- Vipin is a 15-year-old student. His biggest dream is to perform in costume with Rama Chakyar, one the very few Kutiyattam gurus in the whole India.
Recognized by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity, Kutiyattam is a traditional and very codified art form taking its roots from ancient Sanskrit theatre.
To take part in one of India’s oldest living traditions, an actor must face ten to fifteen years of rigorous training. A single act can last for days and a complete performance up to a month…
Follow Vipin as he perpetuates this fragile custom at the Kalamandalam School, where performing arts are taught.

Very proud...that the next generation is still learning and carrying the culture...
Hi, I am from kerala. Thanks for your documentary.
I think it documented many years ago
What a privilege to see this. Arts training is trying and demanding for its own reward and builds character. I was very successful in business because of my early professional career in the arts.

Some may not understand it, as I've seen at least one person below express, but this is art, not torture. Much like ballet, it takes grueling training and much hardship on the body to perform correctly. As a religious service, it tells the stories of their religion to children, the illiterate, and those who previously were disallowed near temples (such as Untouchables and other "Backwards" castes). Like a passion play, it tells these stories in an easily digestible manner. Acting brings an actor into the world of these characters, where they imagine themself stepping the same steps, feeling the same grievances. The hope is that the audience sees these characters "alive", and feels a closer connection to them, as this is their religion. Not understanding their religious beliefs, you won't think anything is worth doing. If you dance for a God you believe in, pain and difficulty is nothing.

Like the kuttiyattam the documentary its self a fine peace of art!! Marvelous

Though I don't know about this theatre form, I have few things to point out in this documentary. First mention of Bollywood while showing a Malyalam film is wrong, in the sense that Bollywood is the name of Hindi film industry. In India nearly every state has it's own film industry. The one of Kerela is called Mollywood. Second, the Ezhava caste don't traditionally deal with collection of palm oil. They were/are small time labourers, small cultivators, toddy tappers etc. Thirdly, Kerela is NOT a conservative state at all. In fact it is one of the most liberal states in India. I don't mean to that it doesn't have misogyny, patriarchy etc. but by general Indian standard it's quite good. Drawing such conclusions just because men n women are segregated in bus is not correct. Lastly, it would have been better if some Malyalam song was played when the maestro is shown offering prayers at his ancestral house. Maybe some Bengali song is played in the background. Overall a good documentary!
Cool.
good breakdown and corrections
Damn fam you went inn
Thank you for saying this because there was so much that was poorly executed in this documentary. False information included. You beat me to it. The random non Malayalam music playing was such a joke and shows their lack of research and understanding.

Good
Music choices were extremely unfitting and inaccurate mind you none of them were even in Malayalam and pronunciation of words by narrators was horrendous. Thank you for this wonderful documentary, highlighting this most rich and oldest worldwide theatre performing tradition and art form, regardless of the massive errors of the production team.
Amazing, had no idea this existed.

If possible, someday please cover North Sentinel Islands ( India ) . It's still a mystery.
Also Sidds ( Africans ) in Jambur Gujarat India.

What the hell is this torture and for what! such a waste of life
You should understand that this is art in its highest form and it comes with alot of discipline.
@@monirodacosta6074 I don't see it entertaining, it looks like demon worshiping rituals. You need to question your culture do not accept everything like a powerless sheep.
Probably much more fulfilling than your wasted ignorant life
You’re wasting your life if you think these art forms of highest beauty are a waste.
