I cannot get over the beauty of this song. If I end up in the same place as David Carroll in the hereafter, I am going to find him and tell him how much this meant to me thirty years after he recorded it.
ua-cam.com/video/jPRuj6TtRKo/v-deo.html Seth and everyone: FYI, here is a live recording on the Phil Donahue show of David Caroll singing this song. There seems to be some kind of a background sound/noise, however it's great to see David sing this. It is truly magnificent. Thank you Seth for showing us this beautiful talent. So sorry to hear that he is gone.
Fantastic deconstruction of one of my absolute favorite songs. Thank you so much. I plan to include some of this information when I perform it now. So much love.
That's so sad thahe died at the recording studio! If the composers weren't arguing he might have been able to record it.Never heard of him or ths song but awesome!
very sad and tragic about the death... Favorite song on the whole album. then comes "i want to go to hollywood, we'll take a glass together (although to really appreciate that one you gotta see it performed) and i like the grand waltz. btw...you were so funny XD
This felt like a damn master class. Nicely done! I just heard this for the first time yesterday. Effing beautiful. This will be my new audition song, and you just did weeks of prep for me. Thank you! Subscribed.
Thank you so much for making this video. The song and Carroll's voice are just ridiculously awesome. I noticed you said that Carroll was a baritone. Does that mean that high A at the end was placed in his middle/head voice? If I didn't know better I'd think that he was belting out that last powerful note in chest.
arnise101 That last note is only an A flat. It’s very possible for a lot of baritones to place in their chest voice. Now, whether David Carroll was a tenor or baritone is a different discussion.
arnise101 he was a baritone but he does full chest that last note. Go watch Seth’s obsessed video where he and his guest talk about baritones. Baritones can hit super high notes it just sounds like baritone hitting a really high note as opposed to a tenor just hitting yet another note lol.
That high note is literally the best sound I've ever heard in my life.

YOURE NOT KIDDING. I HAVE AN INTENSE YEARLY VISIT TO THIS SONG AND ITS HISTORY. ITS DEEP AND ITS REAL.

Yes!!! How have I only just seen this?!
"Ok..By the way... Literally an ice storm happening...Can you just hear the roof fall off? Terrifying..."But we go on...."

vortex vibrato gives me chills
This is like a classic R&H love song on steroids.
"...it's like a diphthong that literally turns into a vortex!"
Thanks for this!

He is a Spinto Tenor. Smaller than Drama, a tenor for sure
Amazing
