The investors asked for a screen test because it had been 8 years since her last film. Understandably they wanted to know what she looked like after 8 years. She was no longer under contract to a studio. No studio wanted her because she was not a guaranteed money maker as evidenced by the last few films she had made. So private investors wanted to protect their investment. After filming this test, Garbo went to Italy to meet with the investors but they grew suspicious because she wanted to meet with them in a darkened room with her sunglasses on. The investors got spooked..hence no movie. This is what I read in an old magazine.
Same with Joan Crawford for Mildred pierce and she ended up winning a academy holywood was notoriously known for destroying stars careers way to early in the game smfh

Unfortunately, even though a star may be adored by the public, the same public that adores you may not pay money to see you in a film. That is the position that Miss Garbo was in when this screen test was done. Garbo had been away too long and other actresses and other styles of acting took over. By 1975, Elizabeth Taylor was in the same position. Having once been a bankable star it puzzled Miss Taylor that even though she was still mobbed in 1975, investors were reluctant to finance a film starring Elizabeth Taylor. Being mobbed by fans doesn't necessarily meant that these fans will go see your films. You are merely a legend to them. These same fans will go see Faye Dunaway instead of Liz Taylor.
