Schubert and Richter : way greater match. Brendel's sound here is awful, his performance is stiff and lacks everything Richter had : musicality and poetry.
This is the perfect example of an anti-virtuoso piece. This dry, grey and introspective sonata was not composed to exhibit technical abilities but to express intimate feelings and deep thoughts.
Brendel's tone (bone hard and flesh soft), seriousness and phrasing are ideal for this grave sonata. Also slightly (and rightly) slower than most interpretations, allowing time for the beautiful moments to breathe, and more imaginative use of pedal, half-pedal and voicing.
Very nicely put --- you should review --- and AB is rhythmically stronger in the slowly rocking first movement than others (typical; he pays more attention to rhythmic strength than most pianists, who think a metronome limits their expressivity, or something, when the opposite is the case). Don't necessarily agree about slower, though, at least from listening to several this mid-day.
Schubert and Brendel : a perfect match! Nice association of images, too.
Thanks!
