It isn't just one thing. Covid, streaming, horrible writing, political movies, sequel after sequel, strikes, and on and on
U get it.
nah, people just realize they prefer the convenience and comfort of streaming at home and hollywood realizes they no longer have a monopoly on entertainment when theaters were the only way people could watch movies. if streaming services were around 20-30 years ago 90% of massively successful films that came out back then would have all been massive flops. i watched The Firm when it was on netflix. it was a fine movie. it made $270 million in 1993. if it came out now it would have been a flop in theaters
@@vietimports i mean he did say "on and on" but thanks for elaborating.
Couldn’t agree more it’s not just one thing it’s a myriad of things that is killing Hollywood and cinema/film overall
@@alexayres6250yeah but movies have been political. Like BEEN. It’s purely streaming and the internet changing the way people watch movies. That’s it. With Marvel it was purely the writing. Not women, not characters of color, not anything but the writing. If the writing was good there would never have been a problem
I don’t feel sorry for them. They wanted that Netflix money and didn’t realize they were reprogramming their audience to see these movie at home. Back in the day you have to wait months before a movie was able to be bought and viewed at home after you purchased it on dvd. Now you can rent it in a few weeks after it’s released in theaters and in some cases watch it at the same time it’s released in theaters. Hollywood needs to realize they have to reprogram their audience again which means stopping all these streaming services and making their audiences wait longer for movies to be viewed at home. Or they have to make all of their movie , mega events like Barbie and Oppenheimer or make movies that already have a huge fan base like super Mario brothers. If they need some recommendations; Zelda, Fortnite, Harry Potter (adult years).
Barrera’s career is in limbo after opening to 10 million on a smaller budget. But Henry Cavill and Alan Ritchson can do 9 million domestic and can be in talks for James Bond and Batman???? Ridiculous
Grace has always been very misogynistic
I'm guessing within the context of her statement that Barrera's first film post-Scream underperformed (next week will confirm that or not), it makes sense.
HC hasn't had a successful film in...years. And his lack of box office draw is a reason why he would not be a good choice for the Bond role. Maybe he should be happy he has a streaming show coming in, like, 3 years.
Barrera is done and rightfully so. Good riddance.
Opening $15 million worldwide on a $30m budget is a win in my book for a small, female lead horror thriller. Henry Cavill, on the other hand, is a box office dud. Too many times he's proven he can't move his predominately male fanbase to the movieplex, much less the general audience.
Who is Barrera? I don't know her/him/whatever but I heard about Henry and Alan.
going to the movies is not cheap
🎯
Especially with a date or kids tagging along.
22.95/mo is pretty cheap entertainment.
@@WesleyWalrus consider this, you are paying that amount to view the film once. That same price would cover a subscription to a streaming service or buying the film digital/hard copy where you can view it multiple times. Not only that, but you can share your viewing experience with a group of friends. Let’s say 5 people. If you all go to the theater, you’re spending well over $100 on tickets alone. Comparing that to just inviting those same people over to just watch the film on Netflix, then going to the theater isn’t cheap.
Heavily inflated ticket prices
Hollywood is struggling for a lot of reasons but the biggest is they are not giving audiences a reason to go to the theater. Post Covid can still generate big box office if the quality and scale is there..SpiderMan No Way Home, Dune 2, The Batman, Barbie, Oppenheimer, GOTG 3, etc were all big hits due to quality and scope.
Laying off all the talent that helped make it isn't helping
The problem is in your own argument: The young generation sees no value in a simple, more relaxed film that isn’t part of a franchise or a monster effects extravaganza. THATS what killed movies/theatres
@@lars7282 its the Hollywood studios that conditioned them to be this way... They pushed out empty low quality spectacle like it matters but it's just hollow entertainment that everyone forgets. People figured out it's not worth it... unless it is an actually high quality product.
I think that there is a disconnect between what the studio executives want and what the audience wants.
We saw surveys from 2019 that said most people go to see one film a month and right after that COVID hit and I'm certain those surveys will show that people go once every 2 or 3 months now because streaming gives us so much to watch
Girl math
It used to be that if you missed a film in theatres then you had to wait years for it to arrive on VHS. A decade ago, films were releasing on disc 5 months after their theatrical run. Now? It’s mere weeks and if you wait a little longer, it’ll be delivered to your streaming service in 4k HDR and Dolby Atmos at no extra cost.
There’s little consequence now to missing a film in theatre.
Funny, I just posted the 5.5 month figure in another thread for _Austin Powers, International Man of Mystery (1997)._
Wow, Alex Garland's Civil War has people talking about the "fairness doctrine". Pretty effective filmmaking if you ask me.
Abigail has opened higher than Renfield, The Last Voyage Of The Demeter, Ready Or Not & The Invitation so that’s great for vampire movies!
the bar is low. So low.
I wish Hollywood would take the L and lower ticket prices instead of insisting every movie have an overpriced, collectible popcorn bucket. Like, who thought, "You what will get people to the movie theatre. $30 Madame Web popcorn buckets. At this point, it's like the people who make movies (i.e. producers, directors, executives) don't even see movies in actual movie theatres.
It seems like box office reporters don’t understand that if an IP isn’t known and the cinema score is high and the audience scores are high - that doesn’t automatically (and also only in their minds) mean people are there for the actor in it - could it just simply be people enjoyed the movie. Have we become so analytical about the box office that we ignore the core foundation of why people watch films- which is how it made you “feel”. If it’s a good time it’s a good time. Plus, if Cavill fans showed up just to see him, as you say minimally, in the movie- that would have hurt both scores - but it’s not.
This point doesn't get made enough. Actors get lionized in the industry because agencies can make a lot of money that way and it's a cleaner thing to pitch rather than acknowledging the contributions of the hundreds to thousands of names in a movie's credits. Even the most famous actors frequently either bomb or underperform at the box office however.
Damn; She just said (Dune 2) saved movie industry like a month or ago😂
Multiple things can be true. It can be a zenith that gets eclipsed, it can be significant and be followed by even more success. Perhaps some people saw Dune and then wanted to have more fun
Because she loves hyperbole. Dune 2 was always just post-pandemic big. Obviously if movies can open over $200M, a movie opening with $80M was mid blockbuster.
A month is a long time ago
Yet outside the US NOONE talks about Dune. That movie is irrelevant to the overall direction of the industry imo
She likes sensationalist hyperbole!
As an actor is in this industry, its fucking hard right now, streaming has killed a lot, less movies filming & less tv shows filming. Streaming also killed the pilot season format, right now would be that time, maybe 300 shows would be trying to get greenlit before & now its like 3. If you didnt get into the industry before the pandemic, its just hard as hell now & after the strike, things are just trying to adjust to the new world, everything has changed now, execs are still trying to hoard as much money as possible & the business needs to adapt how to make money in this new streaming world, sad to see so many studio lots are DEAD.
*"execs are still trying to hoard as much money as possible"*
LOL as Netflix decides to stop recording membership numbers and the others will shortly follow. As execs get fired with 8 figure packages. And somehow Netflix has priced itself into the streaming tv options and nobody has even mentioned that!
Yea, make it make sense 🥴
Could you please elaborate. There’s new shows and movies every week.
@@andrewjames8792I was just thinking the same thing. So many shows that I can’t even keep up. Amazon, Apple, Netflix shows and movies everywhere!
Is there anyway to see if the 18-24 audience has stopped going to movies? iPad kids are young adults now and I would think an entire generation of people not having attention spans would affect movies
It also seems like Covid has turned some adults born pre 2000 into iPad kids
Some dont even care for tv or film
Video games are popular but even still
Most younger people care for social media content only
As a 19 most of us are not ipad kids, but it is true that we go less and less to the cinema and would rather just stream a series or play videos games
I remain confused on the narrative of success around Civil War - it has not even recouped its marketing costs much less it’s budget.
According to Wikipedia CW budget was 50. Assuming A24 spent 25 million on advertising, the film would have to make $150 million world wide to break even. It should reach that goal by the end of its run.
It hasn’t fully opened world wide.
Marty was right, streaming has ruined the industry and tbh Marvel just becoming the most generic brand, people have just gotten over it. I think movies like Dune and Barbie are the kind of blockbusters that people want see and for superhero movies they should just focus on different characters entirely like F4, Xmen and the Batman.
Kinda agree. There are few Phase 1 characters I want to see more of (Sam Wilson, Wanda). Luckily I'm looking forward to X-men and FF.
@@MichaelCDavis1neither wanda nor sam were in phase 1 lol
Then why is Deadpool and Wolverine is this year most anticipated movie as was Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 last year ? Lol
K-shaped recovery. A few movies will do extremely well, everything else will do extremely terribly.
@@edselgreaves6503extremely well and xtremely poor compared to what? Phase 4 did better financially than Phase 1 and Phase 2. $5.7 billion versus $3.8 billion and $5.2 billion
I live in the uk and love the cinema, i've recently been to see Monkey Man, Civil War, The First Omen, Abigail. Really enjoyed them all, and plan to see Maxine, Love Lies Bleeding, Challengers, Fall Guy, The bike riders, Quiet place day 1, deadpool and so on. So many of my friends say that no originals come out, but its utter nonsense, they just don't go and support them.
Congrats to GxK for beating GvK worldwide box office.

Absolutely loved Abigail!! So much fun!
SOOOO DAMN GOOD, RIGHT??!??? Best of 2024, if ya ask me!
It was dynamite 💣🔥🔥
I think the quicker turnaround from theater to rental has also had a big effect. Why see it in theaters when you can get it at home in a month, month and a half? There used to be a time where it was months and months before you could rent it so it was almost obligatory to see it in theaters
Ministry of a gentlemanly warfare is one of my favorite movies so far this year so so much fun had a big smile on my face the whole time!
I agree. I very much enjoyed it
Just got back from watching it. What an amazing movie.
Same
They said history, Guy Ritchie, and Henry Cavill and I went.
The only problem I had with the movie was that the score was distracting and zany at times but still a very fun one!
I personally think that the politicization of our society is killing our institutions, economics, and entertainment opportunities.
In a way that was always the case in America, since decades. It’s only on a visible extreme right now bc it’s being used basically for marketing on every possible occasion and by absolutely everyone
@@lars7282 Yep outrage marketing was extreme diminishing returns, the world need detoxification!
Grace, you say Hollywood is evolving, but I counter that Hollywood is not evolving QUICK enough for the landscape.
They have chosen complacency in bankable IPs/Reboots. It’s not at all surprising when consumers aren’t lining up for more of the same…
ironically its the IPs that are the most successful not original ideas, just look up the most successful films of the past decade, only IPs, only Avatar in 2009 comes closest to definition of "original"
I barely go to the movies anymore. I always end up waiting until a movie is on streaming, and even then- I wait until it's on a streaming service I already subscribe to. I don't know when I'll get back into the theaters.
Same, I only go to the movies 3-5 times a year now. I prefer to just wait for a movie to get on streaming.
You guys probably have a big widescreen TV, too. When I did streaming years ago, it was on my laptop. When I did Netflix-in-the-mail, I watched DVDs on a 19" TV I got in 1991. But some of the big movies of the last year were "event" movies, or must-see movies, which drew a crowd to the theater.
How many times did you go per year when you went a lot by your standards?
Taraji hurt the movies chances of awards and box office, who would want to support a movie that treated them so badly? I don't understand why are you comparing her to Kristen. And, uff this is the world now, where denouncing a genocide is offensive🤦🏼♀️
I'm a little surprised CW held the top spot, with how divisive it supposedly is (I enjoyed it, personally). Abigail is awesome and was rooting for it to be #1. Radio Silence + Melissa is always a good combo.
It’s only divisive for those who wish it was. I saw it last night and it was a warning overall but also what journalist go through for the truth.
“2 tickets will cover a streaming service” what! In the UK 2 premium screen cinema tickets is about the same as Netflix, prime AND Disney+ together! Still think a big part of it is theatres poorly maintaining dirty screens, broken HVAC, busted seats and no staff to deal with noisy/disruptive people. Makes it really low value for money.
It's definitely COVID... Because as a dj, me and all of my friends talk about how the party scene has drastically changed since COVID where I am... Bars and small gatherings dominate now... Ppl rarely go to clubs unless there's a huge event
It is the opposite in Europe.
@@manantial773 hmmm... Interesting
I would say that Hollywood is struggling today primarily due to the streaming platforms, as you say, but also Hollywood not delivering films that mainstream audiences want to see, whether due to quality or content
"What kind of American are you" didn't even refer to civil war, he was asking were they central or South American. Very clever marketing
15:24 Hollywood needs to get over itself
Yup
Saw Challengers last night - it had some beautiful shots in it but it was a boring, slow movie with an unsatisfying ending.
I saw there's an X-Men meme with Jean Grey sitting between Cyclops and Wolverine.
Zendaya is NOT a star. I said it before
idk why we judging barrera on abigail. no is talking about it. I didn't even know she was in it. Your the only one pointing it out. literally no one cares. no one is holding this film against her. she had to been filming it before the scream situation anyways.
Grace, your homework before the show. The Fairness Doctrine disappeared in the late 80s, before Rove’s time.
I think you forget that the cost of living has increased. I used to go to opening weekends, but now I don't get to catch films 2 or 3 weeks later.
My family goes to the theater about 20X a year. But the time commitment still aggravates me. They need to cut down on the trailers and commercials. Show 2 trailers, 2 commercials and a nice big no talking, no phones announcement and get on with it. Get it down from 30 minutes of crap to 10 tight minutes so we want to come back.
Just go late lol
@@theshape7214 For real. A lot of people do but I'm not trained that way.
i don't mind trailers...but the commercials kill me...and they still don't start on time. If the movie starts at 1 PM, AMC will show commercials until 1:05, then the don't talk bumper, 20mins trailers, Nicole kidman then the movie.
@@thecunninlynguist It all adds up. You factor in drive time, there and back, arriving early to get snacks, 30 minutes of junk then the movie. 4 hours is a big chunk of your day.
That’s true, trailers take like 30-42 minutes
It’s the theaters not enough premium screens expensive ,rude people dirty theaters
We did lose 2000 screens during the pandemic. Someone I met said his company bought a theater and opened it this year, so effectively brought a few more screens online. But probably not "premium" i.e. expensive screens.
Henry Cavill is played out .. he is not a movie star and will never be .. meanwhile Grace is being very aggresive towards Barrera while her career just started and has all the time to become a big movie star
To that point, Cavil's been around and rode the waves of "potential star"... to studios not liking him. Similarly Barrera's on her first wave; up with Scream V, and then the little dip with Hollywood having an issue with her. Grace is just tracking that. Here they both are, doing the thing- trying to get work, stay rising not fading. I don't really see aggression. Cavil didn't have his issues until much later, whereas Barrera's is happening early.
I don't know, people are saying, "Ooh, Henry Cavill is in this, let's go."
He’s a good streaming star. Like a Millie Bobby Brown. He should hyper focus on that
Horrible writing. Egos. Greed. Why go to the theater anymore to see crap?
Kung Fu Panda 4 and Puss in Boots 2 are right now same amount of $480M.
As did Elemental and yet no one talks about it lol
I ❤️ Elemental, story, the animation are beautiful and great!🔥💧
Well Elemental had a way higher budget therefore didnt turn a profit. That's probably why
Elemental cost way more 2-2.5 times the amount of puss n boots and KFP4, it was not a win despite making 500 million.
People like Grace are why awards shows are increasingly meaningless..... She hated the movie yet says she would give Kirsten Dunst an Oscar for something that has nothing to do with her performance in the film.
It would be like giving someone an Olympic gold medal even if they came in last place simply because they a "had a good career."
Grace obviously has never played a sport and seems to not know how awards work.
Very good example.
The Arts aren't a sport, hope this helps
@@Caiser In todays America it is and even so is the media.
?? ughhhh many people have gotten awards because it’s their time just like Jamie Lee Curtis, you really think she deserved an Oscar? Let alone a nomination??? please
She's not really pro-meritocracy 😏
Grace, why haven't you reviewed Rebel Moon pt. 2? Is it because you realize if you can't say anything nice, you won't say anything at all?
I would not wish on anyone to watch that film, not even online reviewers. Everybody deserves not to waste their lifetime on 💩💩💩
Yes she said something like that in a stream
That’s basically what she said. She appreciates Zack too much to say anything bad about his films.
That's kind of cowardly, right?
@@Globalo45 If she skipps utter crap she has more time for streaming shows so maybe its cool?
Go and watch Abigail it’s such a fun film!!! Go and support Melissa Barrera she deserves it!!!!
It’s not about COVID Grace. A lot of the big movies that was suppose to come out this Spring and Summer got pushed back to 2025 because of the actor’s strike. Things will turn around once 2025 arrives!
Which got pushed? I can only think of Mickey 17 and all Marvel films but Deadpool
It is because of covid. Movies are not making the money it used to. Point blank.
Lol
@@pb.j.1753 A lot of the big movies got pushed back because of the actors strike. Some to the end of 2024 and most of them to 2025!
Hollywood is risk adverse along with audiences. It’s a bad combo. Studios want to push sequels/remakes while audiences would rather spend their money on big original ideas. It’s why Barbenheimer happened. It’s just part of the Hollywood cycle imo, we were like this in the 70’s
I don't think the original good vs. sequel stale argument holds up. The main reason a sequel, or a remake, gets a good audience is the public already knows what to expect from seeing it before in theater or at home. Originals have to have some kind of hook, draw or awards buzz to get people to go, or make it an event like "Barbenheimer" unless they really spend the advertising dollar.
Streaming satisfies the “see it now” movement. I also believe that having these services cost and people are getting their money worth! Why go when I can sit at home, pause the movie if I need a break, eat food that does not cost as much as an evening dinner and not have people talk through the movie.
Abigail was such a fun movie to watch in the theatre. Makes me want to go more.

Remember when the music industry went digital? The reissue on cd etc, then the music files started showing up online, then downloads became a thing, now Hollywood has the same problem, when a file can be downloaded it changed the industry
The music industry never recovered. CD, Vinyl and digital sales are minuscule compared to the early 2000s when acts like *NSYNC sold 2.4 million in a week. A record they held for 15 years!!
Streamers like Spotify and Apple Music underpay all artists.
Matthew lillard has never stopped hanging with the scream crowd he always goes to events with neve and skeet

Moviegoing was already losing some of its momentum due to gaming and the advent of streaming content, but people still went as it's been a tradition largely uninterrupted for a century. The killing blow was Covid, which trained people to watch content at home, helped by studios like WB dumping their slates on HBO Max, and it's scared some people off of ever returning to theatres. This coincided with the decline in quality of Hollywoods biggest behemoth the MCU, and all of this has killed consistent moviegoing, seemingly for a whole generation. No Way Home and Barbenheimer were outliers, people now seem only interested in event movies, must-see cinema, they're not ready to go back to taking chances on lesser films. Hollywood was so close, 9 billion dollar films in 2019, who knew that was the beginning of the end.
There's some truth to that about the event movie. But before Covid they were saying that it's spending $100M+ on blockbusters that gets the audience, leaving little room for movies on more modest budgets.
I think advertising is failing to either give release dates to people who they already convinced to see their movie when it comes out, or let them know it's now playing in theaters.
What killing blow lol
Theaters were said to be dead since the VHS. Clowns everywhere
@@pb.j.1753 I seem to recall the industry not liking the VCR or VHS rentals when they first came out, but it allowed the masses to watch more movies than they would otherwise. Then they found they could make money on video sales.
It's hard to go to the theater when inflation is so high.
The change in technology has hurt Hollywood the most. It's not just streaming services like Netflix, but also platforms like UA-cam, TikTok, and video games. There is so much content out there now.
And when AI video generators like Sora AI become available to the public and easy to use, Hollywood will be in serious trouble. 😬
So much content and so little free time is what has happened. Without getting too off topic if the standard work week dropped to anywhere to 30 - 35 hours. I have a sneaking suspicion that a lot of industries that revolve around being what you do when you are not working would get a permanent boost.
Its not one thing its Covid, Streaming, Pirating, strike, and o yea PPL ARE BROKE!!!! lol.
and yet ppl's spending habits says differently
Prices too high. Not worth spending $50-$60 for a family of 2-3 at the theater
It's not politics, it's not quality, it's STREAMING. Streaming killed the Theatrical release.
I returned to movie going in early 2022 but got so frustrated when the first two movies I saw came out on streaming about a month later.
It can't be all those things? Lol for me it was quality. I am a film snob. There are many things I don't watch on streaming because they are crap. There are also great things on streaming I watch. I even go to the movie theater once or twice or maybe three times a year when something worth it comes out
Not politics?!!!! Ask Disney how streaming is doing for them. Not even Taylor Swift can help Disney+ which means it's Disney political agenda that is killing the company.
Yes but after streaming the subject of quality is an important discussion. Because moviegoers are deciding what’s worth seeing in theatres vs streaming
@@vinnym5607 But on home video it happens in less than 6 months.
I'm not sure what the problem with the alternate histoty Confederate show was. There are some great books doing that by Harry Turtledove, very successful Where the Condederacy win & brcomes a separate country.. Go all the way up to WWII (as in 1940s ) over 11 books.
There was mockumentary made back in the early 2000s about this called CSA. I'm surprised she didn't bring that up.
I went to watch Spider-Man to see Kristen Dunst, said no one
She ain't title character but she wants more money 😂😂
Sounds like that could-have-been-good movie, _Passengers (2016)._ J-Law says she made more than Chris Pratt while being in the movie for less time.
What are people in the industry talking about?! Almost this time last year Barbie & Oppenheimer was getting set to set the tone for the summer. Look at what works?!
Truly lol. They overthink it with their data and research instead of letting artists just make cool stuff
My thought lately, is that it takes time to course-correct. So if something new happened in 2023, then it will take awhile to see the results.
I was surprised to see low international numbers for _Civil War._ I read so many comments last week saying if you don't get it then it's probably because you're American, and this movie was made by a non-American for people who wouldn't care about accuracy in the American political scene. In other words, Hollywood makes movies that don't reflect other nation's cities or countries, "so what goes around comes around."
Now you know darn well with a movie called Godzilla x Kong nobody was going to see it for Dan Steven's in the first place. Grace, stop it!!
Not even for Milie Bobby Brown at her highest most powers powers.
I only ever heard of the existence of Abigail a week before release, they definitely did not invest much in advertisement. Hopefully word of mouth helps the total box office numbers.
I think the reality right now is that unless you’ve got a crazy hook, people are only interested in seeing blockbusters and horror films in cinemas now. The mid range film that’s dominating streaming seems like an unworthy cost. I go to the movies 1-2 times a month, and I try go for a movie made to be cinematic and in premium theaters.
Then why Poor Things and Oppenheimer made so much money?
Why did Green Book and Three Billboards and Everything Everywhere make so much money
„The reality“ lol
Great data you got there

WB really deserves its flowers. They so far have saved Hollywood! The inability of other studios to recover from the strike as fast as WB did is pulling them down as well. 🤷🏽♂️
I didn't even know Barrera was in Abigail until I saw a longer cut of the Abigail trailer. She wasn't even marketed as a draw. Definitely not on her.
Decades ago people designed their nights to watch shows from the Big 4 even if they were mediocre. Now competition is way too stiff for mediocrity. I have so many options.
During covid we bought a 4k projector and a 130ins screen and we won't go back to the multiplex.
The UK has had Hulu content on D+ for a few years now and is honestly one of the big reasons Disney+ is my staple streaming service and everything else I churn
I would really hate if Matthew lillard was in scream 7, it’s been over 20 years, he’s dead.
I think studios need to try putting pilot episodes in cinemas as well. I think think game of thrones type shows could be excellent at a slightly cheaper ticket price. Keep in cinemas for a month, release it on streaming
100% Covid ruined the movie going experience. It took away for about 3 years what was a lifetime of normality. I don't think people are as enthusiastic any longer since we have so many options outside of going to actual theaters.
The parallel to the MCU is that it was our Snap or Blip.
Melissa Barerra literally said genocide is bad and now the industry is offended by that comment?? Even when the International Court of Justice confirmed that Israels committing a genocide... make it make sense🤦♂️
There's too much content. I can't even keep up with all the streaming shows and movies and how fast things go to digital, so it's quite easy to just delay delay delay that movie theater visit until I realize oh, it's coming to digital next week so nevermind I'll just wait a little longer.
Also: originality and quality. If it's the 4th, 5th or beyond movie in the franchise, sorry but you've lost me and I don't care.
Civil War - I would love to see an Oscar nomination for Jesse Plemons. Hey, others have actually won for even shorter screen time!
I hope and believe there will be an Oscar nod for Dunst. This movie really respects the hell out of her as a senior actor.
Gave up on streaming and have gone back to physical media, theatre screenings and pirating 😀
As a woman I will say Kirsten Dunst's MaryJane Watson was the worst part about those Spider-Man movies and did nothing but bring those movies down, imho.
Many people agree. I am neutral to her
My boyfriend and I saw Spy x Family last night and really enjoyed it. We are big fans of the anime series and I’m very happy to see the movie in the top 5 this week.
i work in the industry, there’s a real lull when it comes to features and series being filmed. i can almost guarantee the lull is partly due to iaste contracts being renegotiated very soon. the studios don’t want to pick anything up
Certain directors seem to have the pull to command theater level budgets and VFX for streaming originals?
Steven Spielberg, Ridley Scott...James Gunn seems to have a lot of power at WB/MAX.
But I fear that a total shift to streaming would hurt sci-fi fantasy directors ability to fully implement their artistic vision. Hampered by network tv/cable level budgets and constraints.
Boy, steaming has been weak lately. The only thing I'm interested in is Dead Boy Detectives and JL Crisis on Infinite Earths.
It's a slow year, even slower than 2023. Mostly due to last year's strike. Even Netflix who usually has a lot of shows/movies at any given month seem to be pretty light this year.
But like Grace said, 2025 seems much more interesting and busy for everybody.
Oh and here's hoping DBD does well. Even if just because its in the same universe as the Sandman.
Hey Grace,
Don’t forget to post when your next BTT Inside Access livestream is going to happen this week on your community tab
Hollywood started the bleeding before the pandemic, when it pushed the high budget / special effect films over the smaller midrange film while in big cities, average ticket prices went up. At that point since home set ups weren’t as good, I only went if the picture was a big budget film the benefited from a big screen. But now with the improved home experience and writing getting worse it’s safer to watch films at home where I feel less bothered by seeing something with a weaker script such as rebel moon! I would have been very upset seeing that in theaters, but at home it didn’t hurt quite as much 😂
Hollywood is having trouble getting the world back to movies because most of the movies are bad. 1 out of 5 is good. I use to go to the movies weekly. Now it’s maybe once a month
Movies are made now for liberals. Conservatives know that and are not going to the movies.
Same for me! only I go maybe 2-3x a year
Grace it takes a very special movie to get me off my couch from in front of my 85 inch high definition television me personally I really think that they should redo all movie theaters. make it a must see experience to go to the movies and drop the price on the concessions that’s my personal opinion. I recently went to an IMAX theater where the seats didn’t recline all IMAX theaters should have the best of the best seating and high definition quality.
I got to see 'Abigail' last night at Alamo Drafthouse and it was pretty much sold out and was a nice atmosphere to see the movie. I feel like the movie snuck up on us suddenly so hopefully word of mouth will give it a good 2nd weekend.
Alan Ritchson was the draw for "Ungentlemanly Warfare". It was "Reacher" over "Witcher".
I think streaming really hurt Hollywood. Personally, I find myself only going out to theaters to see tent pole movies, now. Only occasionally going to see small but strong concept movies.
Saw Abigail at movie 🎥 theatre for $10 here in Raleigh NC.
Oh you lucky, lucky...
The problem is that a lot of the recent releases in theaters is not worth the trip or the expense. Streaming is a better option
I wanted to see some these movies but they for some reason don’t put on regular screens until the third forth week so i wait till then.
I think it's more than just covid "training" us to stream more. Remember that a lot of people took money they would otherwise have used for other forms of entertainment and spent it on home theater equipment and comfy furniture. And they probably signed up for more streaming services than they might have if not for the pandemic. So now they have a great cozy place to watch whatever they can stream.
I rarely go to the movies. I rarely have time to watch movies or shows. I looked this week to treat my fiancé and I and Abigail is the only one that seems to be Spanish subtitled in the area. Looking forward to it
If Hollywood wasn't so adamant about putting out bad content they wouldn't have to worry about people not showing up
So confused how talking about a genocide is “controversial.” Nothing offensive was said unless you have a guilty conscience and don’t like being confronted with the truth.
Shocked Abigail didn't make at least 15M
To me. Zendeya’s MJ is an elseworld interesting slant on MJ. Kirsten Dunst in the quintessential movie MJ
Grace!! Watch Baby Reindeer!!! Its incredible.
