- Radiohead were having problems during Idioteque and Thom walked off the stage. The rest followed him; Colin tried to cheer up his little brother.
Filmed on June 1st, 2012, during a show at Prudential Center in Newark, NJ.

This is the best UA-cam comment I have ever seen it made me actually laugh out loud for a few minutes. Thank you man
I was at this show. Important to note that Thom came back on, apologized profusely and promised to play a bunch of extra songs.... and they did. He was a gentleman about it.
Colin Mahoney So he did apologize to Jonny?
I dont think so xD
Not sure if I'm getting a reply to my question but why the fuck was Thom so obtuse?
EgyGeek He's always like that rofl
@@TheEgyGeek He really likes this song so it made him upset when Johnny botched the synth.
It would be so funny if Ed just stayed on stage and played creep by himself

Poor Jonny, at the end when Thom and Colin walk off you can see how upset he is with himself; he wrote this awesome beat on an impossible machine (to your average joe), and of course sometimes it won't work. It's really nice to see that Colin's still upholding his promise to his mother to take care of little brother, even just that little affectionate messing with Jonny's hair would've at least made him realise that it was ok, don't worry about it little bro, there's always next time.

They're only human and let's be honest this is probably the thousandth time they've played this live. You're bound to get it wrong 1 out of 100 and it's a very difficult song for Jonny even if he is a musical genius. I'm not happy to see Thom give up, really though when the song is butchered there isn't anything left to do but to stop and regroup. And that's what they did, they regrouped and came back out for another set. And another thing, this band have been mates for 30 years, look at every other band from the late 80's and early 90's who are still making music today. How many can you say still have all their original band members from the very beginning? Yes they get on each others nerves but they're still together where as many many other bands who are still active today gave up and quit.
Some members have left bands because of drugs like Layne Staley of Alice in Chains or Jimmy Chamberlin of Smashing Pumpkins or John Frusciante of the Chili Peppers. While others left because the band mates just couldn't stand each other anymore like having to deal with lunatic divas like Axl Rose or Courtney Love. Meanwhile Radiohead have all stuck together through thick and thin.
Frusciante didn't left rhcp because of drugs wtf
He did the first time
+Joao Vitor Oh yes he did.
the first time he did, but this guy make it sound like ifhe had left the second time
Using proper FM synthesis during a live setting and having to make it sync up with different parts of a piece is nearing levels of rocket science. And that olde synthesis is fleeting as all heck at times, it just lives it's own life.
i think the issue is more that mistakes compound, so every little error makes it harder and harder to keep up. you can't just pause for a moment and reset like with a guitar.
0:25-0:30 I love hearing the crowd singing along
Artists are sensitive about their shit... Always remember that
Watch Phil just before Thom says "Fuck it". He's trying hard to adapt too.
DoYouDigItNow That's not Phil :P That's Clive. Phil's on (our) left.
Check wikipedia, Clive has been their second drummer for a while.

I don't know about ya'll but I would love to see Radiohead live and them mess up a song. I know they are the badasses they are when they play. I saw them live and they were spectacular!
i thought they were boring live
FacultyBob I would give me left bolloc to see em live
I think the reason Thom gets upset is because he is a professional and he wants the music to sound proper for the fans. I get that.
Kristin Pawlewicz That was the opposite of professional. I think the word you're looking for is "perfectionist".
+B!ack. If Tom is perfectionist he must work on his vox and intoning. He makes it very ugly.
Aleksey Solonenko You do have a point... selective perfectionist?
+Kristin Zeiber also, i imagine this is the part where he reaches his "spiritual crescendo" on the concerts and thats why it made him very angry that the song did not work. the tap on the had by colin at 2:11 tho :D
Attila Murvai Yes, the brothers are always so supportive of each other, aren't they? That was cute.
People need to not get mad at them... Thom or Jonny... they both fucked up... Jonny fucked up by not handling the synth correctly and Thom fucked up by leaving but it happens... and it's easy to call it unprofessional when you're sitting at your computer but when you're actually going on tours and playing long shows it probably gets so stressful and having a performance get fucked is enough to make you that angry.
Omg I wanna hug Jonny :'(
The same thing happened in Peru in 2018, poor Jonny, you can tell that "idioteque" is a difficult song to play live
I feel so bad for Jonny.. He's adorable :/
this is awesome. i don’t think i would focus on how insane their beats are if it wasn’t for videos like this

Video Having Problems During Playback.
No!😂
I love how everything's going to shit and Phil is just there totally oblivious, having the time of his life, shaking his shaker away to himself
everybody makes mistakes, no big deal...I think all of Jonny's awesomeness leading up to this moment is more than enough to allow for a mistake or two
you used to be alright ... what happened ?
Etcetera etcetera
(Collin's bass line)
bip bop
Facts for whatever...
*childrens cheer*
the mistake was not radioheads or jonnys. it was whoever is responsible for their sound at coachella. some people are getting confused. they have played this song a million times without any problem. usually this kind of problems happens at festivals.
I can almost guarantee that there would have been zero negative tension backstage after this happened. Thom basically worships Jonny's technical and musical capabilities. Jonny is continuously taking risks and pushing boundaries, and if there is one single factor that makes Radiohead exceptional, that would be it. Besides, Thom doesn't seem the least bit emotional or frustrated. It was a case of them experiencing a rare glitch, which will almost certainly be identified and corrected before the next show. Accept defeat, shrug shoulders, have a cigarette break, finish the set with something more straightforward. No big deal.
Welcome to the wonderful world of modular synths.
Surprising that he walked off stage rather than just laughing off the mistake. The crowd loves it either way.
sometimes i appreciate how the audience and even some of the band members help thom out while he's forgetting the lyrics
now that's true teamwork and companionship, and it's no wonder they all stuck around for this long
He didn't forget the lyrics
He did not forget the lyrics💀💀
faster jonny! faster jonny! faster jonny! not that fast jonny!!
Jonny I love you.
As a musician I can’t imagine many things scarier than trying to patch a modular synth to a specific pattern with Thom Yorke breathing down my neck. I also know next to nothing about how to use modular synths, which is probably part of the reason why.
why Thom so piss about it? couples of time Thom also mess up the song in concert by singing lazily and out of tone. Jonny is a genius, and he rarely, again rarely make a mistake in live, Thom was way more clumsy. I'm talking here as a hard core radiohead fans but this vid really piss me off.
"I'm talking here as a hard core radiohead fans but this vid really piss me off."
Trust radiohead on this one if your a big fan :D
But if the rythms get out of sync the whole thing kind of falls apart, if the singer sings a bit off key it's not as big of a deal, the rest of the band's flow doesn't get affected the same way.
Haroon Rancak I'm not sure any of them really knew what to do if that machine starts messing up, nobody's mentioned this happening at any other gigs. Modular synths are complex shit to use live and if something fucks up, it's incredibly difficult to get yourself back on track. When you're all on stage together, the pressure can get to you.
+Haroon Rancak The Modular Synth requires the correct (and a constant) voltage in order to work correctly. When you're in a studio it's easier to control the voltage going to the equipment, but when they are on tour they (sometimes) get irregular voltage differences. This causes the Modular Synth to go out of tune, hence why it sounded shite and why Thom was pissed off. Jonny was trying his best to get the equipment working correctly but he was fighting a losing battle (also the reason why Colin gave him a little tap on the head, as a "good try" gesture.)
+Tyler Durden I also noticed for that tour Jonny didn't use his original space echo live, instead the boss re-issue, less troublesome on the road I suppose... I wonder if they'll get Clive in again for the next live tour and just sample Jonny's modular onto his drum pad.... Or the drum pad as a midi controller and try to match the sounds to a non-patchable analog synth like the dsi tempest.... It also looked like there were problems with the monitors... Still, not the mess it could have been given the circumstances; matching a modular to two drummers and not to mention all the other sounds/textures that radiohead utilise
1:56 Phill loses rhythm. All hope is lost.
daddy chill
Thom is incredibly into his songs, he's always pissed when even the tiniest thing is off.
It's like thom is possessed by a music spirit and he's merely an interpreter ❤️
if thom stops dancing during idioteque, you know you fucked up
I was there when this happened. Totally thought it was the end of the show, but luckily they came back out for an encore (and the obligatory Everything In Its Right Place)
Colin is the only person on earth, to be allowed to touch Jonny's hair.
Hahaha,Colin really mad at jonny
This actually happened in his show in Perú, but Thomo was more patient this time and said, "This sometimes happen. But, it's ok" :)
As someone who hasn’t yet listened to idioteque, I didn’t even notice anything wrong which just goes to show that Radiohead can fuck up all they want and it’ll still sound great to most peoples ears.
Funny thing is noone would have noticed
Ed, Colin and Phil: ah shit, here we go again.
i think it’s really funny when thom started dancing and then slowly stops while looking at jonny trying to fix the tempo and then he just raises his arms completely pissed off
SHOW MUST GO ON...WHAT A BABY
I agree. Thom is an idiotheque. A big one.
The show did go on. They took a moment to regroup and came back out for another set.
+Sindrome Stendhal he's just a perfectionist
Literally "WTF, Richard?"
I love Thom's perfectionism... Saw him start and stop Black Swan about four times at a Latitude Festival secret set, getting more and more wound up as he couldn't get the sound he wanted
They've played this song countless times since Kid A (ten years), I don't think Thom was as worked up about it as everyone is assuming.
That Radiohead style "drop" is so sick
And it still sounds incredible...
Is not Jonny's fault, a band is all of them, everything that happens is everybody responsability but the Tom's attitud is on him only
nooo jonny my poor baby boy :’(((
you dont understand, this is about musical perfection and total enthusiasm
We love you, Jonny Greenwood ❤️😉
I love how johnny accidentally made something that would be played in a nightclub lol

2:10 lmao this shit is so funny
wow i didn't notice this at the show either (i also missed thom forgetting the words to paranoid android- i just thought he was having the crowd sing that part). idioteque sounded strange but i thougth they walked off b/c it was the last song before the encore not b/c thom got pissed.
Jonny fixed that at 2:05 back into the rhythm... unfortunately, too late for Thom:D
aw :(
all the people have mistakes and have a bad day sometimes poor jonny but it's part of the life

*F A S T E R J O N N Y*
I'm sure thom was just really frustrated, it seems like every time they play this song live something goes wrong, and Thursday and Friday in newark were no exceptions :/
this type of thing happens a lot while playing idioteque, I've seen a few videos, I think Thom has just got so sick of the midi and software not working, no wonder he gave up!
The Wrath of Thom....He's getting pretty old to be doing that. Innocence isn't lost upon Jonny. Yay!
lmao they handled this so gracefully
Idioteque is such a difficult track to play live, I’d get that
Thom always told jonny to go faster he's just doing what he is asked Thom.
Jonny :( Thom was so mean about it
Dont worry he apologised
It's not like they were walking off the stage being divas and ending the concert short! This was the end of the first set regardless, so either way-- they'd be walking off the stage at the end of this song.
2:11 everything's gonna be ok little bro'
I can understand this. In every band there is a moment when you get mad at the guy who plays the giant box full of dials.
It's working now Johny, leave it alone!
Not enough cowbell
I dont know what you are talking about but usually when a musician points up confused its because the monitors are real low or get lost in the mix live. These bands do play loud and need alot of clear volume thom probably couldnt hear himself or johnny got lost cause of his vocal break.
2:10 “Don’t worry Jonny I thought it was really good”
Fuck it! Yeees that's your answer for everything! Tattoo it on your forehead! Your revolution is over, Mr. Yorke. Condolences! The bums lost! My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir.
