Gene Reynolds directed this episode, but I detected his touch in some of the dialog. In particular, the thing about capturing lightning bugs in a jar with small holes in the top so that the insects could breathe. I think this was a common thing to do back in the fifties. I did it myself along with a lot of the boys and girls I grew up with. I am sure he did it himself.
Small towns were shunned during the 70s 80s. Now, retiring in small towns is trendy. The population has soured so much lately that small towns are very rare. Traffic is a nightmare everywhere. The quality of life is gone.
I think what you call a small town and what I call small are different. You might be speaking of small city"s, I live in a really small town, about 400 people, but you are sure right about one thing, The Quality of life like it used to be...Is Gone.
The guy talking to Billie at the 14:07 mark is Grant Goodeve from Eight is enough! I'm sure of it! But his name isn't listed in the Credits OR on imdv.
Love how Lou treated the greedy relative at auction, lol. "You want the car & lamps?" "Why yes!""Me too, I hope you outbid everyone" 😄

I did that as well in the 1980s growing up on Long Island New York. Every kid does it. It’s not being cruel. They’re just bugs.
capturing the lightning bugs was great in the 70's and 80's
I did it in the 70s but we would set them free.
The three of then made Billie so quilts over doing what every kid d8es with fireflies.
If "Life in a Northern Town" was a Lou Grant episode instead of a song.
Halfway through this episode I asked myself why am I watching this, this is boring, then near and at the end I got it. Now I'm all verklempt.
okay, I will make sure and watch it now. thanks
@D Sullivan "verklempt" is Nederlands/Dutch for Jammed.
@D Sullivan I'm from The Kingdom of The Netherlands, as such, Dutch/Nederlands is my native tongue. I don't care what Microsoft Bing says.
Hearing about the divorce from Edie being ten years back, and remembering that period on Mary Tyler Moore, I got very wistful.
Too bad it wasn't Minneapolis. He could've gone there to see what became of Mary.
Just as well he didn't, because by this time, Mary may have been in New York (after she married the senator).
I thought this " BACK HOME "episode was great.

Beth schneider, that was Anthony Costello. He looks fairly different than Grant Goodeve (Google their images; you'll see 😊).
Anthony Costello is a really good actor. They don't make them like him anymore
Donovan killed scorpions? Where did he grow up in the middle east?
I think they have them in the southwest, too.
The character of Donovan grew up in Hawaii
This episode was depressing as hell, too much melancholy ☹️
Billie misrepresenting a story. Nothing new there.
The Hospital took everything of my Grandmothers to satisfy Her 80k debt, left Us being billed instead of receiving Our inheritance.
😂
