Your father is correct. I was there during the era. JSU, Alcorn, UAPB..etc...were no match for them. The older SWAC bands know it. It goes in cycles. I can remember when Alcorn used to copy our warmups. JSU only had about 160 members or so...and UAPB...a total mess. The Alabama universities had to aplly to become a member of the SWAC. Valley's time is coming again.
mrkindness1, you're right, they were very good back in the day. By the way, does anyone know how many band members did Valley have in the late 1970s and early 1980s?
@Mrkindness1, so much wishful dreaming in the world. MVSU has ALWAYS been sorry. Yes they marched corpstyle like my high school band and we hated it. U crazy if u thought MVSU band was better than JSU or Alcorn. No one EVER wanted to play against MVSU in the band. Valley State band was horrible as hell. So get it right. MVSU band was corpstyle playing concert shit and NOBODY EVER went to see them. The fans came to see JSU or ASU ONLY because we liked bands that jammed.
Were you aware of the fact that MVSU'S band, under the direction of Mr. Russell Boone, was the first HBCU band to be invited and marched in the Tournament of Roses parade.?...TWICE. Did you know that MVSU BAND won 1st place in the Braniff Airlines Battle of the Bands in 1973. Oh yes, they beat out Southern, UAPB, GRAMBLING, and Texas Southern. Yep, Valley took that prestigious corps style marching style in there and placed first. Okay, getting back to the Tournament of Roses. What other University Marching Band in the state of Mississippi has ever been invited? I'll WAIT!!!!!
I gotta show some love to the Valley. They were down for a long time but, they are definitely improving a great deal.
Finally they chopping love that march hope they continue to use it
