    Thanks for the video. I bought an improved Meyer lemon this spring, and I just noticed it had sprung up a 3ft branch shooting straight up the middle from below the graft. I snapped it off, but was wondering if I could/should try to plant it to develop some roots to use it as a rootstock in a year or two? Thanks

    Would it be a bad idea to use shoots from ancient apple trees I've found in the forest of this old farm?

    • @StefanSobkowiak
      @StefanSobkowiak  16 днів тому

      Not at all, go ahead, just realize it will be a standard sized tree (full size at maturity). So best to train it when young by bending branches below horizontal and NOT pruning off branches. This will give a smaller tree that will begin to bear at a younger age (maybe 5 years).

    So this root stock off an apple tree you buried can only be used as place to graft that type of fruit 🍎

    Hi Steven. We are inheriting a cut down orchard in Idaho with a lot of root stock that’s grown back over 15 years since they were cut down. Should we graft right onto what’s in the ground? They’re pretty wild looking and we want to remove some to replant(and do NAP system), but they’re huge. Any tips?!

    • @StefanSobkowiak
      @StefanSobkowiak  2 роки тому

      Yes you can overgraft large rootstock, just use side branches and main trunks and add several scion per cut (I’ve seen 6 on one cut).

  • @jmr
    @jmr 8 місяців тому

    I just bought bare root rootstock. They are being delivered this week and now I can't find any information on whether it's better to graft them now(this spring) or let grow in the ground for a while first so they can recover(graft next spring).

    • @StefanSobkowiak
      @StefanSobkowiak  8 місяців тому +1

      Graft now and any ones that don’t take can be grafted in a couple of weeks (if you have fridge stored scion) and then can be bud grafted in august - September.

    I always wondered how root stock is grown commercially for grafting is it rooted cuttings or is it grown from seed

    • @StefanSobkowiak
      @StefanSobkowiak  11 місяців тому +1

      Depends on the rootstock size mostly. For large standard trees you can use seedlings, for semi dwarf and dwarf you want root strikes (rooted shoots coming off the root), look up “stool bed” the technique used to multiply rootstock.
