Rakim is the greatest
@@rakim2730 I said one of. Rakim is the greatest but they're other great artist as well.
Iwilltakeyourlifewithaplasticknife Rakim is overrated.
MrCactus People overrate him too much which is why he never caught my interest.
@@Zxlxya You can't overrate someone who revolutionised the art of rhyming. 99% of the people you love wouldn't exist without him. This is a fact, not an opinion.
Now you can say you don't like his style, you may not even like his music. But to call someone overrated without knowing their importance, is stupidity on a level that can't be explained.
Rap has changed and will continue to do so. There was a time when it was ever evolving and now its become rather stagnant. No one is trying to take it further. However over 35 years ago, Rakim did just that. He changed the way people would rhyme forever. Its his template that was used to develop the artform. So like him or not, you can't deny his essential contribution to Hip-Hop.
This is hip-hop. This is rap. Just pure bars. The flows speak for themselves.

indeed
This was a amazing time for hip hop. The culture was literally transforming from gangster rap into a more relatable fun culture of creatives. 2006 was the year i graduated high school and its crazy how so much has changed. This was the beginning of corporations capitalizing off sneakers and japanese street wear became super popular too. I love watching hip hop evolve and i cant wait to see what the next generation is going to do.
Facts 💯🎯
There has always been a hip hop scene that steered clear from gangster rap. Think De La Soul or A Tribe Called Quest.
They started blowing up now, but ive been on city moegue, nascar aloe, and lil darkie for the past 4 years. Its sad they're not an intimate part of my life anymore, I listened to them when they were getting less than 50k monthly listeners, but at the same time, out of anyone I listen to they deserve the millions of views they get now. Just a damn shame i didnt get to see a show before they both blew up
When life was simpler 😫🤦🏾♂️
Lupe describes my journey with skateboarding so vividly in this song. I met many personalities through it, this song makes me tear up every-time because I think about those days, the innocence, I even remember the morning I first heard this track skating through the neighborhood with my homies. This hits hard because my the majority of my crew has passed on.
These days I skate alone, it’s a little bit hard for me to make friends on a deeper level because I’m so desensitized to death and passing of so many people I shared many memories with. But everyday I push forward and commemorate my life for those who didn’t have the chance to. Although it wasn’t where i thought or where we thought we would be, it’s a life man. This comment is for y’all.
Beautiful comment man.

Kool g rap notorious for his storytelling. One of the best imo
Amen! Well said.
The imagery is especially meaningful to me because I recognize all these places. At 0:19 he's sitting on the front step of Uprise skate shop, where I've bought ALL my fucking decks, and the shot at 0:25 is the Puerto Rican Promenade, where my fucking house is. I live on that block.
The thing that gets me is he tells a coming-of-age story and TWO love stories - for his passion and his woman - and the same time. Crazy.
This is my jam. Impossible not to be happy when I listen to this.

Instant classic. You still in Chicago?
This song isn't really about skateboarding. It's more about finding something (like skateboarding) to only for a moment escape from the misery in the life of the boy in the story.
Well said brother
I feel like if you take any Lupe song at face value you're not really trying hard enough.
You could also associate the "dream-like" life of living free to drug addiction and selling drugs.
Could be that the boy Lupe talks about it a kid who fell into drugs early on in his life and later met a chick who was addicted too.
Getting chased off by security guards as they slept on benches and public spaces.
We can put anything to fit that theme.

It's sad man. Even then, only a few appreciate the realness. The rest of these kids are I'll informed and even when you put some real stuff in front of them, they trash it.
As much as I love this song. hip hop was still "dead" and fans argued about it. Don't forget "snap yo fingaz" was around and other bubble gum shit. If you disagree with me that's cool but that just shows that nothing has changed in hip hop. Louder perhaps but people still argue about the same crap. When you think about it, this song is a great metaphor for life. 🤔 You "kick" at life when it puts heavy obstacles in your way, since legs are the largest muscle groups within the human body. If you are in a leadership role, at times you will "push" your personal wants & desires to the side in order for the greater good, i.e., caring for your family & community as a whole. During the moments when life is smooth & chill, you are able to "coast" and enjoy the feeling of a cool breeze on your face.
