      I’m a Boxer but I don’t wanna make one of my coaches whom I spar with afraid of me, I wanna be able to motivate them to help me (if that will ever happen meaning that I’m just delusional). I want the ones I hate more than I love to be afraid of me, to teach them a lesson for affecting the people and children who actually need the help; people including children actually committed suicide for that exact reason, for being bullied and being down. I love everyone and hate them at the same time. 😇

    You are absolutely correct. I am 72 and sparred a few weeks ago with guys less than half my age, who are still in their prime. My goal was to stand in there and force them to be defensive as often as I could. The pleasure I got from being able to hang in there and not get run off the mat was immense.

    • @shevetlevi2821
      @shevetlevi2821 2 роки тому +6

      I agree. I'm near the end of my 60s, virtually the same age as you. To me in addition to everything else it's saying no to aging and decay. That there's still more fun to had and that the life force still runs strong in me. I look at the other guys my age and it's like looking at another generation.

    Before watching, 'be successful' means to me three things. 1) don't get injured or injure your valuable sparring partner. 2) Learn something and grow 3) apply your training, IOW, don't work randomly but with purpose as much as possible.

    when I first started to watch the video I thought either you were joking or it was clic bait. But then watching the whole video I understood what you meant by "winning every round". Yes it makes sense and is a really smart approach to a sparring session against stronger, faster, younger and more experienced sparring partners: setting a goal and try to accomplish little progress. I´ll definetly try it by next sparring session.

    I love this. I'm new at sparring, and I'm getting killed almost every time. I love the idea of moving the goal posts. Like I had a round with my coach, and I landed an awesome counter against a hook to the body. I felt like a million dollars. Just one really good counter made me feel like I won sparing. Was so proud that that counter was just 100% solid.

  • @marvinzegarra
    @marvinzegarra 4 роки тому +32

    In my case it's doing more combos and moving forward during a sparring match. My problem is usually that I'm so focused on not getting hit that I throw one, maybe two strikes when I'm in range and then back up or I'm not sure what to do next everytime, which ends up in me getting cornered a lot.

    I like how you guys spare, lightly not egotistical trying to hurt each other . All mma gyms I've been to when sparring either I have to end the fight or defend myself against a bigger guy trying to know me out and try to sneak in good shots .
    One secret for you bro is when your facing an opponent with an opposite lead(if you fight orthodox and your opponent is south paw) if you keep your foot on the outside of his, it's really easy to land left hooks. You can use it to row in and go for right straights as well

    Good advice, I’m 49 and started training about 5 months ago. Had my first sparring session with my instructor about a month ago, before the world went to shit, and my only goal was to not freak out when he hit me in the face. He did and I didn’t. I touched him maybe once but for me that was a win because I met my goal. Now I can set a new goal for the next session and keep building of those experiences. Keep up the good work man. I know it’s tough for small business owners right now especially for one whose married to a nurse but hopefully we’ll all get through this and come out stronger on the other side.

    I admit the title almost had me, but as an amateur fighter I agree that what you said was one of the most important lessons I learned when I started competing. My coach told me "Don't just spar just to spar." That really made me be a lot more deliberate with training. Little things like using my jab more during rounds, making sure I'm breathing on shots, sometimes spending rounds at a time working one combo on the heavy bag, etc. I'm sure other people have said similar things to me prior, but that was the time it really stuck.

    What you're talking about is called objective based sparring: both people have an objective in mind while sparring and if they fulfill it, they win. Both do not tell the other what it is and when they do it, they say what they did (or you can wait until the end).
    It's even better when you get a middle-man to tell you both an objective that the other doesn't know. Really cool exercise, people did it when I was doing HEMA.

  • @pepelefrog3697

  • @enoughofyourkoicarp
    @enoughofyourkoicarp 4 роки тому

    Tsunzian (sp?) philosophy (the teachings of Tsun Tzu) defines victory not as winning the battle but as accomplishing your objectives, where each battle is a series of victories leading to a desired outcome. Tend to each objective in the battle to become a better fighter and the desired outcome will follow. Sparring, as with any form of training, is a battle where mutual victory is absolutely possible.

    I just spent 2 weeks in Brazil getting my ass handed to me high level black belts at Ricardo Delariva's school in Copacabana. It was great! Every night I just tried to do better and better. By the last couple of nights I was passing some of their guards, stuffing their passes and I even tapped a Brown Belt for the first time. I kept my focus on small improvements everyday and learn the move of the day. If you don't know Ricardo only teaches one move everyday, that's it. So you really get a chance to learn it and know it by the end of class. If you want to learn some different shit go to Ricardo Delariva's Gym. $177 for an Atama Single Weave Patched up Gi and 2 weeks of classes.

    I haven't been sparring for at least 3 years, and now that I'm "back" I've seemed to have forgotten everything. My composure sucks, I gas out easily and closing the distance almost seem impossible.
    My virgin nose even cracks when getting stung. Its really embarrassing, but at the same time motivating.

    I have done that before. Last time I rolled with one of the brownbelts in our gym, my goal was to not get sweept the same way that he got me in every previous round. I succeeded in that and went home feeling like I won.

    Great advice! I love picking one "secret" thing to practice, opponent does that same. Afterwards we try to figure out what the other guys thing was.

    Great video, a good mantra which is basically the same concept that I teach my students is that there are no "winners" but the only loser is the one that leaves the mat who doesn't learn anything. Those small goals you are explaining are great! Like when i first started bjj i started telling myself ok instead of saying oim not going to tap, my goal was gain a good position any position. Once i got better i started being more specific, ok im going to get the mount, and i would keep fighting until o got the mount from various situations and positions.

    I really LOVE this thank you!
    Sometimes you are not making progress with a move or against a person because you are stucked within your head.
    I remember the training session where I made instant progress. It was after a few weeks of hard work and dealing with some emoitional roller coaster. I went in the dojo and unintentionally did not give a f*ck anymore...and it WORKERD! Instead of being worried against better, more skilled, bigger and/ or more experienced opponents I was not being intimidated anymore and focused on doing the basic things right. After that session I added my own signatures and sooner or later I forced my will on most of the other guys.
    Now I will add some other goals too! Thanks Mike!
    Ps: we still want more of Mona from the next door ;)

    Well I am 13 and done kickboxing now for 1year and 3 months I sparred a 22 years old guy he did muay tai I could not touch him If I did he would give me a front kick or side kick he was the hardest opponent for me it s both especially attacking more I need to punch more and then I can make an opening and attack wherever it lands just of you sparring a good guy that could teach you you learn no matter how old he is you can still learn.

    well, of courses there are no winning or losing in sparring, you can only either learn or not. But in this video, you have redirect "winning" to "success", meaning you can do some specific goals in your mind before sparring. That s what we do all the time to make progress. So thumb up !

    Didn't realize I had already been doing this, but yeah this video is perfect. It also perfectly aligns with what elite practitioners say how people should train, which is to set goals in each session that you look for rather training with someone better or worse than you (different goals with each, skill level dependent). I had heard that before and I'm now realizing that I've been gravitating towards doing that more and more recently. I'm gonna try to do it on purpose more often, now to refine skills.

    The guy I train with at the boxing gym and who’s also my friend is really good at head movement. I still haven’t hit him him in the head yet. But last time I really wanted to land a straight to the body and I managed to do it off of a double jab and I was happy with that.

    Tripping (or sweeping) is always a win! Nomatter how many times your opponent hits you, if you sweep him once, you can look at him like 'I totally own you'. (Be sure to stop immediately right after the sweep, though! :-)

    Sports psychology is the most important part of fighting imo. When has there ever been a great fighter who didn't have an incredible mindset.

    This vid is super helpful as a beginner who's hardly touched sparring yet and it's probably the next step. Been binging your channel over isolation. Also damn, would be cool to see Seth and Cliff spar!

    That's the way I've always approached sparring. I just got back into it last year for the first time since I was a kid, so most of the guys I'm up against are much better than I am. A "win" for me is if I did better than the last time. Sometimes I set specific goals in a sparring match. Maybe feel like I need to work on kicks, so all i do is try to create openings to throw kicks. Or maybe I need to work on footwork and slips and counters, so I focus mainly on trying to read my opponent and react to what he's throwing. Even if what I'm attempting is not working, I only feel like I "lost" if I didn't learn anything.
