As a son of Dunfermline, I love seeing videos about it. Thanks so much for showing the incredible architecture of the Abbey to the world. When I was at school, history gave me up as it was just about dates. Now, much older, I can begin to appreciate the history of the country. Keep up the great work.
I missed you Mr Fumey! I HAD NO IDEA YOU COULD HOLD A TUNE EITHER! Humorist, Historian, Singer: A TRIPLE THREAT! 😂
I knew Edith/Matilda's story, though from a more Norman perspective. This was such an entertaining retelling!
As Queen of England, Matilda was a generous benefactor. She founded the leper hospital of St Giles in Holborn, and the priory of Holy a trinity at Aldgate, and she built the first public lavatory and public bath in the city of London. She also patronised writers and musicians, she was particularly fond of music and generous to good church musicians,
No one could tell this story like you Bruce with that wit and humour. Love it.
Dear Bruce, I could listen to you talking about history for HOURS! And the fact that I visited that magnificent abbey just a few weeks ago makes this video even more interesting! Loved it!! And the Abbey is absolutely amazing!
🤗
Yay, Edith! I'm a descendant of Malcolm Canmore and St. Margaret 😊
You rock, Bruce!
Aye Bruce, yer no turning 60. I must admit I was tempted to once but chose 22 instead, and it was the happiest fifty years of my life. Have a great birthday, and if I win the lotto, I'll come shout yer. Till then, keep them coming; I love yer yarns.
Hi Bruce, tremendous video, as always!😊 I love how you tie the bits of history together that the school book writers deem unworthy of knowledge into something that suddenly makes the history make sense! I knew where David came from. I didn't totally understand why he got the Scottish throne until now! It's no wonder that history is one of the least liked subjects in school: they don't teach it right! Correctly by dates alone, yes. Right, NO! This poor churchmouse appreciates you filling in those gaps every day! Thank you!
Love these videos, Bruce. I was so pleased to meet you when you were in Melbourne.
Wonderful take on a rather under appreciated woman's role in Scottish history.
She is wonderful! OMG! Your choice of words and pictures you paint! These people became so vividly real to me!
Thanks! As an American, that absolutely adores your channel I certainly wish I could come to your birthday party! Perhaps a pint on the old lady!
Last time I was this early, Edward still had short shanks... 😂
Edit to add, love your videos Bruce, just passed your channel onto my sons best friend aka my adopted son since he loves history.
Truly amazing history of Scotland !! Love this video thank you sir
@@ScotlandHistoryTours very welcome! Can not wait for awesome videos !! 🇺🇸🏴
Great video tying some threads from Scottish and English history together. Also some beautiful views of my adopted home town.
That pic of Sycamore Gap, on Hadrian's Wall, caused a pang.
This was fascinating! I knew nowt about it. Cheers!
Hi Bruce, just back from your show in Dunfermline - we had a great time!
I thoroughly enjoy your videos, Bruce. I have visited Rufus’ stone in the New Forest a number of times (I may be a Geordie but Mum’s from Lymington - that’s another story) and the Sir Walter Tyrell pub serves good food. Keep up the good work 🌞
Grew up near the Rufus stone in the New Forest (around about where he was supposedly shot) and now live near Dunfermline. I guess I’m a thousand years too late but I’m following this story about
Thanks for providing another interesting and important piece of British Isles history. And also for giving an example of the often neglected role that women played in shaping that history.
Thank you Bruce, for shedding light on all this great Scottish history.
She sounds like an amazing woman, the kind of ferociously intelligent, spirited, strong-willed, probably beautiful women that I always admire. The kind for whom the concept of "other people guaranteeing women's rights to her" would have been a flat insult. Because she didn't need anyone else to do stuff for her. Thanks for a great story!
@benjaminlasseter, never forget that rights like those you are talking about should also be extended to those who aren't strong enough to stand up for them. I'm having to stand up for mine in the States right now and it makes me sick to think of how many elderly women are probably getting cheated like they're trying to do to me because they don't understand what they're entitled to by law! Men who don't have education could be having the same problem too! Does that change the equation?
Nobody should have to waste their energy fighting for human rights as if it was a tournament win. All women should have access without fighting and proving they deserve it.
Love your videos Bruce, love the stories and the beautiful landscapes (from Perth, Western Australia).
Awsome video again bruce. Totaly helped me unscramble my scottish history with your vids and still learnin fi them always a new bit of the jigsaw in every episode. 👍🏴🏴🏴🏴✌️
He dropped her off at the nunnery - age 6, although possibly younger - then shows up 13 (or 7) years later to denigrate everything she'd learned and become... and I thought my dad was a schmuck!
Hi Bruce!! thank you for another informative video :D
Just visited Dunfermline a few weeks ago and it was great
Brilliant presentation over top yet informative great story telling
GoodMornin' Bruce from Canada
Morning! Are you coming to see one of my shows in Canada? Some of the links are up now. Have a look www.brucefummey.co.uk/shows.aspx
While I would love to see these places for myself, it’s good enough to watch your videos. Come for the architecture, stay for your humorous and informative stories 🥰
Another great episode Bruce.Oh the twists and turns of history of the Scots.
This was an excellent video as always. I thought I saw you had a video on a woman named Black Agnes, who turned an English army with less than a dozen men at arms. I just heard about the story in passing but I swear I saw that you had a video on it. (Dunbar Castle maybe???? I can't remember exactly.)
Not only do I have a video about her, she's part of my live show
@@ScotlandHistoryTours Thanks a lot Bruce. Did you do it a while back? I went through the 'videos' list but didn't find it.
Great video as always. I have learned so much from you, thank you.
Hey Bruce! Come visit Kansas! Amazing place!!
Let me tell you a story Bruce's videos should be taught in history classes at school brilliant ☺️
An other grate story, See I told you fantastic people come from my birth place. Ps the wife still talks about our meeting in the Abbey. Many thanks. 😊
I love your stories Bruce! But I do get lost and confused among all the names and people... I wish for a family tree diagram or a map and names showing arrows pointing where they were going or coming. But that's probably just me. I've never been great at studying/learning history.
Having names thrown at me confuses me as well; it’s not just you.
A simple diagram or chart would be nice, especially if some have the same name.
This is quite comprehensive: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Family_tree_of_Scottish_monarchs
@@Ulfcytel a _simple_ one would be nice lol
I do not envy genealogists their careers paths.
Is Edith "waltzing Matilda"? Or is that song about someone else? Great video Bruce.
"I'm bilingual" 😂 Wish we could join you on your 60th Bday tour. It'll be my 60th too. Alas, we just recently visited Scotland in September. So unless I have a rich uncle I don't know about, that's gonna be out of my budget. Great vlog.
@@ScotlandHistoryTours Well we do live in Minnesota. To go to Winnipeg would be like driving from London to Edinburgh. Doable.
Hi
watched Bruce’s item on border reivers, this brought back a memory of a series I enjoyed called the Borderers. They had a very cool keep and Ian Cuthbertson was in it.
Thank You.....
Edith/Matilda is my 26th great-grandmother.
Ooft. What a grim tale. That poor wee lassie. She got the last laugh though!
Some Abbesses had control of huge estates and property prior to the destruction of the monasteries.
Another fantastic video just one question was that a Moor influence on the buildings in this video?
There are many different stages of the buildign from the originally Norman to the 19th Century
Years later when William had the entire population of Yorkshire massacred, I'll bet that they had wished they'd been part of Scotland instead of England. As for toff and tosser, I'm told that the terms are pretty much interchangeable.
Matilda was certainly one hell of a great woman, worthy of being a role model for girls to admire.
Wilton, sounds familiar, then you say Salisbury, that's my home town (city lol
Great video! Unnecessary slam to the current BRF, tho.
Did I really hear tjhose bells playing "The Campbells are Coming"?
Got to look up Dunfermline to find out more about those musical bells! Edit: just did - info on the Abbey’s website says those bells are played by someone sitting at a keyboard!
yo,, back at it again I see .... really enjoy your videos .... have a good day,, sir ✌
@@ScotlandHistoryTours true enough .... I'm thinking you did something to your hair .... trim maybe
Another great story Bruce, but if she was born in Scotland to Malcolm Canmore and Queen Margaret how is she a Saxon ? Was it because she took the veil ( or not) in an English monastery ?
Her mum Margaret was a Saxon princess. That's why Malcolm wanted to marry her. That's also why Henry wanted to marry Edith. Of course she's also the daughter of Malcolm but let me have a snappy title eh?
A few months ago, I was looking at my ancestry. I seem to remember having seen King David 1st of Scotland on my charts. If I'm right about that, you told me a tale of family history.
Okay, after searching through my family line, it's not David I'm descended through. It's Queen Matilda herself! Bruce, you just covered family history for me! 😊😊😊
I'm like a scratched record why hasn't Mr Bruce got a history channel on TV untill then I will not watch TV for Scottish histoy ☘️👌Thats me saying my piece.
@@ScotlandHistoryTours I do but the pretending they don't know me so what I've said is I'm going to let you do my ancestors path won't that be fun😆☘️🧚♂️👌
Man, I wish I could come there and party with you all for your 60th. (P.S. those bells ringin' must've been drivin' you nuts).
I need a Bruce foomy (sorry if it's spelled wrong) version of the sound of music as a full movie
I wish all man kind a future of kindness and carring. We human have so little time now
All I see from the Adventure tour link is an itinerary, and no way to get costs or other specifics? Hm. I have never done such a trip, so maybe I just don't get it.

Damn we look good for almost 60, don’t we?
I’ll get there 11-30-24
I knew the story of Edith/Matilda. I always wondered how convents and monasteries raised very young children. Were there nannies or were some members of the religious community charged with nursemaid duties? The death of William Rufus has always been a subject of debate because some thought the king was assassinated to pave the way for Henry I. Supposedly, Edith/Matilda was beautiful .Edith/ Matilda had two children, but her flagrantly unfaithful husband fathered many illegitimate children. Edith/ Matilda was the maternal grandmother of Henry II and, therefore, the ancestress of the current Royal Family.
Nun's, unfotunately, seem to be dying breed. The Franciscan Sisters worked in the roughest part of my hometown and did good works for those in the most need. Sure, there are always things that can be pointed at. Brides of Christ ? What a title !
Blimey . you could knock me down with a thistle. !
I'd sure like to attend this Birthday bash. 😊 But life in the usa makes it unaffordable this time. Enjoy all!!! 🎉✌️🤓
You want to try life in the UK. We're all struggling to keep Jeff Bezos in wives😜
@@ScotlandHistoryTours Exactly supporting billionaires is a full time task.
My sister, Matilda, is bigger than me,
She lifts me up quite easily,
I can't lift her,
I've tried and tried,
She must have something heavy inside.

@@myparceltape1169 Surprisingly tough, and packing quite a punch for her age.
Do the Saxons have any decendants? Bruce and what name do they go by please mate?
I don't understand the question, but previous questions suggest you already have the answer you want
@@ScotlandHistoryTours Morning Bruce, to clarify, I have been told on many ocassions that Anglo Saxons were one of the tribes that made up the English Nation so what happened to the ones that settled in other parts of the UK did their decendants remain of english decent and are they regarded as English or not?
@@ScotlandHistoryTours I realise I am a totally confused person as far as history is concerned.
We are all a mix of all sorts of folks. Picts are still there in the genetic makeup of Scotland, as are Vikings, Britons and Angles, Flemish, Norman etc
@@ScotlandHistoryTours Now I do agree with you on that one Bruce , Its just the way my gray cells work or dont work, I do enjoy your videos.
Scotland will be freed soon!
St Anselm of Canterbury, author of the Ontological Proof of God's Existence, has a walk-on part here which confirms his prowess at "reverse engineering." He was a master at proving what he wanted to find.
Solution to the Maria problem: you see her Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and I'll see her Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
History is made either by people with big heads or people with big ideas... and of course it takes the conformity of those who are too lazy or daft to do otherwise.
Need to edit that Hadrian's wall pic. Some idgits cut down the sycamore.
I know. There's no way I'm going all the way down there to film a less interesting picture
I'm a real descendant of Robert the Bruce. Or so my mother told me! Can't say I know another thing about it! Maybe it's so! Being nearly 70 I can't say it matters much to me!
Any chance of doing a story that’s from the west of Scotland??? They all seem to originate from everywhere else. You are missing some great historical stories..
A'reyt Bruce. So King Edward was part Scottish royalty and Robert the Bruce was some Norman toffer. I saw a song about that. Normans and Saxons and Northumbrians all just English. Nun-sense?
Good video as always though.
