This performance is unlike any other I think I have ever witnessed. The synthesis of sound is unparalleled. And all of it is showcasing the singers, M. Reza Shajaran's voice. The vocal gymnastics are unreal - sometimes soaring, sometimes thrashing, tripping - falling - tumbling and walking to climb and float again. I would translate the title as "About Love" (Az Eshgh). Shajarian has chosen three different poems from three different poets. I tried to put them together in the simplest way in one piece as if they had a hidden puzzle to become one story. Here it is my take: 1. Behahani: Why did you leave me? Why didn't you look back to my love? 2. Sadi answers: That wasn't real love, real love burns you. 3. Baba Tahir continues: O' you, my burning love, why don't you show me your kindness instead of this wrath? (leaving and not paying attention to me ...) * Baba Tahir concludes: value yourselves in the present with love before life (or death) break you apart.
I want to add to the many comments thanking @NPR Music for bringing individuals like Shajarian on this show. I am very grateful for this video of a master singer!

Anyone who's played Civ 5 before, this is the guy who sings the original Persia soundtrack songs (Morghe Sahar).
Never knew he did a Tiny Desk concert, legend!
Mohammad taghi e bahar is the original singer of Morgh e Sahar but Shajarian also sang it
I'll keep an ear out, thanks.

Volleyball player PURYA FAYAZI likes this music. He plays now in Będzin, Poland, but listen to Mohammad Reza Shajarian's music when he drives the car and cannot think about volleyball.
Ok then. You win the prize for the most random comment I've ever read 😆
The best comment👍
Get well soon, please! The world needs people like you to heal itself :( Love Shajarian
When Iranian music meets African percussion. Respect.
Love this man and what he stands for I wish he alive today
I was completely unprepared for the passion and beauty coming out of that mans mouth. I cant believe I had no idea who that is and how famous he was.
Just happy to live and grow in this culture.
Proud Iranian ✌🏻
Sure
Iran was marvellous back in the Times but not anymore unfortunately
Wow.. words are too weak to express how beautiful this is
Truly humbling, seeing a master at work
I shed a couple tears listening to this. his singing brings out a yearning deep inside of me. azadi wa khoshi baraye hame barodarha wa sisdarha e irani wa dar hame Dunya ❤️❤️❤️
RIP great Shajarian. You were one of the greatest. We'll miss you. Greetings from Barcelona, Catalonia :-(
Hayatımda bu kadar uyumlu bir ortamı hiç gormemistim .. müzisyenler muazzam , Shajarian in tarifi izahı zaten mümkün değil ... İnsallah saglik sıhhat versin büyük üstad ..
I know why all the comments are showing appreciation for the legendary voice of Shajarian but WOW those instrumentalists are incredible !!!
i come back to this often, crazy performance by everyone
I would like to wish maestro Shajarian a very speedy recovery. Also, thank you NPR Music for sharing this amazing piece of art with the world. Ostad Shajarian's voice is immortal and I am glad the rest of the world gets to enjoy this beautiful piece of music. Ps. you should have his son Homayoun over as well!
It is such a gift to have this performance.
Totally metal without being metal. Kudos, NPR. Without you...I don't even want to think about it.
One of Iran's national treasures!! Incredible voice and performance, and here on Tiny Desk?! Pinch me.
Afarin Ostad!!
I would translate the title as "About Love" (Az Eshgh). Shajarian has chosen three different poems from three different poets. I tried to put them together in the simplest way in one piece as if they had a hidden puzzle to become one story. Here it is my take:
1. Behahani: Why did you leave me? Why didn't you look back to my love?
2. Sadi answers: That wasn't real love, real love burns you.
3. Baba Tahir continues: O' you, my burning love, why don't you show me your kindness instead of this wrath? (leaving and not paying attention to me ...)
* Baba Tahir concludes: value yourselves in the present with love before life (or death) break you apart.
Thank you for this
Thanks for the Translation!
Tha death is a rock and man is like glass!
Spellcheck my friend:
“Man is like the Grass”
Barry White glass my dear, death is a rock and man is like glass!
STUNNING! And am I the only one who though the guy in the tie was just the band's accountant standing around until he opened his mouth? LOL!
he is master shajarian my dear ❤
His son is as good as him too, and very similar voice.
@@mahassab1398 No-one is as good as him! ;) but he is the future
I thought he was an aging Stephen Colbert.
Oh God laughed so hard hahahha. He is abit sick at the moment. God blesses him.
I want to add to the many comments thanking @NPR Music for bringing individuals like Shajarian on this show. I am very grateful for this video of a master singer!
The universe lost this high-ranking man before he was honored to know him. He is a symbol who, through his efforts, kept alive a part of the cultural heritage of humanity. You play and sing in our hearts forever.
12:40-13:00 he says : " My Dears , Know Each Others Value , Cause Angel Of Death "Ajal" Is like Rock, And Humans Life is Like Glass"
RIP - He is the one of the legends for our modern culture for all iranians both at home and abroad in diaspora. Thanks NPR for recording this relic while he was still with us!
How is that even possible ? Most young Iranians don't know him.. NPR just brought this guy from the deepest areas of Persian heritage music back on youtube.
Ooh!!! Yes, please!!! More of this on Tiny Desk and more of this kind of music in my life in general!!
Shajarian is a legend, and a national hero for all Iranians. Alas, there will never be any quite like him.
Ostad (“master”) Shajarian has passed away today at the age of 80 after a long fight against kidney cancer. Thanks to npr and tiny desk team for producing this treasured performance. He will live in our hearts forever.
I love to see a man sing with passion and full abandon like that! Great players.
I am 70 years old, and since I was high school student, I used to listen to him.
Later on, I was living not far from his home and my daughters were her daughter se-tar student, I listen to him whenever I go and come back from my work.
I moved to Houston, Texas, I listen to him more than any other singer.
Now, I live in Nashville, and almost in daily bases. I listen to him.
He used to sing in variety style of traditional music.
He was singer, inventor of different musical instrument, stylist hand writhing artist, he was against oppressive regime, supporter of people, he had superior morality, and was compassionate to name a few of his characteristics and intellectual Capacity!
I can't and don't want to believe that he's not with us anymore.
Always in my heart.
ای ساکن جان من آخر به کجا رفتی؟
Usually, I come back here to see this iconic episode of Tiny Desk for Iranians. In memory of Ostad Shajarian.
are those drums floating in water?!
these are some of the most interesting and beautiful instruments and people! You make my heart melt!
Tiny Desk taken to a much higher level. So marvelous and unpretentious. Bravo!
Maesros indeed! I am totally unfamiliar with Iranian music but, after encountering this by chance, this shall be rectified.
Please search for "Shajarian Rabbana".
It's one of his MOST famous, albeit earliest pieces. It's breathtaking.
He's singing some verses in Quran.
These drums (not to mention everything) freaking blew my mind! Awesome, awesome music being made here. How on earth does he do those giant trills??
There was a teacher at my old school who sang like him. Needless to say, whenever he busted that voice out, it was lit.
Wow so amazing. I am sorry that he passed away, excited to hear more of his music.
Master class all. I'm a bit speechless really, such powerful music and vocals, and the percussion was incredible.
Rest in Peace Shajarian. Your beautiful voice and poetic lyrics will continue to touch the hearts of people for generations to come.
Today is a sad day for us.
Rest in peace Master 🖤
Rest in peace "Morghe Sahar"
@NPR Music: This would be a good time to repost this
no one on the face of the earth has the voice of SHAJARIAN
Rest in Peace Ustadd Shajarian. I discovered your music by accident on UA-cam and have been listening for the past 8 months. May his soul find eternal peace. Love from Pakistan.
In Persian we say "Ostad", not "Ustad"
Grand Master Shajarian. This is a true masterpiece. Amazing performance.
The likes of him is a rarity - he is forever cast into the rich Persian culture
I love the music you are putting out. Not least musicians from different worlds jamming together
R.I.P Mohammad Reza Shajarian

Amazing! this sound is in top 50 sound in the world!
Vow! at 73! He was amazing, full of melody and music and in absolute control of his voice. We miss him so much.
