  • In this video, I remove and replace the instrument cluster on a 1999 Lexus ES 300. This vehicle had the speedometer quit working. So the first move was to replace the speed sensors. No change. This transmission did not have a vehicle speed sensor, so some research found that the speedometer worked through the ABS system that reported to the ECM and then to the cluster (combination meter). Pulled codes for ABS and found 3 of the 4 wheel speed sensors malfunctioning. Replaced all 4. RH front wheel speed sensor reports speed to speedometer. No change. The speed sensor on the cluster is the white box mounted to its rear. Junk yard find, provided the replacement.
*** This swap did not immediately solve the problem at first either. Upon removing it again one of the hardshell/plug wire retaining clips fell out. It was a slim, nearly flat white plastic strip. Apparently this piece wiggled its way lose and created a poor connection. Snapped the wire pin retainer back in, and checked all of the rest, and reinstalled original cluster, and the speedometer worked.
FYI: all 1MZ-FE engines are not the same in how they provide information to the speedometer. It took hours of research to figure out this mystery.
    I hope this helps someone.
Disclaimer: I'm not a mechanic and do as I do at your own risk. This is just how I did it.

That is right. All were changed, but found that not to be the issue here. It was an unexpected education for me to learn that some versions go through the cluster. I appreciate your input. Thanks for watching.
