I bought the MM M4 the week it was released. I've got 4 Macs (2 I7, MBP, 1 MacBook Air M1 and now this one). I use the older ones to browse the web and the basic tasks. I used the M1 to produce music and it was pretty damn good (specially compared to my older I7 quad cores). If I was quite happy with the M1, imagine now that the things runs smoothly better on this machine. At some point I thought that I would never use a desktop again, but this one changed my mind without hesitation, a better chip with 16GB of ram and ready for latests updates at an unbeatable price? the best Mac I bought for the money since I use Apple computers back in 1997.
I went with the Mac Mini M4 Pro and it’s been a beast with my 2 Studio Displays. Form factor has been perfect for my standing desk in its little shelf. As a Graphic Designer it’s been buttery smooth for me as I do use Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign sometimes simultaneously. A little bit of Aftereffects. I did upgrade to 1TB because I do plan to use this Mac for a long time, I haven’t upgraded since M1. I honestly feel this is my favorite Mac ever.
I would only recommend use your money to upgrade the RAM on the M4 MacMini to 32 GB and then purchase external storage to plug into your MacMini. I did just that and I only spent $165.00 US and NOT $800 for 2 TB PCIE NVME with a TB4 SSD Enclosure, and now I have a total of 2.25 TB of storage that is faster than the one which is included in the MacMini. Additionally, if you use a MacBook also, all of your files will be portable for you to work on either devices.
Just bought the M4 Mac Mini with 16GB RAM and 512GB storage at a great price. Since my work provides all necessary hardware and tools for work tasks this Mac Mini will ONLY be used for personal / productivity tasks. I already have a quality monitor, keyboard, and mouse from work, so it was an easy decision. Just plug and play. One upgrade from the base model should suffice for most people. If you need higher specs, you'll know it. If you have to conjure up hypotheticals you probably don’t. With the savings, I also got a new iPad and some accessories. Apple products are powerful and reliable, can’t go wrong. Only thing worse than a bad decision is no decision. Snag it and enjoy using it! Thanks for the detailed review, very helpful. Cheers.
In essence despite the starting configuration we end saying: future proof with M4 Pro 32/1TB set up. That’s a very expensive machine but as we get higher video spec such as 8/6k and pro grading it makes sense. Is that where the T5 tech also becomes useful as large T5 enabled external storage comes on the market? One other recommendation should be the faster LAN as fibre takes over.
The M4/24MB/512GB config appears to be a standard SKU, as Costco has it for $889, just ten dollars more than the Apple EDU pricing. That config is going to handle whatever most people want out of a computer.
So the M4 Mac Mini is great for general web browsing, data analysis via Tableau, programming, and photo editing. For video edting, it is not the best option for professional video editors due to limited TFLOPS (4). Only use it for light video editing with hobby videos or small youtube channels.
You make a very good argument for pros or semi-pros to get an upgraded Mini. But if that's not your deal, I'm betting the basic model will satisfy one's needs. Moreover, rumors fly that the memory at least may prove to be upgradeable. And with a good external SSD you should be covered. Whichever you choose, I don't think you can lose.
Great review. Best one I've watched so far! Your review made me glad that to replace my (HD died last week) late-2014 Mini, I ordered the new 2024 Mac Mini M4. I almost bought a 2023 Mac Mini M2, but I just couldn't see paying 120,000 for a last generation Mini that has the same amount of RAM but half the disc size of my Late 2014 Mini, especially when the new 2024 Mini M4 is only 20,000 yen more. But I may change my order from the 16GB RAM/512 GB SSD to the 24 GB RAM/256 GB SSD, and get an external SSD as you mentioned.
Think I'd stop at 512GB as that's a faster drive than the 256Gb model, even though the extra cost is ridiculous, so my external 4Tb TB4 drive would cover a more serious upgrade there. As to memory, I'd like 32Gb, but in reality, adding another £200 on top of the top end M4 non-Pro model is getting to the front door of the base M4 Pro model.
M4 pro upgraded. I design for video and produce music. For design even my ancient 15 year old cheese grater is fine but its time I retire it. I don't do print very often and I can only design so fast. Music not so much. The requirements for soft synths and effects keep getting more cpu greedy. I'm going to upgrade to 48 gb ram ( id rather not for the price but im currently working with 64 gb ram) ill also have to upgrade the internal hd to 1 tb ssd. My current machine has 1T and its fine. I'll eventually get a bunch of external drives. This machine is way beyond my budget but I need to be future proofed so thinking about the price over years ends up making sense instead of having too upgrade again sooner.
It's so refreshing really, You're the most normal UA-camr so far with regards to the bottom-placed power button. All the others threw a tantrum about the button placement and acted as if picking up this tiny box and pushing the button once in a while needed the same effort, dedication and willpower as storming the beaches of Normandy or building the Hoover dam.
16/256 may seem OK for some people, but ask yourself what kind of configuration you had in 2018? If it seems limiting now then double that to 32/512 at a minimum. I think the M4 Pro version is a better bet for video work. The faster internal chip speed, the higher data transfer rate, the presence of the Thunderbolt 5 ports & the ability to go with more RAM are all significant upgrades & this is still a budget machine at under $2K. I look at this like it was a camera lens purchase. The difference between a budget priced lens & a premium F/2.8 zoom is roughly the same as the difference between the base model & an M4P Mini specked up. If you're going to use this every day, buying a slower machine to save a few hundred bucks will leave a lot of people dissatisfied down the road.

Didn't convince me. Sent it back. And waited for m4. Now wanted to switch to m4. But desktop with Studio Display. Can't wait any longer for Mac Studio. My iMac is slowly coming to its knees ;-) Mac mini Base with 32 GB and 1 TB or Mac Mini m4 pro with 48 GB RAM. What is the recommendation? I will definitely go for 1 TB. Time Machine runs on external 4 GB and archive on 2 additional hard drives.

Recommending an M4/24GB/1TB model gets one to within $200 of the base M4 Pro model, so it doesn't make much sense to me to go that route. Additionally it's not a standard SKU (so it has to be ordered from Apple at list price.) But what is a standard SKU us the M4/24GB/512GB model, and that means Costco will stock it. That M4 only has 1 fan in the MBP., that's why the thermals are so bad. the 16 inch variants and max variant 14 have an extra fan.
