- 2023 has been a year of notable changes in the European carbon market. After years of robust growth, both in prices and volumes, we witnessed stagnating volumes and prices tapering off after reaching an all-time high at €100/tonne in February. Throughout the year, prices have been supported by the prospect of supply tightening that will gather pave towards 2030.
Pulling in the opposite direction, a near-term increase in auction volumes and a dim economic outlook have been bearish drivers. Understanding these dynamics is crucial, especially with the impending regulatory changes.
Starting 1st January 2024, the EU ETS will undergo supply-tightening measures as part of the Fit-for-55 reform. Further out looms the process of setting a 2040 emission target. Our webinar will provide a comprehensive overview of these developments and their potential impact on carbon prices.
