For Me Malayalam Cinema : Down to Earth Stories with a very grounded and personal treatment. I remember watching a podcast where the speaker was avid Malayalam movie fan. He was talking about these Larger than life movies like KGF and how something like that could never made or atleast be successful Malayalam industry. He gives examples of Pokkir Raja saying how they had to set the whole story in Madurai to even make it believable to audience. I guess he was right.
True that....
Those larger than movies like KGF and Bahubali made incredible business at the Malyalam BO as well. It's about how the movie is presented and how engaging the screenplay is. I guess most of the audience everywhere are mature enough to understand this.
there were mass movies in the 2000s. The issue is there is a general lack of quality in movies
That's because larger than life movies are common in other industries. So, grounded realistic movies are a breath of fresh air for other audiences. It's not the same for Malayalis. Right now we're tired of realistic substandard low budget movies which are made so that they can sell it to an OTT to make a profit. The quality of Malayalam movies have declined considerably since Covid.
These days, we only get around 5 decent movies and one or two excellent movies in a year.
The reality is the highest grossing Malayalam movies are larger than life movies. There's Pulimurugan, the real industry hit of Malayalam. Then there's Lucifer, Bheeshma parvam etc. There's 2018, which is an exception. Last year's top grosser was Thallumaala, which is an action packed colourful entertainer.
A similar movie has been released now, RDX. King of Kotha had huge hype but failed to deliver.
Movies like KGF can be made and become successful in Malayalam. The Kannada industry was nothing before KGF. But we currently lack filmmakers with vision and guts. King of Kotha was directed by the son of legendary director Joshy. Yes we have nepotism in the Malayalam industry too. I don't know what they were thinking. Investing all that money on a debutant.
What the Malayali audience wants is good entertainers. We're sick of all these realistic movies and people are hoping someone makes a proper mass masala movie someday which can be appealing to the Indian audience.
@@akhil__dev kannada industry was everything even before KGF. It's just that people like u did not know. There are many cult classics and top grossing entertainers before KGF and Kaantara too. Kannada film industry has so many legendary actors and talented actors and filmmakers. KGF was the spark that was needed to get the die recognition. If u did not know anything before KGF, then its ur fault not that of the Kannada industry.
I feel like I was the only one who didn't expect anything for KOK.
I knew it was gonna be a cliche, just like most of the gangster drama's.
RDX surprised me .I hated every update of that movie from posters to songs but the filim did exceeded my expectations.
It delivered what KOK couldn't.
I think KOK lacked a charm while RDX even though had less hype delivered a movie with more heart

I went with poor expectations and admitted the fact that DQ is the most strongest character. Maybe because of that I actually enjoyed the movie. It didn't keep me on the edge but I enjoyed each and every frame.
Last year Malayalam cinema produced one of my favourite mass entertainer i.e. Bheesam Parvam. I am still hopeful they can do it.
Every Dulqur character ever - left the home at early age, not liked by conventionally thinking people, wandering elsewhere and then make a return to home place, anger issues.
Maybe he's projecting a bit?😅
Sita Ramam didn't follow this. Nor that dumb bollywood movie with Sonam Kapoor

It is the makers fault that they hyped up just an avg movie this much. DQ has been very vocal about the freshness in the subject in all the pre release interviews and unfortunately we couldn't find that anywhere in the storyline..

Baahubali 2 & KGF 2 are proof that films can surpass the expectations if the product is good. Audience do go with expectations for every film. Hoping to be a good film, or in this case and well packed action film. KoK failed due to average writing and making. Abhilash Joshy is not a bad maker but the hype created was more than what the film could offer. Same problem as Odiyan
In 90s Shaji Kailas and Joshy had proved they can make better and better action films with each release, which peaked with Narasimham. All of them had good/average plot but the screenplay and dialogues were phenomenal - this is what anyone expects from such films, not a Nolan type plot. Good story, great dialogues, decent character arc and above average 4-5 fights sequences. We need good writers, not to get great plots but to manipulate emotions of audience with dialogues and characterization. All the 90s Malayalam action films nailed that. Now we just trying to copy Tamil/Telugu action films but with little improvement.

Excellent take..I agree the character arc of the protogonist is flat.
As ashwant Kok opines, this movie looked like a spoof and even serious films and cringe dialogues like liver...liverpool and chembn viond's unintentional comedy does not work. Aishwarya lakshmi was always a one note actress but she did not have anything to do here.

To answer your final question, it’s your fault that you are looking for elements that you think are part of a certain template that you regard as a mass entertainer movie. If you dive into the character of Raju and see what he wants even he is the most powerful from minute 1 to 175 you might get I idea what the story is about. In my opinion, Kok is movie which we can enjoy like a drama, slowly, thinking about each individual in the plot and what they want from the central character and also the dialogues which means so much more than it’s literal translation. I think your expectation betrayed you.
I am wondering all the tamil/telugu masala movies are like this and people like them. Definitely malayalam needs a bit more convincing stories arc and all. My question is if Kok is like this what about KGF or a pushpa?
Masala imo is a separate genre itself like sci fi or comedy. Within this genre there are many that succeed, and far more than don't. Even in Tamil or Telugu movies there are many that don't pull off masala with conviction. Kgf and pushpa are couple of films that have far more conviction than their counterparts and personally i don't look at it as malayalam vs Telugu/tamil.
A good comparison of KGF would perhaps be another Kannada film called Kabzaa which tried to rip it off. Once you watch it I guess you'll understand what sets KGF apart.
The character arc, staging of the scene, dialogues and ofcourse the charisma of the actor...many factors that contribute to making a masala film work
In Malayalam itself I personally loved Bheeshma Parvam and Varathan a lot: great examples of how to do masala right.
I think it’s more our fault as consumers because we compare upcoming movies to older ones. We create our own expectations which let us down. I think marketing departments prey on such instincts.

I am that Guy how haunts his friends to watch something he likes so is my love for Malayalam Cinema it made me the cool guy in the group who watched movie wtih CC and recommended gems. but KOK shattered my image i am calling up asking my friends no to book tickets for the Hindi release. Malayalm Cinema should remain true to its core they have been PAN India in the level no industry has been able to like "Chota Chetan" back in those days or creating cult classics like "Hera Pheri" "Bhoolbhulaya" "Drishyam" thanks to Malayalam remakes many actors/directors are staying relevant in other Industries even now there are 11 upcoming malayalam remakes in Hindi in 23-24

Mani kandan deserves it yes, but I think the jury decided to be “politically neutral” in giving awards, that’s why we didn’t see karnan or jai bhim get a single award in the main categories. Pushpa brought out the second career best performance in Allu Arjun(first being Cable Raju from Vedam), please don’t belittle the performances of other actors and call it a cry time for other south states. Instead think of the oppression that south cinema has been facing since the national awards have started. Lots of renowned South Indian directors never got their recognition, in the first few decades it was as if the national awards for only bollywood films. Now when our actors, directors and movies have started getting their recognition, it’s not the time to be divisive and play politics.
