- Chirag Paswan is an Indian politician and the leader of the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) (LJP-R), a prominent political party in the state of Bihar. Born on October 31, 1982, in New Delhi, he is the son of the late Ram Vilas Paswan, a veteran politician and founder of the Lok Janshakti Party. Chirag Paswan has emerged as a significant political figure in Indian politics, particularly within Bihar.
Chirag Paswan completed his schooling at the Air Force Golden Jubilee Institute, New Delhi, and later graduated in engineering from Bundelkhand University. Initially, he pursued a career in acting, appearing in the Bollywood film "Miley Naa Miley Hum" in 2011. However, his political lineage and the call of public service soon drew him into politics.
In 2014, Chirag Paswan contested the Lok Sabha elections from the Jamui constituency in Bihar and won, marking his entry into Parliament. His victory was seen as a continuation of his father's legacy and demonstrated his appeal among the youth and rural electorate. Paswan's role within the LJP grew significantly as he took on more responsibilities, eventually becoming the party's national president in 2019.
Under his leadership, the LJP faced several challenges, particularly with the shifting dynamics of Bihar politics. In the 2020 Bihar Legislative Assembly elections, Chirag made a bold move by deciding to contest independently of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), of which LJP was a part. This decision was largely seen as a direct challenge to Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. Although the LJP did not perform as expected, Chirag's actions highlighted his willingness to take risks and his ambition to carve out a distinct political identity for his party.
Chirag Paswan's political journey has been marked by his efforts to modernize the party and appeal to a broader demographic. He has been vocal about issues such as employment, development, and social justice, aligning with the aspirations of the younger generation. Despite facing criticism and internal party strife, especially after the death of his father in 2020, Chirag has remained a resilient figure, striving to uphold his father's legacy while also forging his own path.
