My dad has always wanted a peg board wall for tool storage. But this french cleat design is a million times better. Will definitely be doing that for our own shop.
a tip I've seen a few other utube makers do when pocket-holing sheets together is to superglue the two sheets together first then screw the joint together, there's no chance of the joint slipping while fixing the screws
Love this video. Real content that is usable for anyone. The plywood cleat wall hase rethinking my space. Room for...I don't remember but I'm sure it will be fun
Jonny room for activities, great idea on selling to friends unless they decided to also get rid of the tool and sell them on. I noticed from your past couple of video's that you have become like the most of us married men and enjoying the comfortable living. Don't forget when you're wife first got with you,you was a slightly smaller build and nomatter what your told they never want us becoming too comfortable with the added pounds. As always buddy 💯% 👍 🇬🇧.
I don't have room for nice drawer units in my workshop(just a small garage), so I hang them on my walls. Just put a piece of plywood on the wall, then hammered in nails to hang my tools from... Not really... I took the tools and laid them out on sheets of paper, drew outlines with a black marker, then filled in the outlines with a red marker. Then I cut the drawings out and laminated them. And these drawings were nailed to the plywood. (toolsets such as a 8 - 19mm spanner set is done as one drawing). If I decide to reorganise, I just pull the nails out and nail the drawings up in the new position. Not as elegant as tool drawers, but it's organised and cheap.
Foam inserts are great, right up until you break a tool and have to replace it with something that doesn't quite fit, or buy a new tool and have nowhere to put it. I prefer to have a drawer for each class of thing and then everything else lives on a pegboard wall so i know where it is and can rearrange if i need to. And those labelling machines are a waste of time, you can't read them from across the shop. Duct tape and a black sharpie and you're good. Cheaper too by miles.
I would love a workshop the size of yours Jonny but sadly I'll have to settle for what I have which is about 20' x 11' like you I made one wall french cleat and it's so much better I'm now using tools I forgot I had cos they were stored in tool boxes. I use bisley drawers which are metal cabinets and they're all labelled up so I'm with you on that. I like the lumber store but don't have the space for one that size but you've inspired me to build something similar to fit the space I do have. Great video buddy
I only have a small garage, som having room for activities is even more imprtant. Otherwise I start every single project by 30 minutes search for at least one tool I was sure was somewhere, where it is not. Som I need to invest some time to make the room for activities tidy and efficient!
I have 322 tools, I know this because every time I get a new tool I record the price, where it came from, and the location where it is. I have four sheds each one is split into bays and each bay starts at “A” to whatever. I keep a list of tools in alphabetical order in each shed, so no matter where I am working I can find a tool without any problems (unless my son has been around) but I try to keep him away from my tools as he has to be reminded of who’s tools they are.
