  • This has been quite the week.
After days of working with Big Mama, I thought we had turned a corner... however, turns out it was Mother Nature doing the work, not me.
She ended up going into premature labour.
I've been scrambling around for answers on this tiring issue, and feeling discouraged that nothing we've tried has worked and we are still combatting pregnancy toxemia in the flock.
Things got a whole lot worse when I randomly sampled some ewes and found THREE more with increased ketone levels.
    I am panicking now.

Sandi, I know it probably doesn't help with the frustration of preg tox, but I for one am intensely grateful that you have been so open about the struggle. I had my first case of preg tox this past lambing season and I couldn't get in touch with my vet. Because you have been so open about it I was able to notice the signs early and start treating her before the vet even called me back the next day. I managed to save her and one of her 3 lambs and I have no doubt that if you hadn't showed what the signs were and how you treat it, I would have lost both. So while I can empathize with how awful it is, I just wanted to say thank you.

It utterly breaks my heart 😞 to see Our Dear Sandy 😍 beating herself up so badly 😔
She can't see that there was ABSOLUTELY NOTHING more she could have done to prevent this ✋
It's a 'be grateful we found it now' kind of situation that is a normal part of an evolving knowledge base for a skill.
Hopefully, she will dive into the solution & cease lamenting the cause🙏 🤞😉😍
(I KNOW she will all about the solution ✋)

Sandy, the way you pay attention and know your ewes is wonderful to get to witness. You are anything but an embarrassment you are truly something that all people should try to be. Please be kinder to yourself but I get it. No one would ever come close to how hard I always judged myself. Lesson I learned, give the same grace and kindness to yourself as you would to others. So happy big Momma turned the corner for her own life but saddened that her babies didn’t survive.

Hi Sandi! Mum and I are retired goats farmers, and we watch every video and compare and feel your frustrations and victories every time we watch. Please don’t ever feel embarrassed at the curve balls, that is truly what they are, that’s farming. To be a farmer you have to be a strong human mentally, physically and emotionally. And you are all those things. Thank you for sharing with us and taking us along your journey. We love you ❤

The weather has been wild, and in general, things have been very busy for you and your family. You give your flock an incredible life and top notch care. Its not an assessment of your care or skill. Remember, nature is gonna be nature. You are doing incredible things. You got this, i promise . Nothing more could have been done & that doesn't really matter anyway 👍
She knows it now & is a ninja about fixing it 🤩😍
I kept thinking the variable that may have stacked the deck against her is the contents of the feed 🤔🤷
I imagine, how a crop does & what values the end product has, varies quite a bit 🤷
Some crops or portions of crops may have less sugar & that would completely throw off the end ration.
NO POSSIBLE WAY our dear Sandy could have controlled that ✋

Your care and dedication to these animals is immeasurable Sandi . As stressful as it is, do not beat yourself up over it . We know and see that you go to the ends to see that these animals get the best care . It is the judgment of others I think that cause you to say you are embarrassed and you need to stop acknowledging the " armchair experts" that think they have the right to judge. I have been here since the beginning and as a former small scale beef farmer I feel your pain .
    Keep doing you! ❤

First of all…..big hugs to you. The love that you have for your flock is awesome. Though they are not pets (except for a select few), you care and tend to them like they are.
I sure that not a lot of people might catch the signs of problems cropping up as fast as you do. The fact that your vet knows you and how you care about your ewes is amazing!
Keep up the good work and know that we are here for you to talk to when you need to express how you are feeling. Lots of love to you.

First off, I love your videos and look forward to them. I also don't think you have anything at all to be embarrassed about. You do a fantastic job with your sheep. You love them and it shows. I don't think most of us ever know everything there is to know about our animals. We are always learning and that's one of the many many things you should be proud of yourself for. You are always willing to learn more and ask for advice. That says a lot about you and your love for your flock. You are amazing!

I always amazes me how people will tailgate - if I change lanes to let them pass, they zoom by and proceed to tailgate the next vehicle they encounter 🤷‍♀️ Love it when I catch up to them at lights, even better passing them in traffic !

Sandi, every rancher, farmer and Shepard has bad things happen. Ranchers and shepards have bears, wolves and coyotes take animals. Mark has a lot of worries with the farm side. Please try not to let the loss of the 3 lambs get you down. (easier said than done). We are here to support you and look forward to the chaos of the next lambing round. I'm praying that the change in feed helps. Remember that no matter how long you are in the sheep business, you still have things to learn as things change. Prayers for you and your family.

Sandi, you did great by realizing that your feed rations needed updated. Sounds like you should be updating weights and birth rates at least annually with your feed guy. And separating the grain from the rest of the feed should get all the ewes on a better path. You are making progress! This is good!
