We were just in Lititz, PA yesterday. Great small town. We goto Amish Country often Intercourse, PA, Ronks, PA, Bird in Hand, PA. Just to drive around to see the farms and stores. All great places to visit and great food! If you ever get a chance go eat the buffet at Dienner's Country Restaurant in Ronks, PA. AMAZING food.
Thanks for the journey. When we lived in NW Jersey, we would visit Lititz/Lancaster County every month and half to two months. The town is great around Christmas. We’ve been to the Bulls Head Inn, Wilbur Chocolates..both the old and new locations, Candyology..great selection of old time favorites, Roasters Coffee, A Tea Affair, Paw Prints, Zumaker Alley, etc…. It was sad to see JoBoys Brew pub go. We enjoyed feeding the ducks at LSP and the Christmas Tree Lighting. Since moving out of the area, we haven’t been back a couple of years.

I lived in Lititz as a child from 1951-1958, long before all of the trendy shops came in. It was still sleepy and undeveloped in 1985 when a few of the street scenes in the movie Witness were filmed there. All they had to do was put 1930's era cars on the street and cover the sign for the General Sutter Inn. My favorite memory was coming out of the (old) elementary school on some days when the whole town smelled like chocolate. I miss the town I grew up in, but none of us can stop time. I never knew scenes from witness were filmed there. I'll have to watch it and look for the particular scenes. I was never there before 2022 and I had to admit I like the trendy shops and restaurants. The city of Lancaster is 9 mi south. So there's cheaper housing there and even closer to the town. But yeah people who make minimum wage generally can't afford to go out and eat dinner in restaurants as much as people who make more money. Places that are nice are where people want to go and move to so prices of housing tends to go up
Went to Lancaster, PA for two days. All stores close by 6 and the only State wine and liquor store closes at 9 pm, the only place to buy such items. In the center part of town, everyone is off the streets by 6 pm. Amish country is off all around but how much desserts, pretzels and uncooked meats can you buy and use especially if you are living in a hotel room. Amtrak station to NYC and Pittsburgh is in town. Even the Walmart Superstore was only partially occupied by customers on a weekday night at 7pm. Not a real "happening place" like NYC or Philadelphia. Thought that I wanted to "Retire" there. Not anymore
Thanks for commenting. Lancaster is more laid back from Philly or Nyc for sure, but that's what some people want... Fields and grass and peacefulness. Which you can't get in the big cities. Laid back is for me but understand not for everyone. I want to retire in thr Bahamas or Panama. More of a beach person. Heading to Bahamas next week so check out that video coming soon. @@AlongForTheJourney Been to Bermuda. Not impressed. Panama is very Hot, Humid and Buggy although English is widely spoken there as there is a large American retiree community. Caribbean is out as Global Warming is increasing the frequency and destructiveness of Hurricanes as well as rising Ocean levels. Certain American areas like the South, Florida, California and the SouthWest have droughts, large fires, tornados and flooding as a result of this too. You might try certain west coast sections of Mexico, although you do need to learn the Spanish language. Read a story of an American couple who retired there, was "befriended" by a Mexican banker who did their financial transactions. He emptied out their 1 Million dollar bank account, disappeared and the Mexican bank refused to make up for their lost funds. They are now completely poor.
That sucks about losing a million dollars. Yeah it does seem like the list of good places to retire is dwindling fast. Myrtle Beach is another potential option for us. Low taxes.

A.m.. granted most of them close at 10:00 p.m. during the week and a lot of them are open until midnight on the weekend. Late enough for me in retirement when that time comes out
