Stippling (or dotwork) has become very popular in tattooing over the last few years and with good reason. It is very versatile and looks great when done well.
Today we would like to share a more efficient way to achieve a consistent stippled effect
Thanks to our great friend Robyn Pallotta for sharing this tip with us a few years back. It has proven to be really useful.

I’ve done this technique for years and any rotary I’ve used (used five different for six years) works just fine. Just keep the voltage low. You want a slow machine and preferably a needle grouping of 7 or less (liner) to get this effect. Of course the effect works with any needle. It just varies in how it looks. These days I use a cheap tattoo pen with fancy cartridges and that works very well also. 🥳
Can you give an example of a pen that would achieve this effect? I'm new to this and seems that pens don't allow for controlling voltage so not sure how this would work
@@joroboro why couldn’t you change voltage with a pen? Both pens I’ve owned work fine. I’d say low volts and a direct drive would be best tho
@@cured_bacon647 I was confused - didn't realize the indicator on the machine showed voltage (I thought it was speed)
@@joroboro some show voltage and others cps (cycles per second)
What stroke is your favourite for stippling?
I use my xion for dotwork, 5.5 volts, 3rl tight, hang that needle out & I get some great effects, also like I saw daniels's post of the bishop wand packer I will try that out today since recently I just bought that machine & I will try it out on a blackwork / dotwork tattoo today
Nice. Thanks for the tip!
10s or 12s?
Amount of knowledge you gave us in few minutes is amazing. Thank You for sharing your thoughts with people.
Time to break out the notebook and write all these tips down. Thanks for the video, you have made a new follower.
This timing is completely on point! I’ve been watching my boss do the stipple work, I’ve been trying to master it. You’re awesome Jake! Thankyou for doing what you do
Thanks for the support!!
good observation here!
Wow this literally brightened my mind. I was looking all over the internet a video where it could clear my mind up over this shading style. Thank you very much
Homemade tattoo rotary machine stripped down G Guitar string sharpened up. 30 years ago it was called pepper shading. If you didn't know how to pepper shade the OGs would not let you tattoo them.
Very helpful, Thank You! Many Artist's don't speak of the voltage at which the machine should run at for this technique.
It's amazing how easy this is on the skin, one of my go to methods. Love the look of it
looks so smooth
What type of needle are you using?
I like how you get straight to the point, thank you!
Another solid episode man. I remember you telling me about exactly what you just explained in Biloxi. Great lesson Jake!
Thanks bro! Hope to catch up soon
Cool UA-cam Video and good knowledge about Dotwork and other Tattoo skills and Styles.Thank you dude.God Bless You💥👍👍👍💥
I’m gonna try it with my bishop wand liner. Lotsa punch
Im stippling with this technique and sometimes also doing small realism. Longer the travel nicer it works. With the wand 4.2 its amazing
What kind of wand! I have a bishop packer v.v
@@Jorge100012228 i use the packer wand the 4.2mm
Good to hear. I have the wand shader but not color packer. What voltage are you running it at?
@@FiresideTattooNetwork i thing the recommandet voltage is from 6-8 volts. I use it with 6 for pretty much everything but for stippling i use it on 3.5 -4 volts. Are you happy with the shader version? I thought buying either a shader wand or a hardlife gambler
Yeah the packer is good i use any 4.0 4.2 machine for this i started with the old school Thunder by Cheyenne at 11 volts and the packers made for this it seems.good weight but the shader wand is amazing i use long taper mags like a 15 mag and ive seen David vega kind of cross hatch but very slowly so i did it with this machine and thats how that dude gets it super smooth he cross hatches very slowly and he layers lighter tones very slowly takes alot of fime but its a dope technich with the shader wand
I love the way you explain everything thank you
Thanks so much for the kind words
Excited to try this. I've never been able to figure out how to get the same effect as a pen
Try the wand packer or any pen with a long stroke 4.0 and bigger they will hit hard enough to get that effect
I use the Bishop wand packer for this technique with 3RL at 5.4 volt but can also do large scale at 7v... Jason Ramos use a Cheyenne at 10 to 11v to get that effect so you don't need to go that slow.
1203 ??
@@revanthreva923 #1003 or 1203 I use both
@@ludovicmarchand5535 thank you bro... It means alot❤️
@@revanthreva923 when I do small area I stay with 5.4 volt, some large area I move my hand faster so I go to about 6.5 to 7v
10-11v?!? Wow. Thanks for the tip.
Most simple direct drives are capable to do it, some even easier and better than sidewinder. Also the Dragonfly is great for fine whip/ dot works style.
I use the Hard Life Rotaries Gambler with the Nucleus power pack set on 1 which is 4.2v according to their cheat sheet. It seems to work fine with a 5RL cart
I do it with axys Valahalla on the 4 stroke length. Works nicely 😋
What voltage are you running and what needle size? I’d love to try this with my Valhalla
@@xbeautifuldiscordx I use 4.1 stroke with 8 volts for light tones and 10 volts for darker tones
awesome video, you're such a clear speaker!
I use the Eternal Viper rotary for shading like this at 5.5 volts and it’s amazing!
wow do you got pictures ? whats your social
The neuma 4 at 5.2 Volts worked for me
its an amazin machine - the 20 cam ;)
Which cam are you using? Thanks for the comment!
@@FiresideTattooNetwork the 20 with the brass bearing
I love this technique
The voltage you mention should probably work for getting the machine running if you have a Dan Kubin or other hard hitting machines. Should clear that out. Not suggested to use such low voltages with regular rotary
Anyone have recommendations on settings for this for a neotat rotary? It's a slow machine to begin with and good for shading
I do a lot of stippling with my flux and I use my 3vr For big lines and solid fills. I’ve never tried using it like this. You might’ve given me another tool thanks!
thanks for the knowledge mate
Absolute beginner here, using pusher equalizer. Doing it at 6.5,but on someone with hard olive skin I have had to do it with more voltage, like 8 and moving faster. Did not break skin, healed fine.
I'm using "inkclaw more money" machine at 4.2v to 4.6v on 5mm stroke
Does the job perfectly
Very powerful motor no need to go further than that
What size needle would I use in a coil machine? Liner? Or shader?
Liner
For the size a 3rl would work
1003RL
I use a rook one pen style rotary at about 5 or 6 v and do this kind of technique.
avenger rotary/coil hybrid works pretty well for dotwork too
I find a 4mm stroke and above work well even into larger groups
I think the term is peppershading, dotwork is more the dotting dot by dot, though it can simulate the effect nicely
I own almost every dan kubin machine like Ty i cant come across any machine and not buy it. Dan has a machine called the swingliner and its the best machine for 3rl stipple shading at low volts i love this way of shading i also lay some smooth mag work beside it and sometimes on it u gett rich texture this way ive also done portraits of statues this way it makes an awesome effect ill tag u guys on IG but thank u robin i never tried it with my sidewinders im going to asap
Is tat 1203 rl ??
Thanks for the tip!. Yeah. Dan's machines are awesome
@@revanthreva923 i use a 1203 some people use different needles even 3rs 5rl textured needles .extra tight 3rl dont work as well for me as 1203 from kwadron are the best but a good tip i dont think is mentioned and is very important is to use several cartriges i used 8 just yesterday on a realistic rose on the hand all done in 3rl but i changed the cart 8x they have to remain sharp when they get dull they start to traumatize the skin too much and the results arent as smooth i do realism with this and i have to change my cartrige as soon as i feel the needle bounce back i do it like a pendulum whip shade so i know instantly when the needle is dulling on me
@@ivanmendoza8457 tats was very useful information... Thanks bro... I have used 1203 but never used 10 r 8... I am great fan of 3rl , I love whip shading using 3rl... The thing has always confused me is tat using bugpin rl gives different texture from standard one ?
I've knicked the skin pepper shading and it really horrified me. So you think I was trying to sweep over too wider area?
Iv been doing this for a while I mostly use 3rl with black ink whats it like with greywash ?
What’s the tip? Whip shading?
Awesome! 😃
Thank you!
Great Tip! Much appreciated.
Thanks. We appreciate the support
Great vid thanks again guys
Do you set the depth of the needle back a little in the tube?
He said he doesn’t ride the tip so that wouldn’t matter. Just graze the skin
Anyone has any experience using cheyenne hawk pen for stippling/whip shading/dotwork?
Yeah I have and that’s what I do. I usually just put it on 60 on low volts and do a whip effect. I use a 3 liner.
Hard to make on cheyenne. You get more whip shade effect. And dots wont be dark enough. Needle jump must be big and voltage smaller in theory.
Hey Jake, thanks for another great video! I see this style has become very popular recently. However, I wonder about the longevity of tattoos done only using stipple shading? Since each dot becomes a tiny island of pigment, it seems the body will be able to transport the pigments a lot faster than compared to a more solid area of pigments. So over (a fairly short amount of) time, only the outlines will remain. What do you guys think?
Thanks …appreciate the info …
This is great! Do you have any experience with stick n poke/hand poke tattoos in a shop setting? This stipple effect is very reminiscent of that look. Would love to know more about machine-free tattoos if you have any technique or knowledge to share!
Unfortunately I don't have any experience with hand poked tattoos. Sorry
Nice video!! :) It was actually helpful getting to know that I'd need a machine with a bit more punch in it at lower voltage. My current machine, FK Irons Spektra Flux, unfortunately doesn't seem to do very well in the lower speeds, it *can* do stipple, but I feel like it doesn't punch with enough power, so I might need to get a second one.
I stipple with a neotat rotary with no issues .. I find if it ain't punchy enough , you can easily stipple at a higher voltage if your hand movement is quick enough. ✌
Ill let you know how this technique works with a dragonhawk raven2
thanks!
Can we use RM or M1 to do dotwork ?!? Hope u will reply me
Thank you
Changed the stroke of my fk iron machine. Low voltage...and it .pushes like a hammer. No redness .
hey JAke... was that neck tattoo of yours retouched??
Nice tip. What is the throw on that machine ? Have a great week
Jamos Ramos teaches a lot about this style. He creates great pieces using only 3RL.
Thank you 💖
how do u mix the ink to make te stipple?
I have the Chayene Sol nova, but my Chayene power supply I only goes as low as 60 hz which is 8 Volts... Do you know how I can set up the power supply to lower?
By not buying Cheyenne’s proprietary garbage
The neuma4 with the 20 cam - can do this with ease...
I'll try that. Thanks
wtffffffff i need to learn how to do this, this looks so fucking beautiful to my eyes, i never seen someone stipple in that pattern, so fucking good and im excited to know this >>:))))
Stroke?
...wow I always thought it was done at a much higher voltage...thanks for the great tip! ...Can you achieve the same results with a mag?
Good question. Haven't tried it with a mag. Give it a shot and let us know!
Yes you can if you use the edge
You’d want a lower voltage than your hand speed so volts would be personal preference. You just want it to hit way slower than your hand speed to get dots and not a line. All an outline is, is just a bunch of dots in a line... if that makes sense.
@@cured_bacon647 yep 👍🏾
@@ArtbyJasonABell glad I could help. Forgot to mention it also works well with a mag. I find it easier with a curved mag though
I do It with 4,7v on a direct drive machine, Works good
I've done stippling at the volt set up at 3.9 to 4.3 but I'll do it slower to see what's up!!
yeah. My guess is that it depends on your natural hand speed. I wouldn't have guessed it would have worked so well at such a low voltage
Hi! Thanks for the reply back! And you're right, I used few machines and later on a coil machine with 5RL going bit fast and it was showing more than my wand just going back and forth. Just depends how patient you are on making your art pop.
I've heard that dotwork or stippling if the best method for palms & feet. Is there any truth to that?
Dotwork/Handpoke yes, stippling no
I find this technique works perfect with a D20 at 4 vaults 🙏🏼
Awesome! Thanks for the tip
shader or liner?
anybody did this with a rotary ?
4mm nedlee out and 4 volts thats works flor me
❤❤❤
Is it easier to tattoo with a thick grip like that? I use the same tape but I only wrap it around 6 times or so. Is it better to make it thicker
Personal preference and comfort. Less vibrations but I’m more accurate with a skinnier grip but as I get older a fatter grip is more comfy.
What size needles work best for this?
3s or 5s
Wow
Are you in Colorado? I think you were my uber driver
Jake u my best friend and u don't even know
How many needles did you use?
Most people use 5rl. I used up to 12rl when hitting dots "manual"
If you ever used single needle that’s how simple and easy it it. Did that for so many years in prison I will never go back to it.
What size linner
I'm using tight 5s but most people seem to be using 3s
Is there any update on the ink/tattoo that only last a year
You mean a shitty tattoo?
🔥💪
Can you do asian dragon tattoo? Lol
The idea is pretty basic.Pendelum stroke and cross hatching .Hatching looks better in terms of uniformity.
Yep the pendulum is the best way to descrbe the motion its alot of wrist work but cross hatching is important to achive that smooth look
So this is not about dotwork, but stipple shading..
2:13 it's horrible sorry
Jake it's called black whipshading... Before any professional from back in the day would ever use greywash(alcohol or whatever) because grey wash had no faith inside the community so they shaded like you described to achieve this effect.. Gill montie would be a good example of old style dot work whipshading
Similar but not the same
Wrong
Dam it’s been a min since I’ve seen ur videos bro. But dam are u ok? Ur face looks like death?
Really? uhh. Thanks for the concern. I think I'm just getting old
@@FiresideTattooNetwork I think you look good :D
