I was a line worker for 35 years. From groundman to foreman. Free climbed the whole time or worked out of buckets. We worked 50 and 60 mph winds out of buckets on a day to day basis all winter long. Never missed a day working. Loved every minute of the work!

Years before these guys started their jobs we were using time domain reflectometers to locate faults in aircraft wiring bundles. One guy I worked with must have had some previous experience with buried cables--he always referred to the TDR as the "Dig Here Machine."
I worked telecommunications for 35 years, I’ve used an OTDR machine, used to locate faults in aerial or buried fiber optic cables, it could meter out miles, and put me within a foot of the damage, such a great piece of equipment to have!

agreed, when I started out building powerlines here in the US, we would free hand 110 foot poles, safety off at the top and do the work, I still refuse to use the (buck squeeze), may work well with distribution but try it on a 80 ft cedar pole thats been in the ground for 60 yrs,
What if you don’t answer the phone when they call? My brothers a lineman and the only time he doesn’t want to answer the phone he says is when he’s drunk lol. Have any of y’all ever been drunk when the phone calls?
If you can't not drink while you're on call you've got a problem. Also you don't want to stand up the guys you work with because a lot of times your life is in their hands. But besides that if you don't back your guys up you'll get run off the job. Seriously it's not rocket science, you just don't go drinking when you're on call or there's a big storm coming.

I encourage you to watch the story of the man who worked for AEP, he lost both his arms just going up to change a dust to dawn light. His bucket got hung on the phone line, he looked over lost his hard hat. When he stood back up the bucket came free and the bow in the boom, shot him up in to the primary. Funny story to tell you, We was doing a reconductor job and it was a lot of back yard. I ask a lady if I could bring my truck thru her yard, no no no your not bringing that thru here, I said miss I can put mats down it would be a lot easier and quicker if we could. No your not she said. So belt and hooks and stick work we go. Fast forward three weeks Hurricane Charlie blows thru South Florida, we are getting our job orders and the first one I get, guess what address it was. LMAO it was the lady who wouldn't let me in the yard. She was so hell bent on getting the power on and I ask if I could go thru her yard. She said do what you have to. I tore thru her yard like I was at a monster truck rally. Believe me karma is real.
Don’t trust the strap for any dielectric value at all. It’s not rated at all and the manufacturer doesn’t say it is. Always use a link if you’re going to attach to the pole. Cutting bells in line it will be fine.

I’m very interested and very serious in this job since this is dangerous. Inspired from my uncle who is a retired lineman.
