Absolutely the very best mini television series ever made - I remember the night that the conclusion was going to be aired and a couple of family members had arrived from the UK, unexpectedly, had registered at an airport hotel and invited us to join them for a drink. I was devastated - no VCR's back then - so as family duty called, whipped over to the hotel bar and begged the bar tender to switch over from the hockey game to the Thorn Birds - think I generously tipped him to grant my request - and had to be satisfied with a choppy version of the greatest mini series ever made!
Richard Chamberlain is a consummate actor who is always gracious and gentlemanly in interviews. His ability to portray straight romantic leads, and tough characters in general, with such success is a tribute to his tremendous talent. He is unforgettable as Fr. Ralph, as well as " Blackthorne", as Casanova, as Alan Quatermain, Wallenberg, as the first Jason Bourne, as Dane Corvin ("All the Winters There Have Been", as Edmond Dantes, etc. The testimony lies in the fact that he was able to play all of these roles so convincingly that they remain in our minds and hearts all these years afterward. He was so good he never got pegged as a character type! He could play anyone, any type! The fact that he was gay was simply unimportant and immaterial to his talent. Bravo Richard!
An amazing series, bought it again recently and have loved watching it again, with an older eye. Still wonderful. I have enjoyed seeing Richard Chamberlain being interviewed here, he seems like a sweet man x
A classic tele-series of a great novel...very handsome and charming man....loved the Dr. Kildare series also... all his movies are spectacular..... Edit: all his works show the Shakespearean training...♥️🇺🇸
I have always thought it a bit disappointing that Rachel Ward comes across as a rather cynical and bored with it all in this interview. Perhaps it was the way it was cut but I suspect not. Both she and Brian Brown are quite arrogant and disinterested which is a great shame for the millions of viewers that made The Thorn Birds the huge success that it is. Richard Chamberlain by contrast is interesting, engaging, humble and a gentleman.
I think the series has always been extremely bittersweet for her. Her performance was panned by the critics. She was the only principal cast member not to be nominated for the major awards. I think it still stings her to think back to that time and relive it, which is terribly sad. I personally thought she was brilliant in the role. She brought every ounce of vulnerability that was needed. And her chemistry with Richard Chamberlain was off the freaking charts!

That may have been more of a conscience “career derailment” (I’m saying that sarcastically) than her performance in the Thorn Birds, which is actually revered by many.
@Professional_Victim_H8er personally I luved her..but yes she did fall pregnant shortly after marrying Brown ..however I dont think that's the reason for leaving Hollywood..Remember she made the movie "Against All Odds" with Jeff Bridges after and she was fantastic in the movie..You should see the movie "Fortress" An Australian movie she made when she moved there in 1985..a well received movie
I have been watched this mini serie for the first time yesterday, and I don't know how to explain... I just loved it! I'll gonna watch it so many times.
Am reading the book again, after a 50 year interlude, and loving it. Watched this on Tv when it was first aired, and thought it was just as amazing, the actors, the setting, and the music, all superb, Thankyou for reminding me.
My hubby gifted me a dvd and i was so happy to go back through time and fall all over inlove again with Fr. Ralph 😊 this series would never be ever put to last on my list. Bested all others . Forever a fan❤
That was wonderful - bringing back feelings of that riveting, powerful and tragic love story. Beautiful to see Richard Chamberlain so invested in the story and characters. He spoke with generosity and sensitivity throughout. Sad to witness him saying how joyful the long awaited love scene was for him, while Rachel Ward remembered it as awkward and silly. He also spoke highly of her acting and I didn't hear one complement from her about him. I fell in love with The Thorn Birds book and to me Richard Chamberland was magnificent in the role.
I can't understand Rachel and her coldness. Had i been her i would thank God on my knees for having the chance of kissing such a gorgeous man,let alone feel his body on mine and so on. I would have been glued to him long after they would say " Cut".
During filming she fell in love with Bryan Brown. Of course romance scenes couldnt be real. Her detached comments only seem pretentious in respect of her husband.

Bryan Brown and Father Ralph had another rival for Maggie....Richard Chamberlain. After looking at all the scenes and the interviews I agree with Ann/Piper Laurie " cares? I think he is in love with her"
I agree wholeheartedly. After watching the mini-series over and over and watching a slew of his interviews, there is no doubt in my mind that Richard was truly in love with Rachel and I think Rachel was in love with Richard as well. Who knows what would have occured in real life between the two of them, if Bryan Brown had not come on scene.
I have recently rewatched the entire series (read the novel) and delved into several news articles and interviews with Richard Chamberlain where he's speaking about Rachel. I completely concur that there was something more between them than just a great working relationship . Their chemistry is palpable! The Thorn Birds was filmed many years before Richard came out, but, honestly, the emotion and heat between them seemed to be more than just basic acting. His face literally lights up when he's interviewed about her. In his book he says that she fell for Bryan Brown, "but as Father Ralph it was easy to believe the radiance of her love was for me and me alone." In other words, IMO, while they were filming he had feelings for her and thought (or knew) those feelings were reciprocated.
Mai viste delle scene appassionate e dolci allo stesso tempo come quelle tra Rachel e Richard.. Lui sembra presissimo e non dà affatto l'idea di recitare e lei pure. Fanno profondamente emozionare. Quella non era esclusivamente una finzione, per me.

Mine too. It's the only miniseries I have ever watched all the way through again, and I have done it 4 or 5 times now.
Thorn birds and Shogun were both phenomenal. Really miss the days of cable miniseries. It gave you something to look forward to in simpler times.🎧

I watched it when I was in high school in hk. Still remember the so unforgettable story. I wish Netflix can play it again.

As soon as I got home from work I tuned in to my local ABC affiliate to watch The Thorn Birds. I was hooked.

It´s very beautiful how Richard Chamberlain talked about the love scene but it's quite sad how Rachel Ward explained it like a total meaningless thing

Bryan Brown and Father Ralph had another rival for Maggie....Richard Chamberlain. After looking at all the scenes and the interviews I agree with Ann/Piper Laurie " cares? I think he is in love with her"
I agree wholeheartedly. After watching the mini-series over and over and watching a slew of his interviews, there is no doubt in my mind that Richard was truly in love with Rachel and I think Rachel was in love with Richard as well. Who knows what would have occured in real life between the two of them, if Bryan Brown had not come on scene.
I have recently rewatched the entire series (read the novel) and delved into several news articles and interviews with Richard Chamberlain where he's speaking about Rachel. I completely concur that there was something more between them than just a great working relationship . Their chemistry is palpable! The Thorn Birds was filmed many years before Richard came out, but, honestly, the emotion and heat between them seemed to be more than just basic acting. His face literally lights up when he's interviewed about her. In his book he says that she fell for Bryan Brown, "but as Father Ralph it was easy to believe the radiance of her love was for me and me alone." In other words, IMO, while they were filming he had feelings for her and thought (or knew) those feelings were reciprocated.
Mai viste delle scene appassionate e dolci allo stesso tempo come quelle tra Rachel e Richard.. Lui sembra presissimo e non dà affatto l'idea di recitare e lei pure. Fanno profondamente emozionare. Quella non era esclusivamente una finzione, per me.
