Out of all things people say the Romans didn't know vesuvius was a volcano. It was only written in Pliny's diary which does not mean its true. I am sure the Romans were aware of the existence of Mount Vesuvius. But they were ignorant of what was to come in the future. Having no knowledge of Volcanoes, they were only used to little eruptions and lava flows. Although Vesuvius did not erupt for thousands of years, it still rumbled every now and then like every other volcano. I would disagree on the fact 'The romans were unaware of volcanoes' they were perfectly aware. and most of the population of Pompeii actually fled before the eruption started. because they believed Vesuvius was a dormant volcano. The Romans were unaware of Pyroclastic surges which made them think they had enough time to flee. Although they had only 18 hours to live when vesuvius erupted.
I called the pyroclastic surge a heatwave
The moral of this story, don't live with a volcano without a little protection.
