I saw the RT Bluegill action last weekend and was impressed. Fishing in 8-10' of water with weeds up to within 3' of the surface. My buddy was throwing the Gantarel and was catching fish of all sizes. Impressive that a 2 lb fish will hit this 6" bait without reservation. Very cool that the bait almost turns and faces backwards when you stop moving it. Only knock was the paint started chipping after several bass.
bighurts1 Hey Bighurts - Yup....I'm on board with everything you mentioned. This is the lure that I have been most impressed with so far and it's really becoming a go-to / confidence lure. I have not had an outing yet where I used it and didn't get bit. Just like you said...the little fish will hit it as well. I've had a 1lb and change on it up to a 5lbs 5oz. The swimming action is really, really nice. At first I thought it might just be a fancy paint job, but this is fast becoming my my top swimbait. Thanks for watching and good luck out there.
Thanks for the response, Nice fish, my biggest so far is 5lbs12oz, that was on a large spinnerbait. I try to have the mindset of quality over quantity. Sometimes it's tough sticking with a larger setup trying find a lunker, when the small fish are taken by the masses on a smaller/finesse approach. Even more so if fishing with a friend who is using something like a senko hahaha.
Bottom line tie makes it a subsurface lure. But also adding different sized weights allows you to fine tune it. a 1/16th drop shot weight turns it into a slow sink. Even lighter, you could have it suspend. Rear eyelet on the tail, yes it's for stinger hooks, but also a secret technique used by Japan by adding a willow blade. Once again, great review!
Great Review! I've been looking forward to this bait for about a year. Kudos for bringing one over. The bottom profile will definitely get multiple range of fish to bite.
Hey Jaenksta - I've seen that too. That might be the coolest possibility of having that attachment in the front....having the ability to weight it down and actually fish it near the bottom.
I have 2 gantarel juniors and I love throwing them. also I have the gizzard shad big 2.5 oz swim bait this is the best swim bait you can fish with very realistic and amazing just to watch how it performs in the water.
Thanks for taking the time to post this review. I am anxious to see it in action. A few things I noticed: - The eyelet on the chin could be used to add weight for bed fishing. Since this is a floating/suspending bait, an added weight should make this take a nose down attitude, which can be deadly when dropped in front of a spawning bass. Also useful when focusing on dock corners and so forth. - The rotating line tie and hook hangers are interesting. I have seen similar features on heavy saltwater lures, but not often on freshwater lures. Again, this supports the "big bite" concept - handle the fish of a lifetime. - This "Pond Gill" is the color I am most interested in. Seems to me that it matches the 'gills I see most often in my local fishing holes. - The feathered trebles are interesting. Some anglers go as far as painting the treble hooks to match the lure or a matte color in order to minimize their signature on the lure. Feathered/dressed would seem to be the opposite theory. Make them part of the lure appearance instead of trying to just make them blend in. Great stuff and keep up the good work.
Hey John - thanks for watching as always. A lot of people are filling me in about that front eyelet and its intended use. I'm remembering I actually saw of a video of someone putting that weight on, but it slipped my mind when making the video. Thanks for the heads up though. The rotating hook hangers are a nice addition, but the split ring size is amazingly small. Compared to most other large lures I have they seem to be of a much smaller gauge. Yeah, its funny about the dressed trebles. I've never been into painting the hooks or any of that. When viewed in the water trebles, regardless of whether nickel, black chrome, or brass color all sparkle and shimmy as the lure its being retrieved. I never saw it any different than having a subtle spinner on the lure adding a hint of flash. The feathered trebles move in a rather fluid and organic motion when coupled to the particular left/right swimming action on this lure. Deps employs them on their famous Slide Swimmer lure as well.
KeepinItReelFishing Interesting point regarding hooks adding flash. I recall reading an interview with Lee Sisson, lure designer for Bagley's, among others. He stated that he intentionally used chrome hooks and split rings instead of the traditional stamped hook hangers to add flash and noise to the balsa lures he was designing at the time.
Love the rigor you put into your reviews. Your effort is so appreciated. There's not nearly enough un-sponsored, unbiased, objective reviews of fishing products out there. That you even apologized for not including your own footage of the swimming action in the middle of winter (I'm in NYC so I know how nasty it is outside) is one of the reasons I will continue to look forward to your videos.
Hey bicyclethief - thanks a lot...I appreciate it! Yeah...you know the look of a lure is second to the way it behaves in the water. So, I really think a review without showing the dynamics in the water is not terribly useful other than the "oohh ahhh" factor of how good it looks to us. In the case of this lure though its photo realistic finish I think unarguably should be a benefit. I do want to make content through the entire year though, so some of these tabletop-only reviews are inevitable.
KeepinItReelFishing Either way, it's nice to see you interested in something. I can't wait to see it out on the water with some of your tests. Going to be a good year.
I live in NW Indiana. I am once again fishing with You Tube videos. I surely understand frozen lakes! Also, I sure do enjoy the depth of KIRFishings videos, and cannot wait to get a canoe in the water and see if I can catch a fish with something this size! Keep up the good work here, and I will keep watching your videos and waiting for Spring!
Another great video man! Thanks again for the very detailed reviews. I may have to pick one of these baits up, Jackall always puts out cool stuff. Tight lines!!
That thing is gorgeous. I don't even think I would risk fishing it. That's one of those lures I'd take the hooks off of and I'd put it somewhere that I could admire it in all of its glory. LMAO
great video! i was digging around a bit and found that the available "tie" under the bottom lip of the bait is to add a weight for a different presentation. I feel your pain having to wait out the freeze; Im from north jersey. awesome videos! keep it up!
Hey Carl, I got more info on the extra hook hanger under the mouth... I heard its so you can tie on extra weight to get it to dive even deeper... Great versatility !!
Yeah....I'm hearing that from a lot of people now. And somewhere there is a video of it being done. That really makes sense as to its intended function. Thanks man!
I just ordered one! Got a spawn gill because tw was already out of rt gill, thanks to this video, but can't wait to see what this thing can do. I also saw on instagram that the Tie under the mouth is where you attach a drop shot style weight for slow sink. Also could you do a vid on set up / mentality of swimbait fishing? Keep up the great work!
You're right, the bass are in for it this year. Huddleston has a new gill bait I can't wait to get my hands on. Their site was flooded went it went on sale but I got my order in. What's the price point on this Jackall Gantarel? And who do you think will be selling it first?
Hi Chuck - I had a hard time getting through with the Huddleston as well, but also got a few. This Gantarel will be $39.99 here in the U.S. Tacklewarehouse, outdoorproshop.com, and lastchancetackle.com I would suspect would be first.
KeepinItReelFishing Thanks. I'm in northern New Jersey as well (North Bergen) and suffering from a bad case of cabin fever with all the frozen water. grrrrr I'm doing a ridiculous amount of fishing porn and buying way too much tackle I don't need. I even started tying flies to pass the time. Can't wait for the thaw to try all my new toys. tight lines.
It is another really life like lure. Is it produced with the photo printing process? Also what is the price sticker going to say? I appreciate your format in presenting your reviews, very conscice and covers all the bases.
Hey Mark - Yes, it appears very much to employ the photo printing process. No different than a more common lure...the Cabelas HDS, just on a larger "canvas". I have read these will be $39 when released here in the U.S. Thanks for watching and the comment.
At this point you gotta worry about them not eating anymore lol. I love bass fishing but this might be to much. This might keep them from getting bigger since it would keep them from eating bluegill which is a main food source.
Hey man, thanks for the reviews! Awesome music, do you remember who that was? Also, do you ever do boat equipment reviews? I plan on getting a Minn Kota trolling motor soon and I'm trying to decide between the Endura Max and Traxxis. Also, what other companies should I look at? It would be a motor to put on boat rentals, so transom mount, 55lbs and 42" shaft.
You mentioned lakes iced over. Did the thought of adding tie ring on top of main body after adding proper weight to Bluegill ("Jackall Gantarel") and balance with string harness to position lure in horizontal profile for vertical jigging through ice ? I'd make some (4) attachable fins about the size of a quarter on first and second jointed sections. This would provide forward propulsion when you lift up on the lure. Put pc. of rubber wedged into one side of each joint to make it swim in a circle, simple. Take the hooks off for spearing decoy or leave them on for ice jigging ! I'd put a split ring on rotating eyelet on tail and an Indiana Blade, which "Duey Johnston's Spearing decoys have. They add sonic attraction to the decoy. These would make new videos for you to challenge. Perham,MN has many lifetime decoy makers documented in the "National Decoy Federation's " hardback album. I've had the pleasure to know most of them and learn from their life's work and experience. Your videos are very interesting and much information in your methods, Thank You. Don from Dent, MN. Invented many novelty fishing lures and decoys that work fantastic for catching all fish. You never clean fish with a bet that this crazy lure will catch fish. Interested in making some on a video, NO name or advertising please. It's so much fun pulling out one of these on a new fishing acquaintance. Just like my boat. Fellow had it professionally painted before I bought it. He never realized it was painted "John Deere" green ! Well I bought two J.D. stickers and mounted them on sides. The reaction was pure amazement, that John Deere ever made a boat. I tell them it's very valuable because they were in the boat business for three years and then bought out by a large Corporation. Collectible, not. If you believe that, I'll pass on the true reason lakes flood during the Winter in Minnesota .....
Great informative review. I recently purchased the Jackall Giron which has similarities to the Gantarel. Other than the Giron being a sinking lure and smaller, do you see any comparisons?
Sorry....I don't have a Giron so can't make that comparison. As more in-water videos of the Gantarel pop up I'm sure you will be able to get a better idea of how it compares to your Giron.
Hey John- Wish I could be of help, but I never really fished Passaic county. I fish Warren and Sussex counties. Here are the places that the state lists for Passaic. Of course there are private waters and off-limit waters not listed. www.state.nj.us/dep/fgw/fishplc.htm#passaic
hey man, love the videos not many people take the time to go that in depth with products without having a bias. im wondering about the paint job. how does it hold up and how much punishment can it handle?
Hey Bennett - I'll be fishing it this spring and intend to make a follow up video showing in-water motion and hopefully some nice fish being caught. I did see one pic online somewhere (can't find it now) where a lot of the paint got scratched off. I will reserve judgement until I have time with the lure and encountered situations that could potentially damage it and then access.
great video man. I am starting to get into swimbaits, and am working on some concepts but definately changing focus especially because im switching to musky fishing a bit more.
Hey Dane. Muskies huh? NICE! Well, having Oxford and Mountain Lake within 30 minutes of each other sure doesn't hurt to take on that challenge. Good luck with it man....and like all the Musky tell me your going to get the occasional monster bass fishing for them!
well im still a full time bass fisherman, but my lures that i make will be for both and yeah just have gotten into it a little more, and alot of the baits i throw anyways can be used for both, but no im still a bass guy first, but expanding my horizons i guess lol.
That is the other thing too i caught like high 8 low 9 two years ago and I highly doubt ill ever get a bass that big again, but that fish is still in oxford so sometime this year ill bring some lures that i made and ill show ya how i fish that lake. I know its not your favorite but will get ya on a biggin.
Hey man, great the videos. I see you have gotten into a lot of larger swimbaits. As a Jersey basser myself I was wondering what your personal best is, and was it caught with a swimbait? I want to start using some but fear they won't produce enough to be worth it.
Hey DC3vette- My best is 5lbs 8oz (on a frog) and a 5lbs 7oz (Black Dog Baits Shellcracker G2). This past year I used bigger baits probably 50% of the time. I plan to commit more time to it this year. Big bait fishing is high risk high reward. I have spoke to a number of guys in the Northeast who have gone multiple full day outings without a single bite. But, I also know of people who have caught 7, 8 and even 9lb bass. If your goal, if your passion is trophy fish then pursue the big baits. You have to weigh your success not in terms of single outings, but rather seasons or even the year as a whole. The best advice I can say is to enjoy this style of fishing you have to approach it like many Musky fisherman....expect nothing each time you go out, but know that over the long term you WILL catch a few incredible fish.
Hey Dylan - I have never fished for them, so I can't say for certain. But generally speaking its a small fish making erratic motions so I would think most any predatory gamefish would be inclined to strike it. I know how big and strong Tarpon can be though....so thats the only thing. I have no idea if this bait was built to stand the rigors of a tarpon battle.
AYO! Another great vid my man. I was laughing my ass off mid way through imagining you making a funny and showing the bait sliding across the ice, LOL. Bait is looking solid though, lets hope the fish think so too. Ever since I saw swiveled hook eyes on the Triple Trout, I thought every trebled bait should have them. So what's up with the expo in Suffern next week? I'll be there when the doors open on Thursday, hit me up if you wanna hook up. I'll bring some of my baits too. Take care dude!
Hey, great videos man. I was Just wondering since order a lot off tackle warehouse if you knew how often they restock after the g2 shellcracker in bluegill is completely sold out to the point where I can't even back order. They don't have a expected date on new arrivals and I really want one. Thanks keep up the good work.
Hey Erick - I have no idea on re-stock. I have seen that a few times in the past year...they will be out for long stretches on the G2. I'm guessing Black Dog only commits to periodic, small product runs over in China. You know....I have the Ghost bluegill, as well as the Bright bluegill and Redear sunfish and I will tell you between the Ghost bluegill and Redear (which is also a ghost finish) I feel they will get bit exactly the same. If YOU really want the Ghost BG cause you like its looks, then by all means wait. But, if you want it really for its great bass catching reputation then get the Redear if you see it in stock. People seem to bypass that color and its really crazy. It is an awesome color that I see NO difference in the strikes I get between it and the other colors. Bass are hitting this thing for the action it puts out.
You can find the Red Ear over at lastchancetackle.com. Oh, and the pictures are off. Their flash (and Tackle Warehouse's) must be off because in person the Red Ear is pretty darn close in color to the Ghost BG. The real difference is the lighter tail with red, which frankly I prefer as an attention-getter. This image here is true to its actual color: swimbaitcity.com/finalgraphics/2012/bdibscsb.jpg
Man we want to see the action not the lure itself.. You get into detail but not the detail people need to decide to buy something.. We want to see them in action ! You are first one to review most baits but cummmmmonnnnn... In all your lure reviews there should be a swim test at the very start
I feel bad for kids trying to get into fishing. Lures are way to expensive!!!. I got into fishing way before I was old enough to get a real job. throwing hay, cutting grass and etc... if I was able to get a 5 dollar Rapala I was stocked. now a bag of craw dads are 5-6 bucks for like 5-6 baits. its becoming extremely ridiculous. use to be a poor mans sport. 11 dollar plastic frogs. i mean wtf!!!
Manager of Jackall Lures here... Great review! That color you have is called RT Bluegill
i think the extra rigs in fro t at least is to add a weight to fish it lower in the water column
Thanks for the response,
Nice fish, my biggest so far is 5lbs12oz, that was on a large spinnerbait.
Hey Ariel - Thanks so much for chiming in. I edited the video to reflect what you mentioned.
Great Review! I've been looking forward to this bait for about a year. Kudos for bringing one over. The bottom profile will definitely get multiple range of fish to bite.
Hey Gino - thanks man. I almost wish they didn't bring it over! Now its going to be "too" accessible. Good luck on it if you get one.
Excellent video Carl, well done like always!!! I will be adding that one to the list, thanks for sharing bud!
I saw a video on these lures and they were using that front hanger to add a dropshot or tear drop weight, to help get the bait down.
I want one!!!😊
Thanks for taking the time to post this review. I am anxious to see it in action. A few things I noticed:
- The eyelet on the chin could be used to add weight for bed fishing.
Thanks for the heads up though.

sick review bud! i've been eyeballing this for a while now! such a sweet bluegill swimbait!
in another video i saw, the line tie on the bottom of the mouth is to actually clip on weights to make it sink.
Jackall makes the best baits
that bottom loop is for a wait! for like 3/8 wait for the noes stalls
I’m buying one now . Crappie color . One of my favorite lakes has crappie and big bass in Massachusetts. Should work great .
Love the rigor you put into your reviews. Your effort is so appreciated.

Can u do an updated video? How does it fish?
companies are really responding to the bluegill swimbait era. i hope a company produces a 3" one. that would be amazing.
Check out the Jackall Giron. It's a 4" but it's perfect.
Flux or the baby giron
Super cool review as always
That intro beat is hardbody karate 🔥
Another great video man! Thanks again for the very detailed reviews. I may have to pick one of these baits up, Jackall always puts out cool stuff. Tight lines!!
Carl - try what bloodknot said. Adding a smaller willow leaf spinner bait blade would be SWEET
Front, bottom line tie is for adding weight, since it's a floating lure.
The bottom eye in the front is to tie a line to fish it on the surface. The top eye is to fish it about 3ft under water.
Thanks man!
very nice, its about the size of the fish I been catching all winter..LOL , can't wait to get one...Thanks so much
Im pretty sure the lower eye is for shallower running depth.
Wow that looks so nice.. Loved the video review
Man, that's a great looking lure, would love to see a video review...good luck with it!
Hey Tom - thanks for watching. Hopefully I can get a few good catches in early in the season and combine that with various in-water footage.
Where are you fishing this in NJ? I frequent Round Valley and Manasquan Reservoir. Wondering if you've thrown this there.
Great job on this video! I appreciate your effort and detail. Going to be buying a few of these now. Thank you!
Hey Bob - your very welcome. Glad it helped you out.
great looking lure!!
Awesome vid Carl!! Let me know how it goes on the water!
Thanks man! Ha! T-minus 2 months and counting till I can do that.
At last a realistic video on fishing lures
the purpose of the eye under the lip is to add additional weight
You should look up the pirana lures P100 its a cool new lure
You're right, the bass are in for it this year. Huddleston has a new gill bait I can't wait to get my hands on. Their site was flooded went it went on sale but I got my order in. What's the price point on this Jackall Gantarel? And who do you think will be selling it first?
Hi Chuck - I had a hard time getting through with the Huddleston as well, but also got a few. This Gantarel will be $39.99 here in the U.S. Tacklewarehouse, outdoorproshop.com, and lastchancetackle.com I would suspect would be first.
KeepinItReelFishing Thanks. Take that back lol just heard you say your going to try and do that for your reviews now
having a hard time choosing between this lure or the rago alpha rat
+BassFishingNEB That's easy buy both.
It is another really life like lure. Is it produced with the photo printing process? Also what is the price sticker going to say? I appreciate your format in presenting your reviews, very conscice and covers all the bases.

Was wondering when you were going to catch on to these after your bluegill lures video
I had ordered it, but knew I wanted to make a separate video on it.
Do you think you could make a rod and reel arsenal vid
nice lookin setup.. looks like a muskie bait lol ever look at it with a UV light? what is the ticket on that bait?
Imagine getting that snagged
Thanks for the video! Cheers!
I've seen in a japanese video that the eye in the tail is to add a spinnerbait blade for added flash.
+Marco Caetano That's a great idea! Thanks for the heads-up on that information.
Thanks I fish around sussex too were would you recommend over there
At this point you gotta worry about them not eating anymore lol. I love bass fishing but this might be to much. This might keep them from getting bigger since it would keep them from eating bluegill which is a main food source.
How’s it catch now that you have had it awhile
The BIG BASS ON THE LEFT OF MY PHOTO WAS CAUGHT USING THIS SAME EXACT LURE.
What is the best time of year to throw bluegill style lures?
All year, but especially after the spawn.
u should due a topic on retrieve speed and retrieve controlled your the guy for the job good job
Hey man, thanks for the reviews! Awesome music, do you remember who that was? Also, do you ever do boat equipment reviews? I just picked up a Jr in the same color, went fishing and caught a 5. I'm sold on it. Steady reel it, pause then twitch and they crush on it.
Very nice! Congrats on the quick success and solid fish!
I live in north jersey around Passaic county what lakes and pounds do you recommend for land fishing for largemouth and smallmouth
Hey John- Wish I could be of help, but I never really fished Passaic county. I fish Warren and Sussex counties. Here are the places that the state lists for Passaic. Of course there are private waters and off-limit waters not listed.
www.state.nj.us/dep/fgw/fishplc.htm#passaic
hey man, love the videos not many people take the time to go that in depth with products without having a bias. im wondering about the paint job. how does it hold up and how much punishment can it handle?
any updated video after some use?
Awesome video had to sub! Where in Jersey do you fish. I'm from Brooklyn New York but don't mind traveling
if you do another review on this bait after you fish it, pls include how durable the paint is. its a great paintjob but will it last?
Hey Bennett - I'll be fishing it this spring and intend to make a follow up video showing in-water motion and hopefully some nice fish being caught. I did see one pic online somewhere (can't find it now) where a lot of the paint got scratched off. I will reserve judgement until I have time with the lure and encountered situations that could potentially damage it and then access.
well too many teeth marks is a good thing too i guess. Thanks.
great video man.
Does this come in a slow sink?
What part of nj are u from
What power rod should you throw with this lure
+Sean Dunaway Fishing is Xtra heavy okay
That one looks just like a Florida red belly
Bad ass video brother thanks for sharing
Damn that really looks real!!!
Can I ask what video editing software you use?
Very basic....iMovie 11.
Is this good to for freshwater tarpon too?
Hey Dylan - I have never fished for them, so I can't say for certain. But generally speaking its a small fish making erratic motions so I would think most any predatory gamefish would be inclined to strike it. I know how big and strong Tarpon can be though....so thats the only thing. I have no idea if this bait was built to stand the rigors of a tarpon battle.
Hey keep it real I live in nj too where r u from
Great swimbait for 45aus dollars u have to change treble to stand up to murrey cod
How many U.S. dollars did this lure cost?
Sorry, forgot to mention that. Will be $39 here in USA.
Super awesome
Why cant other fishing lure companies make more just like that?
just caught my pb on one these fishing a new pond in jersey
Congrats man! How big?
+KeepinItReelFishing 5lb 5oz watched it swim up after it. I was so stoked
Very nice dude. Anything over 5lbs is a truly great catch for NJ.
Hey Razputin where r u in nj cause I live there
don1985don I'm in Burlington county how about yourself
That's a big bait for me :P, looks awesome though
The tie under the mouth is for a chin weight.
can I throw this on a 7'1 H g loomis E6X
I throw the gantarel and the gillroid with my veritas toro 2.0 toro med-heavy, rated for 1-4oz. Lures
that's cool! I wish I could not just speak Japanese but also learn how to read it cause I probably translate it for you! I should pick it up!
Its A Lure! It Costs Almost As Much As My Spinning Rod!
Can anyone recommend some good swimbait how to vids?
Go to the youtube channel "tacticalbassin" by Matt Allen. He does a few on swim baits.
lol bass week . only on the discovery channel
Go to tackle warehouse they have them
I need one
how much did you pay for it
tacklewarehouse has em for $39
Muy padre
34 bluegills
Ha ha....yes, indeed!
This guy really sounds like like"Dirty jobs" MIKE ROWE!
I guess the pike are in trouble also. ua-cam.com/video/SGf5Kluhl64/v-deo.html
here's a german clip of it in the water ua-cam.com/video/7atwTdDHRjA/v-deo.html
Have you used it yet? Lol
to bad the paint durability sucks.
Man we want to see the action not the lure itself.. You get into detail but not the detail people need to decide to buy something.. We want to see them in action ! You are first one to review most baits but cummmmmonnnnn... In all your lure reviews there should be a swim test at the very start
Noticed on tackle what? Tackle tort? Tour? Couldn't make out what you said
I feel bad for kids trying to get into fishing.
Nick MANTRA Will it ain't a poor mans sport anymore.
aaaaaaaannnnnnnndddddddd sub.
