Every single person I have seen calls the 'I am that guy' line a few seconds before it happens and it doesn't matter at all because its still so incredibly satisfying. On the flip side no one calls the 'best friend in the whole world' line and the reaction from Amos is simultaneously uplifting and heartbreaking.
There are so many incredible scenes in this episode. Mao kneeling in front of Avasarala wearing his daughter's fight suit. Cotyar going out like a boss.
Strap in for the rest of this season!

It's not that it doesn't matter that everyone calls the "I am that guy"
It's exactly what makes the line amazing, and the character and the scene so well built, that everyone just understands that's what is supposed and is going to happen there.

Plenty of reactors adore the "best friend" line, even as a high point in an episode full of high points, especially if they've really connected to Amos. I will say that I've watched very few lone male reactors to this show, so my sample base is probably different.

The second line works because of the first line. Amos saves Prax from taking an action that is against his nature because they are close friends. And when Amos says "I am that guy" he is both the enforcer of justice and the protector of his friend.

absolutely. If you show that clip to 1000 people that have watched to that point, they're all going to know what line is coming up and it couldn't matter less. I can't really think of another line like that.

Fun story from the Ty & That Guy podcast: Ty wrote the "I am that guy" scene with Amos as he usually handles most of Amos's important dialogue. But there was more dialogue on the page when Amos talks Prax down and Wes convinced Ty he could convey everything they needed just by repeating "You're not that guy" and sure enough, it works great.

And this is where Amos cemented the nickname for himself of Murdersnuggles. And where Wes Chatham and Ty Frank got the name of their podcast from: Ty and That Guy.
I love that Bobbie had 2 callbacks in one scene: 2x6, where she sees the hybrid not wearing a vac suit over her, and 2x1, where she arm wrestles her own Goliath armor. I think it's possible, since the protomolecule talks to itself in real time, the Katoa became aware of the structure coming off of Venus. Which, by the way, the SCALE of that thing (for scale, Venus is just a tiny bit smaller than Earth).
Great work on hooking those people on the show. I get the same vibe from watching it again with you.
Favorite moments. If course the "Best friend in the world"/"I am that guy" scene. But also, Bobbie's revenge for her team, the final montage - music, editing, content, narrative, ending with the "what the fuck is that?" moment - but also, and this gets me in the feels every single time, Cotyar's farewell. What a G.

Yes - Amos is pushing Prax to go all out to save Mei (like he wished someone would have tried to save him) and giving Prax the tools to do it - but also (and it is very subtle) watching how Prax's resignation over how his daughter likely is gone is moving Prax to a very dark place that culminates in Prax almost committing murder (Strickland deserved to be killed but how it was done/more importantly who did it matters just as much).

The tragedy of Katoa is that part of him was still there, despite becoming a hybrid. This was confirmed by one of the writers on their podcast. He moves different from the other hybrids, different body language too. When Bobbie is waiting on the ladder, the Katoa hybrid peered around the corner like a little kid. When the Katoa hybrid finally has her, he doesn't kill her. Instead his attention is drawn to the horizon and then the sky. Its pretty heartrending when you realise its because Katoa, whose a Belter, has never been outside in his life. There's almost a look of wonder on the hybrid's face as it looks up at Io's sky.
So in a way Strickland was right, the genetic disease that the kids have did stifle the proto-molecule somewhat, if only to allow them to keep some of their minds, even as their bodies transformed. Its pretty cruel when you think about it.

@@funnylilgalreacts True, that’s where things between Earth and Mars have been leading them. At the same time, it assumes that there has to be a winner and a loser, instead of just… not. You’d think there’d be another solution. I mean, it’s probably how it would play out were it real life, sadly. Very human, and very frustrating. The thing about preemptive attacks is that you’ll never know if they were truly justifiable, because your reason for launching them literally hasn’t happened. A philosophical point in some cases but nevertheless.
Mars lost some first-strike capability, which, in this case, was only used defensively, as Earth struck first, and 2 million people died on Earth. Win? Loss?
At the same time, the world did make it through our actual cold war without lobbing thousands of nukes at each other. A lot of people still died in proxy wars and economic skullduggery, and, yes, there was a winner and a loser, but the world got off easier than many thought it would. The old, huge power in the end lost to the younger power built on pioneer spirit and military strength (yes, Earth is the USSR and Mars is the US), but without directly duking it out to everyone's detriment.
Chrisjen is very much the cold warrior type; aggressive and no doubt fine with proxy wars but intent on keeping the main conflict a cold war, not a hot one. Errinwright is more a MacArthur type; MacArthur wanted to drop dozens of nukes on China and invade during the Korean War because he saw that sooner or later, China would be too powerful, so better destroy them preemptively. He’d even gone behind Truman’s back to make it happen, which Truman learned of through incepted communications. Very similar story. MacArthur was fired instead, and you can argue that China has become too powerful - but at least nobody’s (yet) started WW3, so… better?

Also, is it weird that the one thing I would have liked to have gotten is a short moment right at the end between Chrisjen and Cotyar where she says "goodbye my boy" or something to that effect? The way it was portrayed in the show, it just feels like she loves him (almost) like a son. And once again, soooooo good to see that actor get to be a good guy - something he does quite well as it turns out 😄

When Prax introduces Amos to Mai as "my best friend in the whole world" I always get real misty. That whole scene from Mai running up and hugging Prax to Amos delivering the "I am that guy" line may just be one of my favourite sequences in the whole show.

This is possibly the best episode of the entire series. So many marvelous payoffs. Prax, Errinwright, Strickland, Bobbie v. Hybrid, and more. Even Cotyar's death was made important and believable. Chen's portrayal of Prax in this is too good. As a father of daughters, there are SERIOUS feels for me! His need to compartmentalize and even shut down some emotions is utterly believable. He has to see it through, but he knows a happy ending is far from certain. Katoa looks off when he senses the protomolecule thing taking off from Venus. Also, *I AM THAT GUY!* 🤯 (Which is where the title of Wes's podcast "Ty and that Guy" comes from.) The Venus entity is a HUGE part of the next season.

It wasn't done poorly or incorrectly, but it's more powerful in the book when Bobbie kills the hybrid because her armor is completely dead, she breaks her arm lifting the gun, the narration specifies that she empties 2,000 rounds into it's face at point blank.
It's more satisfying because the hybrids are much smarter than the ones portrayed in the show, (I'm not dissing the show), she figures out it has a pattern, as they circle around each other at a full sprint. It hurls a boulder after every few steps, so she jumps over it accordingly. It knows what she's doing and purposely throws to her left several times on purpose so she gets used to jumping in the same direction every time and then it rips out it's explosive implant and throws it to her right, in front of her, and the blast knocks out her power armor

This is such an Amos Moment. He sees himself as being a Monster. And he is not completely wrong. He would probably be diagnosed as a psychopath if someone would bother to do so. He does not think he has the capability of actually "be good". But he made the choice to do the next best think and act in service for someone who is. Putting the demon in service of the Angels. And he sees Prax as perhaps the best person he met yet. And he protects him from moral compromise.

You finally arrived at the most famous line in this show...."I Am That Guy"
Couldn't say anything before (hope nobody else did) but Wes Chatam has a UA-cam channel called "Ty and That Guy" The Ty part comes from Ty Frank. He is one of the two writers who created The Expanse. Together, the two of them do breakdowns of the show. It will be fun for you to watch after you finish the show.
Love your comparison of Amos to a pitbull 😆 Very apt. A pitbull can be quite sweet, but also ferocious.
BTW, your sudden urge for children sounds like you want Amos' children. 😂

While I loved that Strickland was dealt with and I love that Amos was the one that did it instead of Prax, the best moment was Prax saying that Amos was his best friend in the WHOLE world and the shocked look on Amos's face in that statement. Also the amount of trust Prax showed in Amos to tell Mei to go with him...And the very soft "Hi" Amos says to Mei. Simply the best.

"I am that Guy" was Amos stopping judging himself. That is the moment Amol truly understood his purpose in this universe. Prax trusting him with his child cemented it in. Amos did seem more comfortable in his skin after this.

Avasarala kept track of Cotyar's life and career like a mother would do about an estrange son. And despite his aversion to politician, Cotyar answer Avasarala call for help like her own son would. In a way Cotyar was Avasarala's son for a longer time than her real son.
BTW, I think in Amos' catagorization, he sees himself as one of the bad ones who follow the leaders like Holden or Naomi to protect those who need to be protected like Prax, Alex.

yeah.. loved this (and the episode!)
This is why Prax is one of my favourite characters. He's "just a side character", but damn does he have a huge effect on the main cast.He also saves his daughter which is total dad-goals for me :) (I'd hope to be like him in that situation). That scene of him putting Mei to bed, and getting a goodnight hug just gets me into tears when I remember all the crap they have been through.
I love this series for the characters - and how it is willing to just "sit" with the characters and lets us build rapport... I hope you are watching (or will watch) Andor because it is managing to do the same trick! Make the characters worthy of empathy.

yeah, the Amos-Prax dynamic is one of the best in the show. I didn't really like Amos at firs but I have massive respect for the man after S3. You see in these episodes he's starting to figure out who he really is. Him stopping to follow Naomi and having someone to basically tutor brings out the best in him, and you can really see him grow. And his growth is even that more powerful when you hear his occasional side comments.
An yeah, the "you're not that guy" moment was one of the best in the series.

I think Kotoa was looking up and away from Bobbie because he was reacting to whatever it was on Venus being ready to launch or nearing completion. Probably, that was when it happened, and when we were seeing it on the video feeds, that was after the delay for the images to reach Earth and then get broadcast to the solar system at large.

On how damn good The Expanse is, my favourite description is the one that sent me watching:
Here’s my stake in the ground: In 2020 we’ll look at the state of science fiction programming, and ask ourselves how we got into this golden age. Then we’ll look back and say “ah. The Expanse. It set a new bar, and for the last five years everybody has been racing to clear it.”
      - Howard Tayler, 2016
While his projection on the level of competition to The Expanse show was optimistic to say the least, I agree that it hits a new bar possibly only reached by one other: The Martian.

2 minutes and 30 minutes in, and I clicked Subscribe.
After two brutal weeks of watching people jump on the bandwagon of "this guy is not like US, is he not *insert any negative characteristic known*, hahaha", I broke down in tears during closing arguments and resigned myself to a life as mathematically improbable (all kinds of outlier scores for all kinds of measurable traits, very few of which are connected) when the group I had started to love thinking of as "my people" had no concept of compassion for those who test above average, especially if they previously scored even higher. Had I just been projecting empathy onto them?
Then I clicked on this video by a person I have never seen before, just because I love The Expanse so much, and the That Guy moment is one of the best EVER, and ran straight into a mensch!
