Encaustic Text- Painting with Wax over Spackle and Stamping into Encaustic Wax

I love adding text to my encaustic painting. Using drywall spackle on the wood base is a great encaustic technique that adds such depth and texture, especially when stamping into it first!! This painting with wax over stamped spackle is one of my favorite new art techniques in a long time. Stamping into encaustic wax in the layers above continues to add more depth. I love it so much! I’m going to have to get some spackle now! I use coconut oil rather than linseed. It works beautifully, with no worries about the oxidizing problem.

I like how this piece turned out. Very nice! Regarding waiting so long for the linseed oil to oxidize before proceeding….here’s what I’d do. (I simply don’t have the patience to wait for days for it to oxidize.) I clean as much as I can get off with clean rags. Then I do a very light fuse. The fuse encapsulates that remaining fine skim of linseed oil, removes the rag buff marks and restores the ‘waxy’ surface. That very small amount of oil in the wax should cause no problem to the integrity of the wax. (I’ve talked to Richard at R&F Encaustic about this. In fact they have a fact sheet about combining oil and wax on their website).

Great tip Linda, thanks! I struggle with my heavy hand and am always so paranoid I'm gonna fuse too much and ruin things. But you're right, it's worth it sometimes!!

Yep, this stamp is from creative embellishments. They sell mostly chipboard, but have a few awesome stamps.
