    I like the video. I am big fan of Sony's 8mm and hi8 equipment. I own a Sony GV-300, GV-F700, 2 GV-8, EV-S1, GV-A500 with the tuner and a RCA video8 camcorder. Keep making videos, their awesome.

Great to see a new video ;) amazing collection of 8mm devices, especially the Video Walkmans I find really fascinating, not to mention just how many different models there were, for a device that seems quite niche. You got me motivated to film some of my video stuff ;)

Oh dear….you’re out of control! Lol! I say that with a smile since it’s like walking into a candy store! What a collection young man, well done!

Yay, a new video! This is very nice, very interesting. I wish I could find that stuff. I've watched a video from Techmoan about Hi8 and 8mm tapes, and he also talked about the 8mm tapes being used in airplanes. I didn't know they had multiple Video Walkmans for the passengers, I thought it was a 8mm VCR with the picture displayed on all the TV screens in the airplanes. He talked about 8mm movies, there was one that was recorded on a Hi8 tape but in standard 8mm format. Also, I like your voice, and you express yourself well when you talk, keep making these videos.

To say I’m jealous is an understatement haha! I do have 2 TRV65 units and got them both at good prices and love them! But here in the UK our pal ones lack the input record feature from the phones so that’s annoying but due to pricing between our countries. But the thing I’m super jealous about is the portable Walkmans as in the UK they just don’t pop up for sale and the only ones on eBay working or not go for silly money sadly. Ohhh well as you can see from my many many uploads I have plenty of retro cameras to playback my tapes 😊

Nice!! It’s almost impossible to find a working Sony CCD-V701/V801 model! Even doctor Sony said the repair is a 50/50 chance of it being successful.

Wow! During that time period Sony were the leader in minuture inventions. Sadly they abolished all of that.

I adore your collection of Sony Hi8 & MiniDV equipment. Are you looking to add Digital8 to your collection? Digital8 was introduced 20 years ago at CES 1999 as a cheaper alternative to MiniDV by allowing 8mm & Hi8 tapes to record the the same DV signals but on more affordable tapes (at the time). Your Sony CCD-TRV65 Hi8 camcorder uses the same tape mechanism as the first generation Digital8 camcorders, including the orange-lit transport controls.

Oh, trust me, I'm well aware of D8, I have tons of recordings and several camcorders. My favorite series were the earlier models that had the backlit tape transport controls and side displays, they were the coolest. Thanks for watching!

Hi. I am trying to find some information on some older Sony tech and you seem to know your stuff! I have some Sony Hi-8 analog video cassettes I would like to digitize. The problem is, the old Sony handycam that we used to shoot all of them is now having problems with playback. In your opinion, would purchasing another handycam on eBay (cheaper) be just as capable and durable as one of the Sony Walkman’s such as the GV-S50 (more expensive)?

Looks like it’s been a few months from when you posted this and I’d like to add my humble suggestion. These older players are problematic since they’re very compact and have a system to operate the monitor all stuffed into one chassis. And there weren’t many players sold when they were on the new market so it’s easier and cheaper to find cameras. The players we’re seeing in this video were VERY expensive when they were new so older collectors like myself (I’m 58 now) like to have a couple of them in the collection since paying $1,300 for one in 1989 would take my entire paycheck to buy. If you find an older 8mm video camera that’s little bigger than the small sub-compact (and expensive) camera, it’ll be cheaper on eBay and if it breaks, it’s easier to repair since the capacitors will eventually need to be replaced. There’s also another option that you may prefer is to find a used tape player that’s basically a smaller looking VCR player and again, repairing it when needed will be even easier. I’ve recently seen players selling for around $100 in working condition. Just make sure the tapes you have will play in the player, there’s a lot of weird recording formats that some players won’t play or the circuitry that would automatically detect and play the tape is faulty. Hope that helps you somehow.

Thanks for your input! I did end up going with another Sony handycam since I only had several tapes I needed to re-record. Just an FYI, if anyone thinks Legacybox is the way to go…think again! I only used them because of the large number of tapes we had to convert. I do have a converter and an iMac so while I have the tools, I just don’t have the time.
Once I got my order back from Legacybox I realized the quality was noticeably less than I was able to get using my converter. Also, I had ordered the files be put on playable DVD’s as well as a usb drive. The DVD’s were absolutely unwatchable with all of the interlacing (and I don’t know what else) going on! When I complained they burned another set (I’m talking around 65!) which were just the same! When I complained again all they did was refund for the DVD’s…no explanation! While the files on the usb didn’t have the interlacing problem, the video quality was still disappointing. I assumed they would have the tech to be able to preserve the absolute best quality possible from the original tapes. Not so! While I realize it would take more storage space to do that, they should definitely make that clear to the customer! Additionally, I found several tapes where they had failed to convert the entire movie (which is why I needed to buy another player…to re-record those tapes)!
In the end, I decided to live with the remaining video that was transferred completely knowing the time it would take me to redo all of them. Maybe someday! :)
Anyway, I know you didn’t ask for all that info but I thought it would be a good time to give my opinion on Legacybox for anyone else reading this who are in my situation. I can’t speak for other similar companies who offer this service but if Legacybox is the standard…do it yourself if you want the best quality!

@@reggiem1668 that’s an incredible story friend! I’d also be upset if I got the same results, it seems they want to destroy everyone’s history. People today have placed too much trust and reliance in modern technologies that make scenarios like yours to become commonplace. I prefer using technology that’s “stand alone” and I can work on it myself for the most part, repairing todays electronics requires a microscope and even finding a replacement part is hard! And if what experts indicate about our future with AI, things will be much worse since anyone in power can disable your own car remotely if you missed a payment or don’t have insurance. Every day we see AI being put in charge of various systems.
