THANK YOU ROB AND TY FOR WRITING ME BACK,,I HEARD THEM FINE WITH YAESU 530 AND LONG RUBBER DUCK.IT WAS IN PORTSMOUTH R.I. DURING A HS SOCCER GAME,THE PLAY STOPPED (LOL) TO LISTEN,BOTH SIDES.STAY WELL AND THANK YOU AGAIN..
Thanks for sharing. I have heard the ISS before but not that long of a duration. The first day I used my HF radio I heard a QSO between NASA at the Johnson Space Center and a classroom in New England somewhere. 73!
I'd like to try and make contact with an astronaut on the ISS before they retire the ISS in 2031. I've heard astronauts from ISS twice in my life and I heard Andy Thomas when he was aboard Space Station MIR. For hams that may not know, there's a ham repeater aboard ISS you can talk up to and use, or listen to, as it goes over the area.
That’s pretty cool! We had a amateur radio operator in my hometown in Ohio win a lottery Nasa held and got to talk to the Space shuttle Columbia in the early 80’s.
Thank you for posting this. I usually listen in when I know it's coming in. Another radio that's good for seeing the Doppler Effect is the ICOM 705. You can actually see the signal slide along the band scope
@@SevenFortyOne what I wanted next was that Lab 599. That was the perfect radio for what I wanted to do. I guess that's over until this is over, then maybe🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿
Have you built an eggbeater antenna that is resonant for the downlink frequency? Might get better results with those direct overhead passes with such an antenna over your current vertical. Would love to watch a build video of you making one so I could follow along with my own build and someday work you through the ISS repeater. Cheers and 73
My buddy John built one of those and worked one of the astronauts back when they made random contacts. He's got a qsl card and everything. I've yet to try the ISS repeater...maybe this summer I'll give it a shot if I have time
The visual on the Doppler effect was interesting. CuriousMarc has a series of videos on Apollo communication and data equipment which shows how their radios were designed to lock the Moon to Earth to Moon frequency together despite Doppler effect. My only LEO ham radio contact was a packet transmission I made that was acknowledged by the MIR. On a subsequent pass by MIR they were dumping their contact log to ground using packet and I saw my call sign in the list. Also I was able to hear Owen Garriot live from the Space Shuttle as the first ham transmitting from orbit.
that's a lot considering how fast iss zips by from what i understand van allen belts protect to the moon but not mars looks like nasa handed that problem off to space x. did you hear they're trying to use ham to locate the missing mh370 plane apparently ham signals have been recorded for years
The ham radio / mh370 connection is a bit dubious...I'm waiting for more evidence. I have some experience dealing with electronics in space and radiation is a huge concern...I guess we'll see what happens

Very cool that you caught that live! Enjoyed watching!
I was lucky to be home for it

Thats really cool. Very interesting chat he had. They are our closest thing to aliens in space. Lol
Great video Rob. I reckon those kids would’ve been stoked to talk to the space station!

I'd like to get a 705 someday... interesting radio and you can do a ton with it

Very cool . I couldn’t understand the most intriguing part ,, what they do in a medical emergency ?? I went to the other link and heard the answer 👍
Nice. Interesting for sure.
