Norwegian Elkhounds are the greatest! I met my little buddy the day he was born; the breeder knew he would be something special even then. He came to live with me and his great-great-grandmother, who had been with me since her retirement from shows, when he was age four months. The older dog passed last year due to multiple health problems. Dash is now just a bit over four years. He knows how to work a crowd and makes friends everywhere he goes. He is welcome at the bank, the pharmacy, the home center, hardware store, just about everywhere I go. He loves everybody. And Smart? He's so smart, when the sign says "WET FLOOR", he does! Yeah, he's special!
Super!
I live on 12 acres on a spring fed lake in Northern, Mn. My elk hound, died 2/2018, best dog ever. One year my 14 point buck was too tough for me to eat, an old buck that was his diet his 11th and 12th year. I sure miss him and would love another, but like my dog I got old too.
@@Skylosswiatprzezpryzmat4ap My brother has a 60 acre farm. The sled dogs have a huge kennel. His yard dog is old and going blind. His brother takes care of the sled dog. but his springer can't even keep all the rabbits out of his yard. like me not having a good yard dog has allowed the deer and rabbits freedom to do as they like. I don't have rabbits but I've needed a live tap to catch the ground hogs. they seem to have moved after digging tunnels under the cherry trees. I filled with fish and filled in.
An adult rescue might be a good fit for you. I brought a seven-year-old dog home when my Mom was in failing health, and the dog settled right in with her and her caregivers. I now have a four-year-old (had him since he was four months), and I can't imagine life without an Elkhound.
@@5610winston I got mine at 4 months seemed someone else had him and returned him. the words come here, must have been repeated like snoring. Hey big dog worked when 'come here' was probably repeated over and over. He had his quirks but was the best dog ever. he never shit where I had to clean it up. I've known springer that would shit in your walk way so you would step in it. His manners were the best. Once he went for a run with the neighbors yellow lab and brought home a young porcupine It took me 4 hours to get all the quills out. My neighbor said he had to give his dog a tranquilizer, and was really pissed. He never ran off again.
I have a one year old Norwegian Elk Hound. Best boy ever. Sweet personality and very protective. He likes to sleep with me. He crawls on my back and goes to sleep. It was ok when he was little, but now he weighs 50 pounds.
About 2 weeks ago my back went out. As my wife was traveling with her sister in Europe I was completely alone. Just my baby Mojo and I. He sensed that something was wrong and stayed by my side. I was having back spasms laying on my couch. He sat next to me and wouldn't leave my side. He spent the entire day cuddled up to me until the spasms subsided. He is the most amazing boy ever. Of course after the spasms subsided he brought me his dinner bowl.
Yep. They're food motivated, all right. Moose (1998-2012) would pick up her feed dish as soon as I set it in the breakfast nook and carry it to my Mom's bedroom and nibble her kibble between Mom's bed and the La-Z-Boy where Mom's caregivers would sit. When Mom had minor strokes, Moose would alert and crawl up on the bed, nuzzling under a hand or foot on the affected side. Mom had resisted getting another dog when our first Elkhound died, but she and her caregivers recognized that Moose was an asset to her care. I got an adult dog from the same breeder in 2012, and she came to the hospice the day before Mom died. My boy Baldurdash is my boon (or should that be 'bone'?) companion; he loves going wherever I go, meeting with friends and new friends, working the crowd as skillfully as any social butterfly. One time when I still had Aani, I took her and Dash to the pharmacy where they met an elderly lady who hadn't seen an elkhound since she left Norway at the start of WW II. The lady, seated in her wheelchair, petted both dogs for nearly a half-hour while her granddaughter waited patiently. I gave the grand requested contact information for the breeder's kennel.
@@5610winston what an amazing story, thank you for that. My Mojo is the most loving dog I've ever owned. Every morning when I wake up he greets me with kisses and cuddles and is really excited that I'm awake. Last week I noticed that he wasn't eating his food that was in his bowel in the kitchen. I waited a few hours but it went untouched. As I said before I had put my back out a few days before and moving around was quite painful. Struggled to walk into the kitchen and again found that the food was untouched. I brought the bowl into the family room where my couch and heating pad were. I set the bowl of food down next to the couch and he started eating. I then realized that the reason he wasn't eating is because he didn't want to leave my side. After eating, he went outside through the doggy door. Within one minute he was back sitting next to me. He is a great source of joy to me and we are absolutely inseparable. As you know, Norwegian Elk Hounds are famous for barking. Yesterday he realized that I was better and able to get around. He wanted to play and apparently I wasn't moving fast enough. So he decided to bark at me. Now normal breeds would bark and then be done with it. Nope not my Moj. He stood in the dining room and barked for 37 minutes. Yup I timed him. Of course my laughing at him probably didn't help.
At the end of the video dog collars were presented. Do you make these? I liked to watch your video very much. It was very natural and very happy. I had Elkhounds as a child and they were the most friendliest dog anyone will ever get to meet or own.! Again, very nice video!!!

In anybody's book! So many people meet my boy and ask about the breed, sometimes about the breeder (I have her on speed dial since I board him with her). Remarks always center round his sweet demeanor, his good behavior (in public, anyhow), his up-beat temperament, his overall beauty, and his perfect size for an active family.
I was concerned about the plastic sheeting. My boy started chewing on a plastic water bottle the other night, and can't figure where he keeps finding them.
When they grow up, happy elkhounds part their hair when they wag their tails. The resulting patch of flattened fur is variously called a "nest" or "the butt dent".

What's with having them try laying/move around on different objects? The bottles and tops
Jay Lew It's a method of socialising so they won't be scared of these sounds and objects in the future, when people will adopt them.
