I used to walk past this mill with my mother on the way to sunning hill school, was about 4 or 5 years old.The engine house at the end of the building had big windows so you could see the engine working, quite a marvelous site to see for a young lad.The best time to see it was when it was dark and the lights were lit making the polished engine gleam under the lights.Happy memories from 66 years ago,now I am 71.
Swan Lane mill is my favorite local mill and I like the engine house with it's big windows. I never got to see the engine but I'm sure it would have looked impressive to any passers-by. Thanks for sharing your memories of it!
Thanks for your commend Ken. I know this place quite well but learnt a bit myself when getting some info to add to the video. I plant on filming some other local mills.
Amazing video of an iconic Bolton building. I grew up on Settle Street so it was always in view. I love the details of the stone swans on the top...nice to see a close up. Makes me sad to see the state it is in. Would look amazing with every single window gleaming!
I completely agree, this is one of the best remaining mills in Bolton and it's sad to see it not being fully maintained. It's iconic and should be looked after property. Always nice to hear comments from locals who have lived near or worked in such great buildings. Thanks for your comments!
I've lived near it since i was 2 years old, i'm now nearly 62 years old, i've also worked there for 2 difffent companies over the years, one was in 1979 and the other in the 80's, that last one was where they make Spanish [ Or Liquorice as it's also known as ] which they still make there today, there are many other various buisnesses that are based throughout the old cotton mill and have been therefor decades, i can see the mill from my house as i live 5 minutes away, the views from the the mill roof are wonderful. 👍 👍
Thanks for your insight :) I live quite close too and I've walked past and smelt the Liquorice. I didn't know they still made it there. I've filmed a few other local mills you'll probably recognise.

What amazing history that building must have. And with the brick of the houses around it and the surrounding area. Love the music too

Sooner or later Bolton Council will get their hands on it and pull it down for houses or accommodation
