I live in Staffordshire and ran 26km across the Staffordshire Moorlands today, what’s great about the Moorland is I can feel totally alone as though I’m on an uninhabited planet yet only be a few miles away from home. Many of my friends and family have never seen our town from deep in the wilderness of the Moors. It gives a totally different perspective only few are lucky enough to experience.
I'm an environmental researcher working on peat bogs and a runner, too. Love how you depicted a runner's perspective on what many think of as a wasteland. Great video!
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it. I must admit my knowledge is pretty limited, other than how important they are to the ecosystem, and from personal experience how wet and deep they can be 😉
Awesome! I did this with some friends in the summer. We hiked North to South - took the whole day. Also completed the 55 mile Ten Tors in 2019, so I've spent many hours exploring it. Love it more every time I go up there!
The best thing about the Moor is that you can feel so remote in an untouched environment, it's then you realise how insignificant you really are (and your problems). Great video ✌️
Well, it's not really untouched. It was a forest until Henry III chopped it all down...
Great production and representation of Dartmoor. Certainly not a place to be taken lightly as you have shown. I ran 25 miles across Dartmoor to propose to my girlfriend, unknowingly waiting in Princetown. Despite growing up here, the weather turned so fast to thick fog and rain and genuinely feared for my life. Luckily I knew the area but wasn’t far off calling out the services!
The love you have for this place is so pure and visible. Thanks for sharing it, I added Dartmoor to my "never ending" list of places on the planet I want to run. Cheers!
Thank Roberto, yes it holds a special place in my heart. Hope you get to experience it one day. 👍
Great quality and engaging ultra video! I’ve been running ultra for years and believe you cracked the code on these the same way as Billy Yang. Keep at it brother!
Great watch and really inspirational. Sometimes we can get drawn to places far away when incredible places surround us everyday.
Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed it and found it interesting. Cheers.
Another amazing film from you! The cinematography and b-roll in this is simply stunning.
Brilliant. Spent time training on Dartmoor with the Royal Marines..bleak but beautiful and unforgiving at times..enjoyed this 👌 👍
Beautiful shots. I'm from dartmoor and there is no finer geography
Awesome film! Brings back some memories from running it myself last year.
Only discovered this channel yesterday and I’m binge watching so many of these videos. Great stuff 👍🏼
Just wonderful! Thank you for taking the time to put this together. My friend and I ran from Ivybridge to Belstone but took it over 2 days which was great but I’d love to crack it in one……one day!
That is a LOT of rain in a short period of time. Was here for the Premiere and enjoyed it.
I ran the Hameldown Hammer a few years back, easily the most picturesque run I've ever finished (despite the torrential rain and wind on some of the higher peaks!). Great film, thanks for sharing.
Really enjoyed this video. One of the last wildernesses in the UK. We have nothing like this in our overcrowded corner of England. Thanks for taking us along.
Thanks for the kind comment. Yes I feel very lucky to have it so close by.
What a beautiful film! It really captured the wild beauty of Dartmoor. You are so fortunate to be able to explore it on foot. Thanks so much for transporting me into the wild during this pandemic period. Happy trails to you.
Thanks Joanne, really nice comment, much appreciated. All the best 👍
Amazing landscapes you’ve captured. I’ve spent a lot of time down on Dartmoor, it’s a spectacular part of the world. I ran the annual Dartmoor Volcano race this year, what an experience. Thanks for posting such a great film. Cheers The Rosary Runner 📿
Thanks for the kind comment, really glad you enjoyed the film and the landscape. 👍
I wish everyone did maps! Thank you thank you thank you! Everyone in the UK will know where Dartmoor and it's bogs are located but not the rest of us.
What a great journey my bro!
Thanks for sharing this with us!
Having spent A LOT of time on Dartmoor whilst in the Royal Marines, I have a much different opinion of Dartmoor then most but you actually made this place look nice! 🤣
I used to live in North Devon, but have moved back to my homelands north of the Bborder. I never had the time to really get out and explore the countryside properly and at that stage hadn't found my love of running either. Have to say this video is fantastic and makes me want to return and have a shot of that route as well! Did walk the coastal path a few times, im considering Hadrians Wall, that looks like a lot of fun, but I'm really lucky as my lockdown has been up in the Highlands of Scotland so there has been plenty of hills to keep me occupied up here! PROPER JOB! 😂😂😂
Work in Princetown and run in the moor at least once a week. North to South from Belstone to Ivybridge is such a great run. Lovely video.
Just beautiful. And just what I needed to get my lazy butt out on a run. Thanks.
What a brilliant documentary. I live on plymouth and walk Dartmoor a lot. Maybe time for a long run up there
Nice one Jonathan. Was in middle of hatching a plan to do this. This has definitely inspired me to do it when the time comes. Cheers!
No problem, glad you enjoyed it. Good luck when you do your run, enjoy 👍
Omg I think I saw you when you where doing this
I love the way you describe the special link you have with this landscape, as it reminded me the bound I feel with Pyrénées mountains, where I grew up and currently live. These places genually refill our souls and bodies, awake our senses for wonder and take our fears and angers without questions.
I didn't know the Dartmoor, and it looks stunning ! Hope I'll run someday over there.
Thank you for this great film, cheers !
What a superb documentary and capturing of this journey and experience. I hope to be able to capture my upcoming 50miler in a similar way!
Fascinating stuff about the peat pass. Never heard of them before. We have a similar route across peat bogs on the North Yorks Moors and I think I've come across these peat passes over there but had no idea that's what they might be until then.
Thanks Paul, I was in two kinds whether or not to leave that bit in as I thought it might be a little dull but I'm glad you found it interesting like me 😉
Awesome!
Interesting! I'm planning to do the crossing this summer! Based in Plymouth so I'm out on Dartmoor regularly.
We recently moved from Princetown to France. Not yet found a place to run that comes close to Dartmoor, but France is a big place and I hear they have a few mountains.
Hi Johnathan, I’ve watched this a few times now and shared a fair bit... it’s easily the best film in relation to the crossing and I like your style and presentation. Planning on doing the crossing to raise money for the homeless charity I work for in May and would like to follow your route if you have a gpx? Keep up the good work sir 👍🏻
Hi Ed,
Thanks for the kind words, really glad you enjoyed it. I don't have a gpx file myself, however if you have a look on Strava you should find ones on there. This is quite similar to the route I took but slightly shorter..

Loved this! Appreciate you may want to keep it private but would love to see the route / gpx file.
Great film John and awesome achievement! Looks like a very different experience to when I ran it from East to West a couple of years ago. I did it at the end of June and it got to 29 degrees :)
Thanks Russell. Glad you enjoyed it. Yep even Dartmoor can get hot sometimes. 😄
Fantastic. Your commentary was inspirational. Was this put on Strava? I wouldn't mind looking at the route.
Great film Jon! What did you film this on? The colour grading is beautiful.
Great video, lovely channel, well done! Havent looked through old videos, but do you have any kit reviews? Interested in getting a backpack/hydration vest for longer runs, not really sure where to start...
Thanks Charlie appreciate it. No reviews of running kit I'm afraid....plenty of options for hydration vests out there, to be honest I just use a fairly cheap one from Amazon, has served me well for many long runs.
Great video. I am training to run my first ultra the 50k Winter Traverse in February. How long did it take you to run? Thanks
Amazing film! Keen runner and having grown up walking on Dartmoor and south Devon I loved that! Are you on Strava? or have a GPX of the route, would love to check the route out!
My way of running. It doesn't matter whether it's a 10K run or a long day out and run a 100K.
Jonathan are you on Strava? I’d like to follow you for inspiration
Good to see 'Dartmoor 365' in some of the early shots! Do you know how many squares you did?
Yeah, one of the best resources for exploring the moor. Probably around 30 squares I'd imagine as the run was just over 30 miles.
@@JonathanJScottFilms Excellent! Not sure if you have ever done a 10 Tors route. From Okehampton camp to the bottom of the moor and all the way back again - took me two days and was hard work! I did not run it though!
@@AnthonyFrancisJones no, I haven't, sounds like fun though, what's the total distance?
@@JonathanJScottFilms Its about 50km but most do a route that crosses over from side to side too so either 45 or 55 miles. You take a full pack/tent with you too. It is great fun and I used to do it training groups but fun to see how you did it. Glad you know about D365 as I used to race past things and never really notice them until the book 'slowed me down' and made me look! Good to see you film as there are so many places one would recognise.
@@JonathanJScottFilms I did top to bottom and across the moor in a couple of days which is about 45 miles but you make up your own route and challenge - this was done with a full pack and tent - very different from having to run it like you did! Great to see you do it on your film.
Get some
Where's teh gpx? :D
Great video, I’m planning to run across Dartmoor myself this year, could you offer any tips from someone who has done it.
Thanks glad you enjoyed it. If your planning the north to south route and want to make it more enjoyable do it with a light northerly wind. Picking a decent weather window makes a huge difference, like I say in the video the difference between a wet and dry moor is massive, so a period of dry weather will help. Having decent nutrition and plenty of water is super important too. Knowing your route and being to navigate by map and compass is a must for safety reasons. Remember that most of the high moor is totally inaccessible by road and there is no phone signal so think about what you would do if you rolled an ankle...
@@JonathanJScottFilms thanks for the advice. I’m planning a north to south run going through Postbridge, whiteworks and on to Ivybridge. I’m thinking of running it in May so hopefully the weather will hold for me.
North to South for sure. Belstone to Ivybridge. Done a few times and love it!
09:31 any info on that background music?
Great vid. That settles it- entering the dartmoor crossing race 33.5mile 👌
Thanks...best of luck with the race, enjoy the scenery
