Great video! Question: I've been playing la güiera for a few months now in my church group. One of the band members mentioned about a tape that güieros place inside la güiera to give it a crispier sound. Have you heard anything about that?
The reason why we add a paper tape is simply to dampen the vibration that a naked guira makes when its brushed with the gancho. This damp method is not significant but it does help muffle the aftermath of creating friction with the frame of the guira =) Thanks for the question and support =)
Great question Juan. Nice to meet you.. You can get that foam padding from Sam ash music store or guitar center or ebay or any discent music store online that sells sound proofing material. I got mine in a studio in Dominican Republic
Absolutely no problem, the same to you and don't forget to share follow me on the socials and if you have any more questions please don't hesitate, as I'm here to help 👍🏾
Thanks so much, yep normal for it to vibrate and eco a bit,all normal. But if it's like an elongated eco you may wanna dampen that sound because sonically speaking you don't need it.
@@Dannyd135 sorry for getting back to you late my reply never got send idky. There's a high probability that the tin material LP uses is significantly different than mine. I use paper tape inside, and a foam
Excellent question, the foam is used inside to decrease the volume of the guira, if you want to silence it a little to avoid making it too loud. commonly use in the studio so that the mic does not pick up too much of its vibrations. it makes it sound more clear and clean... of course when playing live you are not gonna see it because the guira drowns under all the other instruments that are playing next to all at the same time. Is it necessary? Yes for recording is a must. But not for regular use and definitely don't use it if you are playing a live performance. I hope this helps.
what technique would you use if you cant turn your wrist completely? as in the palm of your hand does not line up with the front of your elbow when you turn it
@@johnguira I was born missing a muscle that allows that like in this video ua-cam.com/video/OU1fxuHSQ38/v-deo.html it just stays in place though my hand is able to bend up and down. I've been playing guira using basic drum stick techniques like drum strokes up and down while slightly moving the guira at the same time to do certain fills. To be honest I have more elbow motion when I'm playing and I'm finding it that without the rotating movement I run out of stamina faster compared to others and there's a certain gap of fills that can't be maintained due to the need of flexible rotation. What would you recommend as an alternative to play the guira without rotation of the wrist or a exercise that only involves moving the hand up and down o-o?
Gracias por tu pregunta y tu apoyo a mi canal. La guira que olles aqui esta equalizada osea que no esta cruda. =) si le pones brillo a tu guira cuando grabes talvez te sonaria como la mia =)
