I lived in a one bedroom in d vieng condos in santitham ( just directly north of the old city) on a year lease from June 2017 until May 2018. Newer building with a gorgeous pool and fitness center. I paid 12,000 baht a month. Great location with tanin market a 5 minute walk away with a modern supermarket also only 5 minutes away. Arriving in off season gives you better prices and more availability. Just note that Nimman is a hipper hot area for nomads and back packers but is more expensive.
Phil will never admit this. I bet he would of settled for several of them; however, sweet ole Deana had to complicate things. Good channel nonetheless.
This is such a great video! It's like House Hunters in Thailand. And as I was weighing all the options, I saw the Siri and I was like, "Pick that one!" And you did. Who would have thought? It's cool to see a some examples of different apartment. It's so cheep! In the US, most apartments that size would be double the cost.
Haha it felt like House Hunters! ...I used to watch that show all the time and I always liked HH International. And, YAY! You guessed it right! Winner! Cost of living out here is SOOOOOOO much cheaper than back in the USA. I lived in Charleston, SC for some years and most people probably don't think of South Carolina and high rental prices. My rent was $750-$1k....for a single room...with a shared bathroom....and two roommates....and it wasn't nearly as nice as any of the places we checked out here. It's crazy how expensive rent gets in the US!
This is one of the best CM apartment videos that I have seen. I have looked at many of those same apartments and think that you are spot on in your assessment. I spent two months in Chiang Mai Lodge, it was nice to have the apartment cleaned and sheets and towels changed weekly, as you mentioned great location for restaurants and massage plus there is a small convenience store nearby called the Green Mart that is stocked with many hard to find western goods. This past January and February I stayed at Prime Square, I too was concerned about construction noise, but it was really not a problem. I like the Nimman/ Huay Kaew area but If you are on a tight budget you can find comparable apartments in other parts of town for a lot less money,
Thanks so much! We've been to CM a few times and always run around with house hunting for the first few days. We are hoping this helps someone out there looking to live in CM for a month or longer. It's good to hear about Prime Square and the construction! We've experienced some bad construction with our old place on Phuket, and didn't want a repeat of that. Thanks for your comment and info! 😊
Haha, right? If those prices we're back in the US we might actually go to live there! I could only imagine how expensive the UK can get! Thanks for watching! 🤗💜
I gave up on cable & router internet in Thailand as it was unreliable, and slow in the evenings, as an alternative I switched to 4G which I could get a steady 30Mbps down and up, from memory Dtac had an unlimitted deal for 599 Baht a month at the start of this year
Hi! Great info and wow, the names of the various apartment complexes are quite inviting! Curious on why were you focusing in the original search area . . . are there certain activities or things in that area? Perhaps walkability? Thanks!!
Haha it's always cool to say you live at "The Dome" or "Luxury Huay Kaew." The Nimman Road area is the biggest expat and digital nomad area in Chiang Mai. It also has a lot of short term and monthly rentals that work out for renters! It would be considered walkable for Thailand and there are a lot of restaurants in the area. 🤗💜
Great video, very helpful. May I ask, what do they ask for when you are renting for 1 or 2 months? Do they want a photocopy of your passport? Is your payment paid up front, or at the beginning of each month? Do they ask for a security deposit/damage deposit? Thank you in advance for your information. Very well done video!
Great video, thank you so much. I have two questions if anyone could answer - is it difficult to negotiate with the management if you don't speak fluent Thai? Also, do you have to make appointments with apartments to look or can you just walk in and ask to look and book it on the spot?
It's very easy in Chiang Mai. These types of apartments cater to foreigners, so they always speak a good amount of English. Also, you can basically walk in to most of the places (that's what we did). There is often a receptionist downstairs that can show you a room right away. Sometimes (I would say maybe 20% of the time) you need to contact the "manager" though. But their number will be on a blackboard or they give it to you. You can also schedule over facebook if you see posts in any of the housing groups.
@@DeanaandPhil Thank you so much, very helpful information. Do many allow short term, month to month arrangements? Also, was an international drivers permit needed to rent the scooter? I have subscribed to your channel and really like how you guys explain things. Great job.
Yes! We've done long term and short term rental apartments in Thailand. Certain apartments prefer long term but there are plenty with one month rentals or month to month! And as far as scooter rentals they usually don't verify... 😅 You definitely should have in International Driver's Permit (in the event you are stopped by the police), but the rental places rarely check. Thanks so much for subscribing! Wishing you safe travels to Thailand! 🤗💜
Prime condo is what i like bc everything is new n fresh. I understand the construction. Do u know how much a 2 bedroom condo would cost n deposit in low season for long term. I understand its all negotiable but I just want an estimate. Thank u
We completely agree with the new and fresh! It's always nice! And sorry, we aren't sure the prices for 2 bedroom condos. The prices during low season might be a little less than what we we're initially offered. The thing that will really lower the price is how long of a contract and the location. There are some cheaper condos outside of the Nimman Road area. Hope this somewhat helps! 🤗💜
Thanks! If the video is too fast for you, you can adjust the playback speed. If you're on a mobile phone select the three dots at the top right. If you're on a computer, the settings button on the bottom right of the video will have a playback speed option. You can always slow down or speed up a video. Hope this helps in the future! :)
There are trash cans in every building or right outside all of the buildings we looked at in this video. You can always higher a cleaning service as well.
Cam Larocque Hopefully this helped! 🤗💜 If you're coming in September you'll be ahead of busy season and you can get some better deals! Definitely! Let us know if you have any other questions!
Haha... not sure if that is the official term. We just used the phrase "external internet" to describe the ability to use a third party internet provider and router, like AIS or SiNet in Chiang Mai.
@@DeanaandPhil Understand :) from your experience: Is the shared Internet always bad? You sound negative when talking about it, would you recommend to get external internet?
@@DeanaandPhil I was wondering the same thing. So you mean that you have your own cabled internet subscription, get your own router from eg AIS and connect it to a plug in the apartment? Does this provide you considerably faster/more reliable internet?
This video is out of date. Thailand changed its rules for visas and foreign tourists are abandoning Thailand so rents should be coming down drastically. And the exchange rate for dollars is bad right now.
Hi, I'm thinking of moving to Bangkok into an apartment similar to the condos you have shown. How often would one come across cockroaches/other insects? lol (bit of a phobia)
Not sure about 20 hours a day, but we spent about an average of $50 USD per month on water and electric. We breakdown our monthly expenses in CM in another video -> ua-cam.com/video/sMjkqBJ6qZI/v-deo.html
@@DeanaandPhil Its apparently illegal to charge more than the government rate. Seems the newer places know the law. Which is a huge difference if one is the correct 4 baht per unit and some are double at 8 baht!
We definitely noticed the large variation in prices. Is there anything that can be done if the electricity price is too high or is it better to just choose a different accommodation?
@@DeanaandPhil Sorry I have no idea, however you can try and point out to them that charging more than the set retail price is illegal and see if they reduce the price as 8 baht is very expensive. I am also opposite to you as I would always choose modern over any property as modern will have the latest in safety systems like water sprinklers, smoke stop doors and hopefully less things to go wrong. My sister in law's condo in Bkk has all that, but unfortunately even most modern buildings still use paper thin windows which does make sound a problem as is the case in her condo which is right next to the sky train.
What do you think about these prices in central Chiang Mai? How do they compare to your areas? Comment below! =)

I liked Pansook, I'd definitely prefer a place with its own laundry facilities. The bed looked tiny though! This was such a fun video.
Yeah! Pansook was nice and we debated on that one too. Some of the beds were definitely too small for us. Thanks for watching! 🤗💜
Very well done vid. Informative and helpful. I now have a clear picture of what neighborhood I am going to look to.
