72mm lenses? I’m hoping to do more portrait photography this year
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis Thank you for the great video again! Viltrox 75 is almost twice the price of Yongnuo. Is the difference compared to Sigma (and Yognuo) justifiable? Oh, also, as there is a chance you will read it, thank you for making me buy four lenses already this year, heh. Cheers.

Perhaps I need to check this out, could make a really great macro on my APSC Sony a6600, the sharpest lens I have ever seen is my Sigma 56mm man that's so sharp.
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis Thanks for your response. The aluminum body is quite interesting. I may wait until it is available. Are this Yongnuo lenses and the Viltrox version comparable?
When you started the video I thought you might be talking about my favorite high value 85mm f1.8, the LUMIX. I’m curious how this compares. I use the less common L mount system so the lens you’re fearing isn’t an option for me (sigma fp L camera)
Hey mark! i love your videos and i got a ZV-E10 because of you, super happy with it, but i recently have been getting into street photography and i want something better than the kit lens. Im a college student so im on a really tight budget (preferably under 200£) im hoping to get something on black friday, what do you recommend? thanks a million in advance!
Need help!!!! I have a canon EOS M50 and this lens doesn’t fit on my current adapter mount what mount works for this lens? Yes I don’t know much about cameras
I bought the 85mm YN, the first gen. It was awesome! But when I put it on my A9iii, it having some issues like couldn’t use continuous shot, it stuck, in video mode too.. but after upgrading to their newest firmware, IT WORKS SO GREAT! I used it for indoor sports arena at 1.8, and I think this was my favorite lens, beautiful bokeh, smooth autofocus(also fast). 🥹🥹 and it’s cheap. Hahaha
Wow! I’m a video shooter primarily for UA-cam, and despite having a Sony ZV-E1, I know it’s a capable camera, yes no EVF; but for some simple photos of my kids I’ve loosely thought about a reasonably priced portrait lens and this may be just that! Tried a 50mm 1.8 but 85mm 1.8 would be better! I’ve got the 16-35 F4 PZ from Sony. This could be a powerful little combo!
100mm /105 mm is the best for portraits and my favorite focal length. I really wish there was more e mount options in that range. Besides the sigma 105 f1.4. There not much else
Imho DxO test way to few lenses - e.g. where's the test of the Sigma 85mm f1.4 DG DN for L Mount and Sony? They only have a test for the old HSM DSLR version..
yes - the don’t have a complete catalog for sure, but hearing this lens tested so well (and better than the two 85 from Sony) that was enough for me to want to check it out
Tom Colton on here on youtube did an extensive comparison of the various brands of 85 1.8 on the Sony E mount, the short story is, the competition for best 85 1.8 were between Sony, Viltrox, Tokina, and Yongnuo at the bottom because of the af issues. I decided to get the Tokina because it autofocus on par with Sony an no autofocus issues at all, was actually a tad sharper than Sony, and at 350 USD, it was a bargain.
There are 2 versions for Canon yn85mm-f1-8r-df-dsm-ii and 85F1.8R DF DSM anyone knowing the difference. mark II is more expensive .As far as I see lens coating different? mark1 has greenish glare?
Hey Mark. I know there's a price difference between this lens and the Viltrox 75mm that you raved about. Which would you say is better? I'm using an A6700.
Hey Mark. I wound up getting the Yongnuo because I’m considering buying a full frame next year and there were only 2 left on Amazon when your video aired. I got it Friday evening and it really is a great lens for the price. It wound up being on sale here in the US for around $295. Thanks for letting us know about it because I would have never tried a lens like this. The price would have actually been a deterrent for me as I would have assumed it was that price for a reason. For everyone else looking for an 85mm, if you see this in stock, buy it. It’s definitely worth it.
Mark, seeing your video and i think you are not just good but Great! . I think there are alot of them also quite good in presentation but I think you are best in term of expression and lively to watch throughout to the end of video.
I bought this to use with my sony zv-e10. But it has some errors that say cannot use with RAW or RAW + JPEG. It can only be use in JPEG only. Am i right or something wrong? I'm still learning apsc btw.
Mark, love this video once again. I appreciate all the content you put out. Btw, on a totally unrelated lens, what do you think is a good alternative to eh 16-55 f2.8 sony aps-c lens? Thanks in advance
Is this going to retire your Sigma 56mm f1.4 lens for street photography? I recently used the 85mm Sony lens (on my a6700) you held up at a Jefferson Starship concert at Yaamava Casino in San Bernardino, where it only snows in the mountains. It was not wide enough nor long enough. Wish there was a medium middle of the road zoom, about 50 to 100mm at f1.8. And this is where I get off on the A7CR as the magic camera. If I had that FF body, I could have gotten the whole scene and been able to zoom in via cropping. After what you said about the A7CR, I realized it is the Magic Camera. Nothing like it, except the A7R5.
Great! Another lens on my purchase list. Hey Mark, can I come crash in your studio when I get kicked out for buying too much Camera gear? LOL! Another great video bud!
Its more affordable than the Viltroxx 75mm 1.2 and you highly recommend it for portraits. Do we have a new king or is the Yongnuo just the prince we didnt know about? 👀
In your real life, you are... unreal! Don't try to come away with this "I'm in Canada here". When you and Russians say so, much information do we get of your whereabouts indeed! Precisely somewhere between Newfoundland and Vancouver😂... Of course I am not comparing you to the top professionals in this branch but just a minor point - to me, apart from all that you mention, each lens (and surely the better ones) has a specific character. The first difference I noticed on your excellent portrait comparison is the better color of Yongnuo. Color rendition is one of the most important aspects of any lens (to me at least). Keep up your good work! Happy New Year

It looks like Sony SEL 50mm f1.8 oss lens for APSC series. Just bigger. The result seems similar though :P
it does look like that!!
Perhaps I need to check this out, could make a really great macro on my APSC Sony a6600, the sharpest lens I have ever seen is my Sigma 56mm man that's so sharp.
the 56 is so great and so sharp
Hey Mark. interesting video. Great info. Thanks. Amazon Canada has an 85mm with a red ring, released in 2020. Is it the same lens or a newer version?
It’s the same lens inside, but they have updated the 2020 lens with a new aluminum body. It will perform the same optically.
I use the less common L mount system so the lens you’re fearing isn’t an option for me (sigma fp L camera)
that Lumix 85 is a good lens
you should do a review on their 50 and 35 !
Thx for the review Mark. Need your honest opinion, price aside, which is better, this or the viltrox 75mm f1.2?
For APS-C I would choose the viltrox - can't beat that 1.2!!
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis thx for the clarity man, after confusing/poisoning me once again with another lens hahaha. Add to cart viltrox then!
Wonder if there's different versions of this lens...i see some for sale but on the side says YNlens....has a different logo
That’s the version (The YN) without the metal build. Optically it should perform the same
Not available at the Amazon link
Looks like its sold out there - try this one bhpho.to/3MWQxYu
Cheers so much Mark 😊
I will look into it whenever I upgrade or if I ever upgrade to full frame ❤
What about their 50mm full frame lens for Sony?
I am new to photography and I have the Viltrox 75mm. Would you add the 85 mm lens to my kit
No 😀
Hhello Mark very very intresting your review on the lens. I am in Canada would appreciate to get info. on where to buy it Thanks
Mark, what lens is the 85mm equivalent for a Canon rebel T6?
Around a 55 or 56. (55 X 1.6 = 88)
Hey mark! i love your videos and i got a ZV-E10 because of you, super happy with it, but i recently have been getting into street photography and i want something better than the kit lens.
Im a college student so im on a really tight budget (preferably under 200£) im hoping to get something on black friday, what do you recommend? thanks a million in advance!
for street photography, you can get the Sigma 30mm 1.4 amzn.to/47sz9mW or the Sony 50mm 1.8 amzn.to/47rmxMC
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis thanks! will both of these work on the zve10?
yes. even though the 50 is a full frame - it will act p as a 50 apsc lens on your zv-e10. the sigma 30 is a regular apsc lens
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis thank you :)
Need help!!!! I have a canon EOS M50 and this lens doesn’t fit on my current adapter mount what mount works for this lens? Yes I don’t know much about cameras
You probably bought the e mount version that fits on Sony. You won’t be able to use this lens on the canon m50.
So, it means that I don't need adapter when I want to use it on a6400?
yes, sony mount is available.
100mm /105 mm is the best for portraits and my favorite focal length. I really wish there was more e mount options in that range. Besides the sigma 105 f1.4. There not much else
Thank you so much for this recommendation , I love your videos !!!!!!!!!
Martin from Montreal
Hopefully you can find one in stock!!
Imho DxO test way to few lenses - e.g. where's the test of the Sigma 85mm f1.4 DG DN for L Mount and Sony? They only have a test for the old HSM DSLR version..
yes - the don’t have a complete catalog for sure, but hearing this lens tested so well (and better than the two 85 from Sony) that was enough for me to want to check it out
Wow already says unavailable. I assume it’s already sold out. Hopefully it come back soon. I want one for sure.
yongnuo says there will be more in 2 weeks.
Does it need a converter with sony zv e10?
no - it's a full frame lens and it will work just fine on your ZV-E10
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis love your channel btw! #thumbsup
I bought this lens because this video. Your convincing power is sure legit! 😄
It’s a great lens for the price. Let me know how you like it!!
Can I use this lens on my canon r50
Is this lens available for Sony and Nikon only?
yes
Tom Colton on here on youtube did an extensive comparison of the various brands of 85 1.8 on the Sony E mount, the short story is, the competition for best 85 1.8 were between Sony, Viltrox, Tokina, and Yongnuo at the bottom because of the af issues. I decided to get the Tokina because it autofocus on par with Sony an no autofocus issues at all, was actually a tad sharper than Sony, and at 350 USD, it was a bargain.
there have been a lot of updates to the Yongnuo so it's autofocus works great now - I haven't tested the Tokina - I should get one in!!
At this point, I'm just buying what Mark tells me to buy, basically. ❤
There are 2 versions for Canon yn85mm-f1-8r-df-dsm-ii and 85F1.8R DF DSM anyone knowing the difference. mark II is more expensive .As far as I see lens coating different? mark1 has greenish glare?
mark 2 has faster auto focus response and weather sealing.
Thanks for the review! I will buy it today! :)
I want to buy 85mm lens but my cam sony zv e10 doesnt have IBIS / internal stabilizer. Is it okey to use 85mm lens non oss? Thanks for your advice
For photos - you will be ok - just make sure to keep your shutter speed higher enough. Do a shutter speed is 1/200 at least.
4th☝🏻🤓 Got a Zv-E10 a week ago thanks to your channel. Really enjoying it so far.
Great to hear!!
@markbennettcameracrisis how's this lens for manual focus?
Nice review. Was looking for a tele for my a6400 and my first choice was the Viltrox 75 1.2. I hope you can compare this with the Viltrox 85 Mk II
The viltrox is vastly superior in every regard.
this is much faster in focusing than the viltrox 85mm
Hey Mark. I know there's a price difference between this lens and the Viltrox 75mm that you raved about. Which would you say is better? I'm using an A6700.
I would get the Viltrox because on APSC - you get that 1.2 instead of the 1.8.
thanks@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis
Isn't there an EF mount version for Canon also?
not the ef mount sorry. They made one for the R-Mount, but I don’t think that will work anymore
Mark, seeing your video and i think you are not just good but Great! . I think there are alot of them also quite good in presentation but I think you are best in term of expression and lively to watch throughout to the end of video.
Thanks!! That means a lot to me.
I have finally bought a little dougie!! Thank you mate 😊👊🏼
congrats!,
I bought this to use with my sony zv-e10. But it has some errors that say cannot use with RAW or RAW + JPEG. It can only be use in JPEG only. Am i right or something wrong? I'm still learning apsc btw.
you cannot use the zoom rocker with raw - which is probably the error your seeing. This its a prime lens - so you don't use it like a zoom lens
yongnuo 85 or 7artisan 85??? which one you think is better?
yongnuo 85mm, faster auto focus
Is it available in Nikon F mount?
z mount only
Mark, love this video once again. I appreciate all the content you put out. Btw, on a totally unrelated lens, what do you think is a good alternative to eh 16-55 f2.8 sony aps-c lens? Thanks in advance
The sigma 18-50 is an excellent alternative. the Tamron 17-70 is also great if you need more reach. but it’s a bigger lens
For street apsc - I’m mostly using the viktrox 75 right now
приятель в описании ошибка, у тебя написано 95 мм
Fixed - thanks!!
It has 'good chromatic aberration'?
I need one!
they’re all sold out, Mark!! All Sold out!!
The Yongnuo 85mm is AUD$450; got a Sony 85mm for $320 here on Australia.
Well I think you made the right choice in stat circumstance!!
i love their 50 1.8 and 35f2 also. those are the lenses i started with as a photographer. speedboosted on my sony apsc bodies ❤❤👍👍
How does it perform on a 61mp sensor?
It did great on my 33mp A7IV but DXO MArk did all their tests on the A7RIV - so it performs great at high mp
how do you compare this to the viltrox 85mm f1.8 II?
I actually haven't reviewed that one - I will try and get it in
Great! Another lens on my purchase list. Hey Mark, can I come crash in your studio when I get kicked out for buying too much Camera gear? LOL! Another great video bud!
of course!! Bring your cameras
Its more affordable than the Viltroxx 75mm 1.2 and you highly recommend it for portraits.
Do we have a new king or is the Yongnuo just the prince we didnt know about? 👀
For apsc I would still choose the viltrox. you get that 1.2 and that can’t be beat
Happy New Year
😀
